Music videos up to that time were just these lame filming of the bands playing and singing on stage. It was Michael Jackson that took it to a new level and made it into mini movies beginning with Beat It. And when Thriller came out it just blew everybody away. That part where they are being surrounded by the zombies and then Michael and the girl gets separated and when she turns around she sees that he is now one of them and the dance scene that follows -- I still get chills from that. That video, for it's time, was just unworldly -- just mind blowing. Nobody saw anything like it. And everybody was trying to copy that dance routine. I was never a dancer and never interested in being a good dancer but even me in my room by myself would play a copy of that video over and over like a little homo hoping to get it right and impress everybody.
I am about the same age of Michael Jackson and literally grew up with him. All the way from the Jackson Five days when I memorized ABC, Ben, I Want You Back.... When I heard about his death listening to the radio I was at Kualoa Beach Park sitting on my favorite bench right in front of the ocean looking at China Man's Hat just chilling. It's the type of news that at first you don't want to believe. How can such a larger than life figure that has been with you since practically your baby years be dead? It's a combination of disbelief, sadness, and even some anger. I didn't know the circumstances of his death so it wasn't anger at anybody. It was anger at just the way things are. The kind of world that we live in. That people have to die. You just want to look up at the sky and shake your fist. I just stood up on that goddamn park bench and looked up into the sky and shaked my goddamn fist. "This is not right. This isn't how it's suppose to be. Why did you have to make it this way?"
