Live updates: A rush to reopen caused the spike in new coronavirus infections, health expert argues

A spike this week in U.S. cases of the novel coronavirus was caused by a rush to reopen the nation’s economy without proper safety measures in place, Ashish Jha, director of the Harvard Global Health Institute, said Thursday on the “Today” show.

State health departments reported 38,115 new infections on Wednesday, the highest single-day caseload in the United States since the pandemic began. Texas, Florida and California reported the most cases, with more than 5,000 each.

While Vice President Pence urged senators to focus on “encouraging signs,” several governors and CEOs were instead responding to mounting indications of a deadly surge in cases across the South and West. Nevada and North Carolina ordered residents to wear masks in public, and Virginia moved to implement new workplace safety rules that would force companies to protect workers from infection. Disneyland, in California, delayed plans to reopen.

The issue is the ability of the health care system to care for those that are ill and not be overwhelmed and not to force "elective" surgeries to be put on hold, herd immunity is a valid point for sure but it's difficult to say when to open what. People are often non compliant and there in is a huge issue. No wearing of masks, no social distancing etc, covid needs to be taken more seriously by us all.

"covid needs to be taken more seriously by us all."  Really?  A 3 month shutdown for something that kills less than 1% isn't enough?  Should we shut everything down for the next year?  Masks are going to do very little and social distancing are fine in public although I doubt it has the effect they are claiming.

  • Dumb people think Trump is smart.
Does anyone here personally know anyone (under the age of 75) that has died from this?...

I don't.

Sadly I do.  Two.  Both were under 40 as well.  The radiologist tech from here was 38 and was in IVF therapy the last six months trying to get his wife pregnant, so you know there would have been a heads up of any underlying issues.

Oh bullshit. My daughter in law works in the local ER. Because of the hysterical Covid response elective surgeries as well as cancer treatments were put on hold for over two months. And where were all the Covid patients? Apparently at home because there weren't any in this city hospital (population 250K). Let's tally up the death count from those "other" diseases that were ignored. Meanwhile the hospital system has instituted layoffs  due to the lack of revenue from lack of patients.

Covid is no worse than the seasonal flu. I know - I had it. Nothing more than a mild cough and fatigue for a week. Any flu will knock out a person with pre-existing conditions  if they are severe enough. So will the common cold.

Or it could be that it affects people differently, like anything else in life.

Some people get a terrible hangover, others not.

But according to this genius, based on his own experience (and only that) Covid is nothing. And cannot be nothing. Because, well, it wasnt to him.

How many have died on the highways in the same period? Guess it's time to close all the roads, lol

Is this supposed to be a clever comment?

Live updates: Top U.S. health official estimates 10 undiagnosed coronavirus cases for each confirmed one

The number of Americans who have been infected with the novel coronavirus is likely 10 times higher than the number of cases reported, according to the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In a call with reporters Thursday, CDC Director Robert Redfield said, "Our best estimate right now is that for every case that’s reported, there actually are 10 other infections.”

Redfield estimated that 92 to 95 percent of the U.S. population is still susceptible to the virus. He also said that young people are driving the recent surge in cases in parts of the South and West, a point Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) echoed in tweets about the increase of cases in his state.

Three states (Alabama, Nevada and Missouri) have reported new single-day case highs, and seven (Arizona, California, Florida, Missouri, Mississippi, Nevada and South Carolina) reached seven-day rolling average highs. But it does not appear, according to data reported through 2:45 p.m. ET, that the U.S. total would eclipse Wednesday’s record high of 38,173 cases.

So, this would mean that it’s even less deadly than previously thought.

The 3 most populous states are breaking coronavirus records, leading to fears of 'apocalyptic' surges

(CNN) The three most populous states set records for new coronavirus cases daily and there are fears of "apocalyptic" surges in major Texas cities if the trend continues.

Coronavirus has killed at least 121,979 people and infected nearly 2.4 million nationwide, according to Johns Hopkins.

Florida and Texas announced Wednesday that they'd recorded more than 5,000 new Covid-19 cases the prior day, a new daily record. California reported more than 7,000 cases, obliterating a record hit a day earlier.

And yet, you are still here.

U.S. hits highest single day of new coronavirus cases with more than 45,500, breaking April record

The grim milestone reported Wednesday surpasses the peak hit in late April.

The U.S. saw a record number of new coronavirus cases in a single day, with 45,557 diagnoses reported Wednesday, according to a tally by NBC News.

Wednesday's cases top the previous highest daily count from April 26 — during the first peak of the pandemic in the U.S. — by more than 9,000 cases, according to NBC News' tracking data. The World Health Organization reported its single-day record on Sunday, with more than 183,000 new cases worldwide.

Health experts said Monday that the resurgence in cases in Southern and Western states can be traced to Memorial Day, when many officials began loosening lockdowns and reopening businesses.

The Northeast has reported significant decreases in cases as authorities have maintained policies about social distancing and wearing masks.

Visitors who travel from U.S. hot spots who arrive in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut will be asked to quarantine for two weeks, their governors announced Wednesday.

Unfortunately, as many states struggle to contain the virus after having prematurely loosened restrictions, hospitals are becoming overwhelmed by patients.

Live updates: U.S. sets another single-day record for coronavirus cases

Across the United States, almost 38,500 new coronavirus infections were reported by state health departments by Thursday evening — surpassing the previous single-day record of 38,115, which was set on Wednesday. Texas, Alabama, Missouri and Nevada reported daily highs. The death toll also spiked, to about 2,500, as New Jersey added 1,854 probable deaths to its overall tally.

Texas reported 5,996 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, beating Wednesday’s record of 5,551. The state’s rolling average of 4,581 was a record and 340 percent higher than the rolling average on Memorial Day. The 47 new deaths were the most since May 20, according to tracking by The Washington Post.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) raised alarms about the biggest jump in new cases in his state since April, emphasizing that more than increased testing is at play.
