Posted about this last night after hearing about it on Phil Hernons FB page.tried looking at her page but only one i could find was one with same photos as these and owner of Anytime Fitness. Nothing was spoken about her passing yet ppl keep saying her entire page was filled with condolences.
Tried googling her name as that's usually fairly up to date and quick but still found nothing. Do we really know she passed for sure? Her last post said "17hrs" around 10pm last night.

When you get past the dehydration point of no return, drinking water won't do it....it takes too long to be effective. The only thing you can hope for is to get an iv bag.

Sadly, I think it depends which way you've gone with the diuretics. Someone cleverer than me can explain, but as I understand it, what you drink needs to either contain sodium or potassium to 're-balance' what you've screwed up (see Dioralyte). And because these electrolytes are used to stop/re-start the heart during surgery, adding the wrong one can just make matters worse :(

It would not have made a difference. Heart attack was likely caused y a buildup on potassium in the bloodstream...usually happens from using diuretics. The only thing that may have saved her would have been some calcium chloride or magnesium perhaps but honestly, but honestly people simply don't prepare for shit to go wrong.

Potassium is secreted through the urine (along with water and sodium) during diuretic use. Hence the reason patients with heart conditions are put on potassium-sparing diuretics.

I competed at shows...why wouldn't I know? However, I never used any diuretics until my last show at the 2009 NGA Night of Champtions although I used herbal concoction of Dandelion Root and Uva Ursi along with drinking strong black coffee, rather than that pharmaceutical shit.
To complete at the NPC National level, you have to use the pharms but for regional shows its not needed and you definitely can't use it for natural events. However, these pictures prove that natural diuretics work fairly well.

There's a 4 drug cocktail given to people in the hospital with critically high potassium levels. It's just a little more complicated than giving some calcium or magnesium. That's if her potassium was high, it could have been low. A lot of these morons competing are taking potassium sparing diuretics, then taking potassium with them because they don't know what diuretic they're taking. It's just sheer stupidity, and honestly I'm surprised this doesn't happen to more people.

This, with maybe the exception of bodybuilding..any other categories definitely not needed. I mean, I'm all for setting personal goals and achieving your dreams, but is attaining a procard especially when you're individual in your 40's really going to propel the quality of your life to another level? I can see maybe if theres tons of prize money and sponsorships immediately coming once you go from an amateur to pro, like in the NFL, NBA, MLB...one minute these guys are college students and the minute they get drafted there lives are immediately changed and are millionares overnight, but to take such drastic measures with so little to gain I don't see the risk vs reward here. Very sad stuff, especially for the family. RIP

from my own experience from being overweight as a kid i think it stems from self hate to a degree. especially those who take it to the extremes.
some people i think no matter how good they look it is never enough . i enjoy my training and getting lean , but i can
ever see myself spending 1000's a year on drugs just to be the biggest guy around not that i ever would be
there comes a point in your life when you just realize you will never be the biggest or the best out there, there are other just more genetically
gifted. but i do believe there are people out there that are really into bodybuilding who cant accept this and they keep trying and trying no matter
what to reach that pinnacle they will never reach

When we were all younger, we would all run to the store with big smiles on our faces and pick up the new Flex Magazine edition. We would run home, look up at our fathers and say, "Im going to be Mr. Olympia one day, dad." But, as we get older, we realize that we have too many genetic limitations. As such, we go down another path. However, deep inside of us, will always lurk that dream of being BIG!! It just lays dormant!!

When we were all younger, we would all run to the store with big smiles on our faces and pick up the new Flex Magazine edition. We would run home, look up at our fathers and say, "Im going to be Mr. Olympia one day, dad." But, as we get older, we realize that we have too many genetic limitations. As such, we go down another path. However, deep inside of us, will always lurk that dream of being BIG!! It just lays dormant!!
ha yes you go that right , my first gym was a powerhouse gym, and there were some serious lifters in there, i remember guys in there early 20's talking about getting up to 270 like dorian yates , and were willing to do whatever it took to get to that size.
i even knew a guy who was juiced to the gills , would try anything his skin would break out bad, he did gay4pay and did gay porn, just so he could buy his drugs to pursue his bodybuilding career !
i knew another guy who competed qualified for the nationals eat lived and breathed bodybuilding he decided to buy a gym, and he lost his ass and went into massive debt in the process.

I think it is EXTREMELY unethical. I believe that companies, even individually owned companies, have an ethical obligation to the consumer. Sure, buyer beware should always be heeded; nonetheless, we rely on these organizations because we should be able to entrust in them, the same way you trust a doctor. No difference. There definitely should be some level of transparency by the organization with a healthy dose of "buyer beware" by the customer.

u got a good point there croatch , the only pro i can think of that sort of talked about the fucked up shit they did before a show was matarazzo but this was well after he retired and had a ton of heart problems.

Never have I seen/schmoed a show where there is a person who tries to get rid of drugs in the contest. The organizers of the events, etc., supplement companies must laugh at many in the sport. Sacrificing their health to line their pockets.
Someone in their prime makes little sense to make a change, but as someone is close to retiring...say Coleman/Cutler, whomever...never comes out about how shot the IFBB is and how extreme drug use is overlooked.

I competed at shows...why wouldn't I know? However, I never used any diuretics until my last show at the 2009 NGA Night of Champtions although I used herbal concoction of Dandelion Root and Uva Ursi along with drinking strong black coffee, rather than that pharmaceutical shit.
To complete at the NPC National level, you have to use the pharms but for regional shows its not needed and you definitely can't use it for natural events. However, these pictures prove that natural diuretics work fairly well.

u got a good point there croatch , the only pro i can think of that sort of talked about the fucked up shit they did before a show was matarazzo but this was well after he retired and had a ton of heart problems.
Levrone said something in an interview with Bob Chic about not drinking water while taking diuretics and only taking some sauce backstage and how he looks back now and it was dangerous. Vic Martinz said on the same show Bodybuilders need to sell drugs to have enough money to compete :o ::)

People who have addictions. exercise and dieting are their supposed healthy addictions
People with eating disorders who can mask their eating disorders under bodybuilding
I've rarely met truly confident people that were obsessed with bodybuilding.

Yes, and that's the big danger of diuretics. Either way it messes with potassium which is essential to all of your cells to live. Too little or too much potassium and you're fucked. I do know that athletes should prepare for both scenarios and to have a contest prep coach that has a medical or EMT background rather than your local juiceman hovering around your gym.

I never had to use diuretics when I competed. The reason being is never used anything that made me hold water. Never over carbed, and dieted strictly right up to the end.

Hardly the case...this happenned well over a decade ago in the era of vikingpower, goatboy, Massive G, Mower, McFarland etc. I feel really bad for her family and I'm sorry she's passed away. However, what really upsets me is these bullshit twitter condolences and then afterwards stepping right over her corpse and continuing on with the competition weekend without any fucking retrospect whatsoever. The industry needs to get the priorities straight and stop this continued push for a physique that is simply not healthy in the short or long run.

I remember Duchaine's diuretic advice. 10mg of Lasix IV then checking blood pressure. If still in good range do another shot and so on. Once it was getting close to too low to stand and pose that was dry enough. :D Much safer than oral he thought because of the fast onset and degree of control.

Same with insulin. "Everyone" seems to think it's extremely dangerous, which it can be, but who died from it? Can't think of even one case, certainly no high profile case. Milos thinks a few guys were saved by insulin, for example Mustafa Mohammed (insulin is used to lower potassium). :D

I think 7-10 days prior can sometimes be good for various reasons though. You have time to adjust water levels etc.

Well, no one in their right mind goes to Mexico for surgery, & especially in the 80s. The surgeon was not hygienic & her calf got infected & was amputated.
You get what you pay for.
Dan was a genius & a pioneer, imo, & he is dearly missed.

Yes, it was kept quiet for a bit, but came out on M.F.W. almost two decades ago now. It used to be used a cudgel during flame wars back then (e.g. - Duchaine is so stupid he took his girlfriend to mexico for medical work). That book "Steroid Nation" by Assael actually has a good run down of some of it, that matches my remembrance of it -

I have no idea what she was taking but can guess it wasn't "healthy".
It's very sad she died but for some competitors, the competition is what they live for.
Most could have a normal, healthy, functional lifestyle but choose otherwise.
I never met Joana and can't say for sure how important the bodybuilding lifestyle was to her.
It appears she pushed the envelope too far and paid the ultimate price.
I sincerely wish her family , friends and loved ones some measure of peace dealing with this loss.
