Google memo writer faces tough legal road challenging firing

The Google software engineer fired for writing an internal memo critical of diversity hiring policies at the company faces an uphill battle legally challenging his termination, but he could succeed in prolonging the controversy, potentially driving the tech firm to settle, legal experts said on Tuesday.

James Damore told Reuters in an email on Monday that he had been fired by Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc, for “perpetuating gender stereotypes” in his 10-page memo, which asserted Google had “a left bias” hostile to conservative viewpoints and argued that the lack of representation of women in leadership roles in the tech industry was due to biological differences rather than discrimination.

Damore said in the email he was exploring his legal options. Neither Damore nor Mountain View, California-based Google responded to a request for comment for this article.

Damore’s memo and his firing have quickly become flashpoints in the culture wars with right-leaning writers and websites embracing Damore’s stand against “political correctness” and those on the left decrying his “sexist” arguments.

Just like virtually all North American universities.  I think Google spent something like $50 million in both 2013 and again in 2014 to more women into STEM.  How did that one work out for them?

Alphabet Inc.’s Google has fired an employee who wrote an internal memo blasting the web company’s diversity policies, creating a firestorm across Silicon Valley.

James Damore, the Google engineer who wrote the note, confirmed his dismissal in an email, saying that he had been fired for “perpetuating gender stereotypes.” He said he’s “currently exploring all possible legal remedies.”

The imbroglio at Google is the latest in a long string of incidents concerning gender bias and diversity in the tech enclave. Uber Technologies Inc. Chief Executive Officer Travis Kalanick lost his job in June amid scandals over sexual harassment, discrimination and an aggressive culture. Ellen Pao’s gender-discrimination lawsuit against Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers in 2015 also brought the issue to light, and more women are speaking up to say they’ve been sidelined in the male-dominated industry, especially in engineering roles.

Earlier on Monday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai sent a note to employees that said portions of the memo “violate our Code of Conduct and cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace.” But he didn’t say if the company was taking action against the employee. A Google representative, asked about the dismissal, referred to Pichai’s memo.

Damore’s 10-page memorandum accused Google of silencing conservative political opinions and argued that biological differences play a role in the shortage of women in tech and leadership positions. It circulated widely inside the company and became public over the weekend, causing a furor that amplified the pressure on Google executives to take a more definitive stand.

Apparently, this guy is  getting a lot of support from inside Google. A lot of people resent the idea that certain groups get a free pass for something that should be earned by merit.

The reality is that women just aren't as into science as men. That doesn't mean that a woman can't be a scientist or a programmer. It's just not going to be on a one to one ratio with men.

Don't confuse highly intelligent with highly educated.  Indians are no more intelligent than white people but they are disciplined in going to school and learning instead of posting on facebook and playing PS4.  The quality of work from these indians is horrible.

Hollywood is already dead they just haven't figured it out yet. Fuckhole actors and actresses still think they're a big deal. I can't remember the last time I went to a movie theater and can't see any circumstances under which I'll ever go to one again. I currently watch no scripted television or Netflix. Steve Jobs explains that the difference between the best  programmers and an average programmer is 50 to 1.  Anyone who's programmed and knows great programmers understands this.  For example, The founders of google were great programmers.  This is why affirmative action is so decisive in software development.  Your really need great programmers to develop software the level Google does.
