I'm surprised the percentage is so low.  I'm certain more than half of Americans either attend church or consider themselves believers in some form of Christianity.

I'm sure you are right about that, but most don't believe it literally.  A good example, is Stella, (no disrespect intended).

I do take it pretty literally in general, but there are places where it is obviously not meant to be taken literally.  For instance, "if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out."  The intention is not really for people to gouge out there eyes!  Can you imagine?  Every man on earth and most of the women would have empty eyeball holes

Common sense.  This isn't a test.  There are parables, specific guidelines, figures of speech, warnings, recommendations, commands, etc.  You just have to read, use your best judgment, and listen to your conscience.

That’s not a surprising statistic; there are many unthinking people in the world.  Look how people flock to shows like Crossing Over and publications like the Weekly World News. 

Any serious student of the Bible knows that many biblical tales are specifically intended to be read as metaphors.
