This New York Times article on the failure of California’s high speed rail reminds me of the chapter “The Moratorium on Brains” from Ayn Rand’s 1957 novel Atlas Shrugged

This New York Times article on the failure of California’s high speed rail reminds me of the chapter “The Moratorium on Brains” from Ayn Rand’s 1957 novel Atlas Shrugged.

In that chapter from the fictional book, everyone on a passenger train died because the train was controlled by politics instead of common sense.

This new article from the New York Times explains how the real world train’s ridiculous, absurd, irrational route was chosen based on politics instead of on common sense.

The New York Times article states:

“… the design for the nation’s most ambitious infrastructure project was never based on the easiest or most direct route. Instead, the train’s path out of Los Angeles was diverted across a second mountain range to the rapidly growing suburbs of the Mojave Desert – a route whose most salient advantage appeared to be that it ran through the district of a powerful Los Angeles county supervisor.”

Wow. That’s just dumb.

The article then goes on to state many different reasons why the project is so far behind schedule, and so far over budget. These blunders are the result of decisions being made based on politics instead of on logic.

By comparison, look at the very successful high speed rail in other parts of the world, such as Japan and Western Europe. They designed and built their high speed rail systems based on logic and rational thinking, not politics.

You can read Rand’s entire novel for free at this link. The chapter that I mentioned begins on page 523.

Here’s the New York Times article:

https://web.archive.org/web/20221009102347/https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/09/us/california-high-speed-rail-politics.html

KEYWORDS: atlasshrugged; aynrand; ca

My go-to example for CA waste, fraud, and abuse is the Bay Bridge retrofit debacle.  Caltrans estimated the cost at $250 million, but it ended up at $6.5 billion.

Even if HSR existed, I’d have to spend several hours driving or taking at least two regular trains to get to the HSR station.

California Bites Bullet of $1.8M Per Day for Failed High-Speed Train
Newsmax ^ | October 9, 2022 | Eric Mack
Posted on 10/10/2022, 1:14:32 PM

California's pricey and now-failed bullet train costs about $1.8 million a day, but without a light at the end of the tunnel on how it can be completed as designed, experts told The New York Times.

The bullet train sought to connect Los Angeles and San Francisco, but the only thing it has brought is red tape and a bulging bottom line: from $33 billion when planned in 2008 to be finished in 2020 to an estimated $105 billion in February to $113 billion now to be finished in 2030, the Times reported.

"There is nothing but problems on the project," State Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon complained.

This is in LA:

https://www.lamag.com/citythinkblog/exclusive-recall-recount-lawsuit-aims-to-put-gascons-removal-on-ballot/

Recall DA Gascon Committee members say the Registrar’s office has created roadblocks to a timely inspection of all 195,783 invalidated recall signatures. From a partial review of thousands of the signatures tossed by the Registrar, they say 39% showed cause for “clear, obvious, and legitimate” signs of improper invalidation. If true, this would mean the threshold to overturn the outcome of the recall has been surpassed.

Committee members will argue that the Registrar’s office threw out thousands of signatures for reasons ranging from specious claims they were “non-matching,” despite showing “substantial similarities to the signatures on file” to incorrectly invalidating them as “‘not registered’ when, in fact, the person was a registered voter who could easily be identified in the voter database,” according to a preview of the lawsuit obtained exclusively by LAMag.

“The Registrar has placed arbitrary and capricious limitations on the review process that substantially limit review hours, workstations, number of reviewers, access to information necessary to determine the legitimacy of a signature invalidation, and more,” the statement reads.

Newsom signs bill banning spread of COVID-19 “misinformation” by licensed physicians
KUSI ^ | Staff

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – AB 2098, recently signed into law by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, qualifies spreading COVID-19 “misinformation” as unprofessional conduct and makes it punishable as such.

Attorneys say AB 2098 is unconstitutional and a violation of 1st Amendment.

The parameters for misinformation regarding the pandemic are widely debated, with studies continuing to contradict one another well into society’s recovery from the global crisis — especially in relation to vaccines.
The bill states: “Misinformation’ means false information that is contradicted by contemporary scientific consensus contrary to the standard of care.”

KUSI’s Paul Rudy was joined by Board-Certified Physician Dr. Jeff Barke to talk about how censorship and democracy are mutually exclusive…

High-Speed Rail [in California] Is a Progressive Fantasy
National Review ^ | October 11, 2022 | Rich Lowry
Posted on 10/24/2022, 2:17:08

California hasn’t created a railroad to the future but a warning to the rest of the country to avoid its delusion and folly.

California progressives tried to build a European-style high-speed rail network and alienated the French in the process.

A big New York Times piece on the rail project reports that the French, who wanted to work with California, decided the state was simply too dysfunctional and departed to help complete a high-speed line in Morocco instead.

The ongoing unraveling of California’s rail plan is an object lesson in how infrastructure as eschatology is a bad idea. If transportation is conceived as a way to save the planet and fulfill a deep-seated, quasi-religious fixation rather than as a means to move people around more efficiently, it is bound to fail. Throw on top California’s politicized decision-making and regulatory and legal obstacles to building, and it’s a formula for a boondoggle for the ages.

No matter how high California has estimated the cost of the project to be, it hasn’t been enough, even as almost nothing has been built. It started out at $33 billion in 2008. Now, it’s $113 billion, with no one knowing where the funding is going to come from.

Not that the California experience will diminish the progressive ardor for high-speed rail. As far as its enthusiasts are concerned, it is like socialism — never failed, just never truly tried.

President Barack Obama proposed an 8,600-mile high-speed rail system, and transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg wants the U.S. to be the “global leader” in high-speed rail. Progressives think of bullet trains like windmills on rails, a symbol of enlightenment and modernity, a way to free ourselves from the selfish, small-minded tyranny of the automobile and adopt a sleeker, greener, more virtuous future.

Then, the wheel meets the rail. In California, it might have sounded appealing to build a high-speed rail link between Los Angeles and San Francisco — if you abstracted the project from all the topographical and other difficulties. For political reasons, a less direct, less economical route between the cities was selected. And the decision was made to start building between the two megalopolises, in the Central Valley, creating the possibility that California may end up with a bullet train to and from nowhere.

Of course, we already have cheap, high-speed transport between population centers. It is called air travel.

As Randal O’Toole of the Cato Institute points out, planes cruise at roughly 500 miles per hour. The Amtrak Acela, on the other hand, has a top speed of 150 miles per hour. Yes, airplanes need infrastructure, but not expensive, complex new infrastructure all along their routes.

O’Toole notes that Japan’s high-speed trains seemed like the future in the 1960s, when air travel was more expensive than rail. Also, Japan’s high-speed trains had a ready-made customer base in the considerable proportion of the country’s population that already traveled by train.

In the U.S. today, in contrast, the average cost per mile of traveling by air is cheaper than traveling by rail, and a minuscule 0.1 percent of all passenger travel is via Amtrak.

If we built the Interstate Highway System, why can’t we build a comparable high-speed network? As O’Toole observes, the highway system basically paid for itself and accounts for a substantial 20 percent of the country’s passenger-miles and a roughly comparable proportion of freight ton-miles.

High-speed rail could never be a match. Even if you put aside the endemic cost overruns, the inevitable construction delays, and the considerable maintainable costs, it can only carry passengers, not freight.

While progressives swoon over high-speed rail as the shiny future, some other genuinely futuristic technology is likely to emerge. If the age of self-driving cars ever arrives, people will be able to experience a car more like a personal train, except unlimited by rails.

California hasn’t created a railroad to the future but a warning to the rest of the country to avoid its delusion and folly.

California businesses are leaving the state at double the rate of previous years
SF Gate ^ | November 3, 2022 | BynTessa McLean
Posted on 11/3/2022, 9:13:10

The rate of California businesses leaving the state more than doubled in 2021, leading a new analysis to posit that the state may be “risking its economic future.”

There were 153 companies that relocated headquarters in 2021, more than double the 75 that left in 2020 and more than triple the 46 that exited in 2018, according to a recent report from the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. The conservative think tank said economics was the primary cause of relocation, citing other states’ lower regulation, lower taxes, and lower cost of living.

Eleven Fortune 1000 companies were among those that exited California in the past three years. McKesson, the biggest U.S. drug distributor and number nine on Fortune’s list, left the state in 2018 for Texas. The Lone Star State is the most popular for relocations — Tesla, Oracle, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Charles Schwab all left for Texas in the past three years.

There were 125 migrations of company headquarters from Bay Area counties since 2018, and if businesses continue to flee, it could have ripple effects on the region’s economy beyond just loss of tax revenue and job opportunities. “Another consequence will be the negative impact on the housing market,” said Suparna Chakraborty, UCSF Professor of Economics.

“According to professionals in the business relocation industry, our head count may be too low by a factor of five,” the report reads. “Moreover, our calculation does not take into account California businesses that are retaining their headquarters in California but who are making large facility investments in other states, such as Apple and Wells Fargo, who are building large campuses in Texas, and Disney, who is doing the same in Florida.”

Report: California likely to have $25 billion budget deficit

California will likely have a $25 billion budget deficit next year, state officials announced Wednesday, ending a run of historic surpluses and acting as a warning to other states about a potential recession.

Democratic-controlled California taxes rich people more than other states, meaning most of its drop in revenue is because the uber-wealthy aren’t making as much money as they used to. That’s why California is often one of the first states to have budget problems when the economy starts to falter.…

Not surprising since so many people and businesses are fleeing this state at record rates due to the democrats policies.

I've never lived in Cal, and only visited there once, many years ago.
But, even Bill Maher complains about the crazy ballot initiatives and silly regulations there.

To me, the ideal is a center right , conservative fiscal policy with social tolerance for differences without overreach .

Ya know, I used to be a republican. Voted for every republican Pres candidate from 1980 to 1996 .
Yup, I never voted for Bill Clinton and even voted for Bob Dole in '96 . I voted for Romney / Ryan in 2012 .

My main problem with the current republicans are rude blowhards  like:
Majorie Taylor Green, Lauren Boebert,Matt Gatz  and Trump himself.

Passing legislation should be a careful compromise that's boring to watch but provides for a working solution .

Saying you'll only accept the results if you win , is disqualifying for my vote .

Not likely to go anywhere, just racial pandering - but - Newsom might be floating this to get some type of reparations at the national level.

California reparations proposal could mean $223K per person in payments for Black residents
Gov. Gavin Newsom has pushed the reparations program, which seeks to correct what California government calls 'housing wealth gap'

Gov. Gavin Newsom's Reparations Task Force received projections from a consulting panel that show California may need to pay over $200,000 per person to Black residents if the state wishes to make good on promises of reparations for past housing discrimination.

Newsom has aggressively pushed his plan to provide financial reparations to Black Californians whom he says must be financially compensated for decades of discrimination.

The California Reparations Task Force's five member economic consultant team reported that under the initiative, qualifying Black residents in the state could qualify for $223,200 per person.

San Fran's reparations committee proposes $5 million to each Black longtime resident, total debt forgiveness
Fox News ^ | 1/16/23 | Jessica Chasmar
Posted on 1/16/2023, 1:28:55 PM

San Francisco’s reparations committee has proposed paying each Black longtime resident $5 million and granting total debt forgiveness due to the decades of "systematic repression" faced by the local Black community.

The San Francisco African American Reparations Advisory Committee, which advises the city on developing a plan for reparations for Black residents, released its draft report last month to address reparations – not for slavery, since California was not technically a slave state, but "to address the public policies explicitly created to subjugate Black people in San Francisco by upholding and expanding the intent and legacy of chattel slavery."

"While neither San Francisco, nor California, formally adopted the institution of chattel slavery, the tenets of segregation, white supremacy and systematic repression and exclusion of Black people were codified through legal and extralegal actions, social codes, and judicial enforcement," the draft states.

The draft plan includes a long list of financial recommendations for Black San Francisco residents, including a one-time, lump sum payment of $5 million to each eligible individual.
