Do any of you foam roll? Regularly?
:-\ so painful
-
its brutal.
not sure it even works or does anything beneficial.
hurts like a bitch.
-
Yes, I use it regularly for lower back and legs. I do a lot of olympic lifting (cleans and most variants of full deep squats) and the foam roll helps a lot to loosen up tight spots in the muscles.
Some info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foam_rolling

Coach's CrossFit.

My gym has only a soft one with a smooth surface. Would love to try a hard roller with a rough surface (no homo that is)

I have several in my home gym, culminating with my favorite: a 3 foot piece of 4" sch40 PVC pipe. It cost $4 down at Home Depot.
I also have a $60 one that I got from EliteFTS with knobs all over it (no homo). I rarely use it.
-
Oh brother gayer than rolling on 3 E's with no trousers on at Brighton Pier

Because it's way more painful? I assume it's great to loosen the shoulder blades?
Elite has great products, but shipping rates to Europe are ridiculous.

Just get some PVC pipe and lacrosse balls and you're g2g.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Isn't a PVC pipe too smooth for a good grip on the floor?
I've heard good things about lacrosse ball. I assume they're brutal.

Two tennis balls taped up together works pretty good.
-
Cross fitters aren't smart enough to foam roll.
Maybe some aren't but at least they all meet the height requirements for the rides at Disney
-

Cheap solution, but in this case you're limited to two directions, you can't make spins.

Yup. My sister, the PT, recommends the tennis balls. I've been good, so far.

Worth a try :)

Two best things you can have. The beastie bar you just grab that sucker like a rolling pin and work it away up and down the thighs or hamstrings. Awesome.
I once took a class for two months here when I was taking a break from weight training that incorporated a DDP Yoga style with foam rolling. That class was great!!! I wish that instructor had not moved (or at least they found a replacement). I would sign up for it again. Absolutely nothing easy about this class.

If you had to pick one, which would you choose. I'm guessing the roller and not the bar?

Anyone try "fascial planing" which Parrillo advocates. I did it on my stretched thighs on monday and they are bruised like crazy. Used the beastie roller menntioned above to massage the stretched muscle.
This is "planing"
I don't know if it does anything, just thought I'd try it
-
Foam roller and "The Stick" are very good tools for any athlete's tool box.
Marathon stick? I prefer that over a foam roller many times over. That's what I have. It makes it easier to target different areas and you can use it on arms.

When Franco Santoriello came over to compete in the uk in 89 he trained at our gym and told me about fascial planing,so i agreed to let him do it on my calves,he had me do a couple of sets of calve raises then he measured them ( he measured them before the workout) and then did the planing on 1 calf. The only reason he did 1 calf was because the pain was unbearable.I did 1 more set and the calf he planed was half inch bigger than the other.

It hurt like hell even as we added almost zero pressure. Major bruising. :D

not sure about this crap, used a foam roll to loosen up a tight back, pissed blood for a month had to see a doctor. hadn't rolled since. coincidence???? who knows?????
-
Waste of time. I have never had one injury, not stiffness, tightness, nothing.

Any chance you used a cactus by mistake?

I don`t think you are supposed to put your penis in it, but I could be wrong. People do a lot of homo things and I wouldn`t be surprised if "foam rolling" includes stimulating your genitals.
-
Waste of time. I have never had one injury, not stiffness, tightness, nothing.
That can happen if you dont try hard in the gym.
-
Foam rollers were too expensive for our teams for I bought 6"OD PVC pipe and cut them down to 12 and 18". Works great, inexpensive and they can carry them in their equipment or training bags and they never ware down.
-

You can`t lift more than me currently nor have you ever. What is your deadlift? Oh, its nonexistent because you are nothing but a box of broken parts. Bench? You probably don`t do that either. You probably do leg extensions and call it a day.
Seriously do you think you are or ever have been stronger than me?
-
Car buffer style, I'm a fan -

Also if you can find one on the cheap, the Thumper equine massager -
(http://www.thumpermassager.co.nz/images/Heidi-equine-neck-0450x0338.jpg).
That was the best messager I've ever used.

Well I have both, as both are used differently. The roller you can use on more areas, but the bar you can use with more comfort and do one leg at a time and use it on the biceps and triceps easily. Sometimes I just don't want to lay on the floor and instead sit on the couch watching tv massaging the legs down.
-
Probably gets some blood flowing to the area which can be a good thing.

Well, we all know you know everything.

I can and I'm probably 20 years older that you. In every lift.

I can do more pullups than you easily and more dips.

Could careless about dips. They tend to take a toll on shoulders. Make a video of your pull-ups and we'll find out.

would like to incorporate this into my routine for lower back stiffness, no homo. Opinions Coach / Chiroflex?

It's amazing for lower back and really, overall body.

My dads bigger than your dad.

The more you do it, the less painful it will become.

My dads bigger than your dad.
Can`t be. They both are dead. If you want to compare bones maybe, my dad was 6`4.

Some creative tools here, esp that Black & Decker, LOL
Sometimes I use a bathing brush, which works pretty flexible and effective. Scrubbing your back or hammies isn't a problem, as long as it has a long handle.

Words related to crossfit. Kettle bell, Olympic lift, twink and now foam rolling
-

You'll get use to it, works great !!
-
Probably gets some blood flowing to the area which can be a good thing.
And nothing more. Great way for trainers to waste the first 20 min of a session, convincing their client that rolling around on a piece of foam will magically balance their structure.
-
Do you think foam rolling is better than other stretching methods?
Foam rolling isn't stretching and goes hand in hand with stretching.
-
Words related to crossfit. Kettle bell, Olympic lift, twink and now foam rolling
Yes, because none of that was done before "CrossFit".
-
DEATH...but I love it

Wait I remember you talking about your mom having cancer at some point, so you did have a mom right?

Stick envy. I think yours is bigger than mine
-
My dads alive and well thanks.
Well my dads bones still have more mass than your dad.
-
what the fuck is the point of foam rolling????
what's the theory?
Cheap and effective massage

Cheap and effective massage
It's thinking like this is the reason why America has passed the Eastern block countries, Europe and the rest of the world in strength and athletic development.
