Post by: CalvinH on March 22, 2011, 09:59:05 AM
Sox drop Beckett till the 4 spot in the rotation.

wonder who makes the Yanks,Colon or Garcia ???...Colon is pitching better and has his fastball into the low to mid 90's.

Yea it looks like the nats gave him a minor league deal.

Told ya.

The Yankees aren't going to take on another reclamation project.  They already have 4 of them competing for jobs in camp.

They will rely on their insane offense, bullpen, and just enough SP to get to the break in contention, then see what's available.

They already have 3, but Marte won't be ready until the ASB.

Left/righty doesn't matter so much to me.  Just get guys with high K rates....  They have Joba/Robertson/Soriano/Rivera.   On paper, probably the best in the game.

Hopefully, though, Soriano pitches like crazy this year, then opts out, and Cashman continues to try to pry Soria away from KC.  They were trying to grab him from the Mexican leagues, but KC beat them to it.   He would be insane to have on the team.

The Orioles have a shot to make some noise this season.

I like the additions of Derrick Lee at first base and Vlad Guerrero in the outfield. They also have developed some good young talent with their pitching staff, but it's still the team's achilles heel.

I like the offensive potential with a healthy Brian Roberts leading off with Markakis, Lee, Luke Scott at DH and Guerrero. The Orioles could take a shot at winnng 85 games+ this year if they stay relatively healthy. I'm on the bandwagon for at least the first few months of the season! Orioles fans are starving for a winner these days.

I like Matusz but I still think they get gobbled up in the East this year.  I'm still giving them last place.  Showalter will not let anyone quit, though.

East will be tough. IMO with all the moves Boston made they just got even with the NY lineup. If Beckett and Lackey rebound I think Boston wins the division. Tampa will still be good if they have some bullpen pieces.

What?  The Boston Herald has already declared them the Best. Team. EVAH.  It's a done deal.

I hear you though.  I'd still take NY lineup over Boston's, but the margin has shrunk.  Based on the opening day lineup a 7-8-9 of Cameron/Saltalamaccia/Scutaro is kind of weak compared to Posada/Granderson/Martin.  But I'm splitting hairs.

I hope you and b88 post a decent amount of baseball stuff this year.  Could be fun.

lol at least the bandwagon is full again. I think Martin is going to have a big year and Soriano is a very underrated addition. The West is going to be interesting. A lot of people are picking Oakland but Texas still looks good to me. Losing Lee hurts, but just as much good young pitching as Oakland but a lineup with much more pop and a top 5 closer.

I agree completely on the West.

To be truthful, I don't think any of the AL teams really compare to Boston/NY/Tampa.

Orioles 2-0 to start the season. Already won the opening series by taking the first two games against the Rays. Only 160 games to go. ;D

Pitching and defense, along with some good luck against injuries may carry the young Orioles to 3rd in the East this year.

Think they have a shot at 80 wins this year? As sad as that sounds, that would represent a major improvement. If the Orioles can play at least .500 baseball all season, it will bring the fans back to Camden Yards in droves.

I used to agree with that but Peter Angelos is finally learning to step back and let the baseball people he hired run the team. The first big indication to me that the Orioles were getting serious about winning was the re-signing of Nick Markakis. By signing Derrick Lee and Vlad Guerrero, you can clearly see the difference to the start of the season Markakis is having now that he has some protection in the batting order.

I think what you're seeing is just Markakis gravitating back to where he should be after a down year.  Lineup protection has been proven to be a myth.

To me, the concept of lineup protection is that it enables certain hitters in a batting order to receive better pitches to put in play. The dangerous teams out there possess the circular lineups, like the Yankees.

But if a quality hitter in the 3 spot doesn't have a dangerous clean-up hitter batting behind him, pitchers would be more liable to throw more junk. As a pitcher you wouldn't want to put a hitter on base with a walk, knowing that the cleanup hitter is batting next and poses a real threat to get 1 or 2 RBI's.(or knowing a dangerous #5 hitter is up next, too.)

Just my .2

No, I hear you, and that's the popular notion of it.  Better pitches means basically more fastballs, for the reasons you stated.

But there's been guys who actually look at every single pitch to see if it's true.  They also look at lineup construction to see if there's any outliers that result for batters when they have different players behind/in front of them.   After looking at these results, they see that there's not much difference.  Great players, like Adrian Gonzalez, will hit well with a shitty team like SD, or with better hitters around him like Youkilis.  At the end of the day they'll still get their numbers.  Could this make a difference in a few at bats?  Of course. But it normalizes over time and genuinely won't skew a player's stats significantly.

Markakis was a great hitter in 2008 and I think he had Aubrey Huff as his clean up.  He's a great hitter who's had two or so "off" years.  I think we're just going to see him gravitate back to the player he is, rather than giving Guerrero and company credit for it.

There's a lot of stuff out there that discusses this stuff.  If you're interested, here's an article that probably says it better than I could:

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/unfiltered/?p=1042

But you can probably find articles that argue the contrary.  To me, these guys have made sense most of the time.
Title: Re: Baseball is almost here.

decent article but I'm still not convinced that lineup protection is a myth.

As an opposing pitcher facing a #3 hitter, I'd feel more comfortable facing Luke Scott rather than A-Rod as the next hitter.

Of course.  But over the course of a full season it probably won't change the #3 hitter's stats by anything substantial.

That was a nice win, but Hughes needs to improve or it will catch up to us.

I've never seen a pitcher with more of a inability to put hitters away with an 0-2 count.

If Burnett can stay the course and Hughes get a little better, this team will contend throughout until they pick up another pitcher.  I understand the reasons why, but not going all in on Danny Haren when he was available really hurts.

Yes.  They had him doing long-toss to build up the arm and it seemed to work a bit.  Probably just a slow start.  I wish he would go back to the change up he used to throw instead of so many cutters (that don't cut).

Reds' Mike Leake arrested

Reds pitcher Mike Leake was charged with misdemeanor theft hours before Monday's game after being accused of removing security tags from six T-shirts at a Downtown store and leaving without paying for them, store security and police said.

Employees at Macy's called police after they said Leake removed the tags from six American Rag T-shirts, valued at $59.88, and left the store with them. The incident was captured by security cameras, police documents state.

Leake, 23, was arrested at the 505 Vine St. store at 2 p.m. and booked into the jail at 2:32 p.m. He was charged with theft, a misdemeanor carrying a maximum jail term of 180 days.

Leake was in the dugout in uniform at Great American Ball Park for the Reds' game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night.

"Today, Mike Leake was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of theft from the Macy's store downtown," the Reds said in a statement released during Monday's game. "Right now, he has been advised by his attorney to offer no further statements on this matter. This case will proceed in the justice system, where Mike's story will be told. Until that time, there will be nothing further from Mike on this episode until the court proceedings have concluded," the statement continued. "However, Mike wishes to apologize to his family, the fans, Mr. Castellini, Walt, Dusty, his teammates and the entire Reds organization for this distraction."

Reds CEO Bob Castellini, general manager Walt Jocketty and manager Dusty Baker would not publicly address Leake's arrest, the team said.

"At this time, we are advised to not publicly address this matter because of the pending legal proceedings," the Reds' statement said. "However, we do not condone behavior of the type alleged, which is wholly inconsistent with the principles of this organization and our community and is detrimental to the positive direction we seek to follow. When the legal process has been completed, we will handle this matter internally."
