We're both amateurs.  Those questions are hard to answer.  I don't know if I will ever go pro, but I'm gonna make a run at it this year. 
I'd like to think that we're both pretty good BBs and we both have a "look" that's in a more favorable direction for FBB.  

No FBBs make great money competing as Pros.  Some are sponsored, and the ones who win the big pro shows make decent money, but most generate income from things other than competing.  Melissa probably makes the most money of them all.

Lenda was Ms. O back in the 1990s.  Iris Kyle is Ms. O right now.  I'm sure they're both doing well, but there really isn't great money to be made in competing, whether it be BB, figure, or fitness.  

The money is made by getting sponsorships and magazine deals...and running member-paying websites for those who may want to go that route.   Figure and fitness competitors have more opportunities with the mainstream stuff.  
Anyone who goes Pro (figure, fitness, BB) can charge more money for personal training, contest prep services, etc. just because they are Pros, and that usually can yield a good income.

Also, since your husband has a good job and has the bennys covered, have you ever considered doing PT full time and seeing how you could do? I'm not a big fan of female BBers. Some of them look OK in the offseason, but I personally don't like chicks that have veins in their arms and a hard 6 pack. I like my girls nice and soft, around 16% body fat - that's just my taste.

As to who I think looked good, I'd say in their off season Cory Everson, Denise Ruthowski & Sharon Bruneau to name 3 off the top of my head. DR was a bit big, but she had a nice face. Kim Chizevsky looked great after she stopped being huge and ripped for the Ms Olympia and turned to fitness. I prefer fitness chicks and the hottest one among them IMO was Monica Brant (back when she was at her prime).

The problem with fitness and figure is that after it's inception circa 1995, it soon became a venue for bunnies to make some quick money by doing 'bikini modeling', which means pics of them wearing thongs with their face down and ass up. The mags quickly pounced on it cause the content obviously helped with the sales, but there is no denying that suddenly every Jane, Susan and Audrey were now an 'athlete' simply because they had a 6 pack and were willing to show it off, on top of the rest of their assets. Not all of them of course, but a lot of the times, that's often the case

Most of the paysites have stuff like weekly pics and updates, training clips, chat rooms, webcam shows, and many (not all) do nudie pics and some of the soft core porn stuff.  At the very least, many do "implied nudity."
 
I've considered doing a website, but I don't know what I would offer paying members since I'm not interested in taking my clothes off, and I am not sure why anyone would pay me money for anything else.  

I might go the PT route in the future, and maybe a website of some sort, but who knows.  Right now, I am plenty busy with work...it's all I can do to keep up with GB.

I like fitness chicks better too. I agree with you about the abs, flat stomachs on women is nice, but abs are gross imo. One thing I never understood about women who compete(or even men for that matter) is the whole offseason thing. The women I know want to look their best at all times. Yet it seems like women who compete, whether it be figure or BBing, don't mind looking like shit for 10 months out of the year and good for 2. It's would seem that women who are serious about weight training would more vain than normal chicks, but in reality it's like they don't care how they look most of the year. Weird.
