Yes, I use it regularly for lower back and legs. I do a lot of olympic lifting (cleans and most variants of full deep squats) and the foam roll helps a lot to loosen up tight spots in the muscles.

Some info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foam_rolling

I have several in my home gym, culminating with my favorite: a 3 foot piece of 4" sch40 PVC pipe. It cost $4 down at Home Depot.

I also have a $60 one that I got from EliteFTS with knobs all over it (no homo). I rarely use it.

Because it's way more painful? I assume it's great to loosen the shoulder blades?
Elite has great products, but shipping rates to Europe are ridiculous.

Isn't a PVC pipe too smooth for a good grip on the floor?

Cheap solution, but in this case you're limited to two directions, you can't make spins.

Two best things you can have.  The beastie bar you just grab that sucker like a rolling pin and work it away up and down the thighs or hamstrings.  Awesome.

I once took a class for two months here when I was taking a break from weight training that incorporated a DDP Yoga style with foam rolling.  That class was great!!!  I wish that instructor had not moved (or at least they found a replacement).  I would sign up for it again.  Absolutely nothing easy about this class.

Anyone try "fascial planing" which Parrillo advocates. I did it on my stretched thighs on monday and they are bruised like crazy. Used the beastie roller menntioned above to massage the stretched muscle.

This is "planing"

I don't know if it does anything, just thought I'd try it

Foam roller and "The Stick" are very good tools for any athlete's tool box.

Marathon stick? I prefer that over a foam roller many times over. That's what I have. It makes it easier to target different areas and you can use it on arms.

When Franco Santoriello came over to compete in the uk in 89 he trained at our gym and told me about fascial planing,so i agreed to let him do it on my calves,he had me do a couple of sets of calve raises then he measured them ( he measured them before the workout) and then did the planing on 1 calf. The only reason he did 1 calf was because the pain was unbearable.I did 1 more set and the calf he planed was half inch bigger than the other.

It hurt like hell even as we added almost zero pressure. Major bruising.  :D

I don`t think you are supposed to put your penis in it, but I could be wrong.  People do a lot of homo things and I wouldn`t be surprised if "foam rolling" includes stimulating your genitals.

Foam rollers were too expensive for our teams for I bought 6"OD PVC pipe and cut them down to 12 and 18". Works great, inexpensive and they can carry them in their equipment or training bags and they never ware down.

You can`t lift more than me currently nor have you ever.  What is your deadlift?  Oh, its nonexistent because you are nothing but a box of broken parts.  Bench?  You probably don`t do that either.  You probably do leg extensions and call it a day.

Seriously do you think you are or ever have been stronger than me?

Well I have both, as both are used differently.  The roller you can use on more areas, but the bar you can use with more comfort and do one leg at a time and use it on the biceps and triceps easily.  Sometimes I just don't want to lay on the floor and instead sit on the couch watching tv massaging the legs down.

Cheap and effective massage

It's thinking like this is the reason why America has passed the Eastern block countries, Europe and the rest of the world in strength and athletic development.
