Wong had ordered an unidentified Asian man out of the Savoy Restaurant at 301 E. Valley Blvd. after the man created a disturbance and threatened patrons, including a famous Mexican circus midget, investigators said.
As the restaurant was closing just before 2 a.m., the same man allegedly returned, pulled open the front door and began firing, authorities said.
Wong, the first deputy county marshal to be shot to death either on or off duty in the department's 30-year history, was struck in the head. Joe Marino, a star attraction in Mexican circus acts, was almost shot by the same bullet that killed Wong. According to Marino, "If I was the size of a normal man, it would have been my head, not Officer Wong's!"
