Title: Niners
Post by: Dos Equis on September 11, 2007, 11:29:16 AM
I won't get to say this for the rest of the season, but I just want to point out that the Niners are undefeated, in first place, have the best record in the NFC, and the best record in the NFL.   :)

I hope they tank. Not because I dont like them, or you for thay matter beach. Because we have a extra first rounder from them  :) Honestly I hope they finish in the  11 - 20 spot. I dont want to have a top ten pick. To expensive for unproven NFL talent.

I stayed up till after 1 am to watch that game.

With the bet that OzmO and I made with Earl1972 right now, both Pitt and SF are tied.

As much as i hate the 49ers..I gotta admit i was impressed with Alex Smith's poise near the end of the game. Hell the Muthafugger even scrambled for a few yards when i thought for sure he was about to end up as a red spot on the field.

But yeah they are number 1 for now...We'll see how long Alex can remain in the good graces of the 49er fans before he gets all crazy and starts throwing the ball to everything but a 49er reciever. ;D

What was really impressive was the Niner secondary.  They held both those receivers, Fitzgerald and Bouldin to just about nothing.  Amazing what a good corner can do along with the other changes they made.

I'm concerned however, about the offensive game plan.  It seemed real conservative until the last drive.

Do you think that maybe they are holding Alex back?  Playing him to conservatively?

I think that is a mistake.  You need to let Alex let loose like they did in that last drive because win or lose he'll develop faster and in this league they need every win they can get.

Niner secondary did look very good.  The whole D looked good.  Faster than last year.  Willis is a stud.  That kid was all over the field.  I can't remember the last time we've had a sideline to sideline LB like him who also fills holes and hits people.

I agree the play calling was too conservative.  One of the few times he threw the ball down the field was late in the fourth when Darrell Jackson dropped a perfectly thrown ball.  Would have been a TD.

They should also move Smith around and let him run a little.  He has good mobility.

I'd also get Lelie in the game.  DJax and Jacobs dropped about three passes.

You got that first rounder back from the colts I think right? I like the niners. I hope you guys have a good season. Just not to good. Imo the best value in the first round is between 11 - 20

Thanks.  The past several years have been brutal.   :'(  Carmen Policy and Dwight Clark really ran the team into the ground.  York didn't help any either, although he did spend some money after we finally got some cap room.  I like the team's direction.

Re draft picks, I'm of the mind that higher picks are actually better value.  There are always busts, but you often get studs in the first 5 or 6 picks.  Mid-to-late first round picks have a lot of question marks.  For every Shawn Merriman there are probably 10 mid-to-late first round picks who don't play like first round picks . . . like most of the Niners first round picks the past 10 years:  JJ Stokes, Kwame Harris, Jim DRUNKenmiller, Mike Rumph, Rashaun Woods, Reggie McGrew, etc.

Man....I was jumping up and down cheering when Alex picked up that critical 1st down.

There was that pass to D-Jack that went right thru his hands..... >:( pissed me off.

Then, Battle catches the ball, and the defender strips/slaps the ball, just short of scoring......man, I thought for sure the Cards would come up with it...

They will be tested this coming Sunday.  They will play in a very hostile environment.  Hope Smith can handle the 3-4 and numerous blitz packages.  James Harrison will have two sacks.   ;D

But very concerned with the offensive playcalling, esspecially in the last 2 minutes.

But very concerned with the offensive playcalling, esspecially in the last 2 minutes.

According to Nolan on KNBR this morning he kept it on the ground because Smith had just fumbled and on the next series through the ball into the ground.   I think he figured his Smith was rattled and decided to play the safe route.

I'm very concern about Smith ATM.   he is approaching a crossroad in his career.

Also, Lei Lei, is virtually benched.  I wonder what he did to piss Nolan off.
Title: Re: Niners
Post by: TrapsMcLats on September 18, 2007, 01:00:39 PM
Nolan is doing exactly what he did in baltimore, letting the defense win games.  He obviously doesn't trust offenses NOT to fuck up.  Smith will be fine, he won't be manning, but he'll be a good qb when york demands nolan lets him play. Go niners!
Title: Re: Niners

Let me just say, that at SOME POINT, they have to let Smith prove himself. I don't expect him to be Brady or Manning, but at least be a competent qb.

This is his third year.....we need to figure out if this guy is really the "franchise".

I agree with you, because I'm starting to have some doubts.  After 3 years, Smith has to show poise under pressure and deliver.  As TrapMcLats said i woonder if Nolan is doing what he did in Baltimore, which ultimately i believe is a mistake.

I was impressed by the defense.  How aggressive they were, and the pursuit.  Of course, I love the 3-4.  Niners are a few years away from being a powerhouse, but..... Alex Smith is the second coming of Rex Grossman.  Both Bryant Young and Larry Allen are getting long in the tooth, and replacing them will become a challenge.  I like coach Nolan's style, and of course, they got a gift on the "incomplete" challenge call on the Davis fumble.  That would have been at least a six point turnaround.  Not that the Stillers needed it.   ;D

Not a fumble.  He had possession, two feet on the ground, knee hit (he is down at this point), then elbow hit and ball pops out.  Ground cannot cause a fumble.  Bad call IMO.

What's the point of Instant Replay, if they can't get shit right with HD, various angles, and slow-mo?

That was the point where everything fell apart for us (49ers). I'm not saying we would have beat them, they are a much better team, with lots of talent/experience. However, it was a game up until that point.

Just when you thought play calling couldn't get any worse.......

7 runs in the first 9 plays?

2 called runs on 3rd and long?

6 total first downs in the whole game?

Hell, i don't think even crappy teams in 1985 had only 6 first downs against the bears defense.

I wish no ill will on the niners. I would have liked to see them have a winning season. Banta Cain was traded there. I am glad he is getting some playing time.

Although that first round  pick NE has from the niners gets higher and higher the more the niners lose. If the pats go 13 and 3 then pick 1 - 10th overall I can just hear the whining now.

The penalty was very harsh. The Broncos lost a few third rounder's for cheating the salary cap during there sb runs. Same with the niners. The fact is this was not that big a deal and the media hype train drove the story.

The commish looked at all the info he requested and found no harm with any of it dating back to 2001. The pats where fined for a violation of league rules. People don't get that what they did was not illegal. Trying to steal or decode signs is perfectly legal. Having a video camera on the field to do it was not. The irony here is scouts use high speed cameras, binoculars and dictaphones to do the same exact thing. Thats perfectly legal tho ::) Its tomatoes / tomato's mang.   The pats payed the price. The Commish said the tape had no outcome on any games. It was stated by Belichick they taped signals for later use. After an investigation in which the commish found no harm no foul on 75 tapes dating back to 2001 I would think MAYBE thats what they where doing.

If there had been some kind of advantage caused by tapes during any previous games the commish would have punished them further like he said he would. Jimmy Johnson was just on the radio last week telling people how he taped signals 15 years ago.You know that the comish worked for the jets right? If he chated for Kraft maybe he made something out of nothing for the jets. Since he is friends with the owner of that team also.

People hate the patriots and this was just a tool for a smear campaign. Every week some tool cries the pats did this, the pats did that. Waa waa waaa waa.

Willis is playing at a pro-bowl level.  He's getting great direction from Singletery and you see Wilis all over the place in games.  The niner "d" is the onlly thing positive this year so far.  If it wasn't for the Offense turning over the ball so much we might have won another game.

I loved Ross in college. You made out better on that deal since you didn't give up half your draft to get em ( like the jets). I would say Ross was a tremendous pickup for you guys. To have a big time cb start and excel right off the bat is invaluable.

Asante played like crap in his first few games back. The pats d is rated second in the leauge as a whole. Asante has three picks on the season so far. He has been pretty good. He ain't worth no 8 million or whatever he wants.

I am very impressed with Randel Gay to be honest. Same thing with Eugene Wilson. Both guys had awesome season when they first turned pro then have had injury issues in years past. Both guys ( knock on wood) are healthy and playing great. Gay was a steal. Kind of small tho.

Gore finally gets some good runs and the coaching staff decides to try and throw the ball against the best pass rush in the NFL.

I'm beginning to think the coaches are on crack.

Sitting here watching my niners play absolutely inept offense once again.  THe play calling is just staggeringly bad.  Rolling smith out when they've got no passing game going, gore up the middle, gore up he middle, gore up the middle, gore up the middle, gore up hte middle, gore up the middle, gore up the middle, gore up the middle, gore up the middle, gore up the middle, gore up the middle, gore up the middle, gore up the middle, gore up the middle, gore up the middle...  Doesn't make any sense to me.  No play action, no use of the sidelines, no quick outs or over the middle... you know, the plays that created the niners dynasty.  We kno its pointless to run a screen, because the line is so shitty.  Smith is hurt again...  How about the niners try to chip away instead of constantly going for the kill??? its like watching a 9 year old playing super tecmo bowl... they always go for the endzone.

Fuck, trying not to meltdown...

As we saw on the last niners drive, when nolan lets smith play, he's really good and much more of a playmaker.  All the well constructed plays in the world arent going to do anything if it doesn't put smith in the position to excel.  Nolan needs to recognize this and let the man play football.  Too much coaching going on, let smith call the shots like manning, and see what happens.  Smith has a cannon and needs to be the playmaker, not the play facilitator.  i really dont understand what nolan is thinking... and regardless of what we saw on that last drive from smith... WHAT THE FUCK WAS HE DOING IN THE GAME!!!  he's been getting smashed all game long and was one or two big hits from getting knocked out for the year.  I like nolan, but he was acting like a prideful idiot by keeping smith in the game in the hopes of getting a TD.

I'm starting to think it's Nolan and his approach to the game.   He seems way too conservative on offense.   I realize I only have a fraction of the information, but still.

They usually play Seattle tough, but the Niner O is just putrid.  Doing a real disservice to the D, which is actually pretty good.  I suspect we will be giving NE a very high draft pick.   :'(
