Got some good quad development going on.  Keep up the good work.  What is your leg routine like?  How long have you been working out?

i'm 43 so training long time,,,
leg workouts vary but usually
squat smith machine close feet or normal position 2 warm up and 3 work sets reps vary wk to wk but usual 15 high end low reps to 8
leg press 3 sets 10/15 reps
walking lunges premade bar on back and walk 10/15 steps per leg.
leg extensions 10/15 reps set 3 sometimes 3 sets drop sets 10 reps then drop weight 10 more.
hamstrings..
stiff leg dead lift 3/4 sets 135,185,225,275 set 10 /12 reps
laydown leg curl or seated leg curl 3/4 sets 10/12 reps.
calves 2 times per wk...

43 and still working out is inspiring!   :)  That seems like a bunch of different exercises.  I bet you don't get bored.

I have always just done heavy ass leg press or squats till I am wiped.  Typically takes between 10-16 sets.  Then when I'm all wobbly I know I did good.   ha ha ha   ;D

Do you guys think some of the ability to bring out certain muscle groups is genetic?   ???  I am kind of thinking this is the case, or could it be more related to fat levels... not sure which or both?

well from training standpoint, you lift and overtime you see certain bodyparts grow ahead of others,,you can make adjustments or change program around to try to balance it,,when you diet or eat to gain, fat loss or maintain then as time progresses you start to see where your build needs more focus.

Lol I'm sure their future boyfriends will think twice before engaging in any inappropriate behavior.

Just curious if you have any joint issues?

I still fairly young but I have pain in my elbows, shoulders, lower back etc. nothing that keeps me from working out but I can see how another few years of moderate to heavy lifting could pretty much stop me from lifting when I get older.

Just recently (i.e. late last week) I finally came to the realization that I need to get off my fat ass and actually start doing something about getting back to training and losing weight. It's funny how strongly motivating negative events can be, but I digress.

Your pics are an inspiration nj. You're looking good.

No, MC will always hold that honor. Also, NJF exercises respectable restraint in NOT throwing up the obligatory "thumbs-up" pose in any of his pics, which is highly commendable! :)

I see Young men straining against weights and doing half reps and i think ...he Needs some help. Point them to the Decline bench press and they say no...flat press. Still ... ;D

As always, you are looking great. Can I be 46 again? Well not unless someone invents a reverse time machine. LOL! Never-the-less you are still a huge inspiration to those of us who want to be as fit as we can be regardless of how old we are. You remain my idol, (no homo).

good shape....and still not looking like 46.....(that´s the midsection of a 25 year old man ;)).

Bodybuilding/esp. "Natural Bodybuilding" is the best way to look and feel younger than the numbers in our passports.

the main reason for this fact is to be consistent (year after year) + determination,....if you like/love this sport everything else
will come (knowledge about training, nutrition, motivation,....)

i started my weightlifting training 36 year + 2 months ago... at the age of 16 1/2 years. Longest time of "no train" was about 3 weeks....(and only after a bigger surgery in hospital....).

keep pumping and stay motivated....hope we old Nattys can write with the same inspiration in 10 or even 20 years..... ;)

Charly/Germany (act. photos 2 days ago with 112,5 kg/248-249 lbs, height 190 cm, 6 "2,5" ?)

Do you ever wonder where the years went? One day you're twenty something and the next you find yourself pushing fifty. In my case it heading towards  eighty. I don't know about you, but I feel a lot younger and I credit it to a lifetime dedicated to being fit.

Any joint issues? What was your worst injury over your lifting career?

none now at all,,i squat 405 8-10 reps,hack 5 plates a side when i'm in zone,,leg workouts are crazy..lunges/heavy extensions/drops/

couple yrs ago i did have a very bad injury i worked my self out of no dr's,,i pinched a nerve in my upper back so severe it locked my l/s up so bad i could not even get a 25 lb dbell off my chest left side,,every week i would get stronger and go up 25/35/50 ect...took few months to get back to 80/85's again, same with shoulder press db,,bars and machines came back quicker but db's were long time,i did ice/heat/advils/..stretching,,but during the weakest point i just supersetted everything stayed on diet and got real lean ,,,now i'm good,,occassional shoulder bug /pain ,but rom is fine..

I pinched a nerve it felt in my trap back around April. I kept getting sensation in my arm on that side like when you hit your "funny bone". Anyway the next morning I wake up and my entire arm is numb. Took a week for the feeling to slowly come back, and the front of my bicep is still numb to this day.

STRETCHING 1ST WHICH I NEVER/EVER DO :P,,,I WARM UP AND GO RIGHT TO SETS USUALLY,LAYED ON INCLINE GUY I TRAIN WITH WE RAISED ARMS TO STRETCH BACK LIKE A PULLOVER AND I FELT A TWINGE,I WAS LIKE DAMN,WARMED UP DB PRESS DID 70'S 75'S GRABBED 80 LAYED DOWN AND WENT TO PRESS UP AND ARM DROPPED RIGHT DOWN LIKE LIMP RAG,FRONT DELT AREA EXCRUCIATING ,,3 WKS LATER I'M PRESSING AGAIN AND PRESSING SHOULDER MACHINE AT LEAST AGAIN BUT WAY LIGHT COMPARED TO THE NORM,I COULD NOT DO FR RAISES WITH 2.5 WEIGHT ON CABLE STACK I DID 25'S OTHER DAY..SO I'M GETTING THERE,BACK AND TRIS/TRAPS NO PAIN WHATSOVER DOING THEM...
Title: Re: me@47...

So you are saying you tweaked something while stretching, but didn't realize the severity until you tried to bench?

I don't do inclines my shoulders don't take to it well, although standard overhead isn't a problem. I only use dumbbells for chest, thankfully (or not) I'm not up to a high enough weight that it is untenable to get in/out of position on my own (<100lbs).

I do lots of heavy flyes, what are your thought on dumbbell flyes? I'm trying to stay in this for the long run like you, could care less about lifting monster poundage.

In my opinion, walking at a fast pace is just as beneficial as jogging when doing cardio. Walking is not hard on your body like jogging can be. I usually walk at about a 3.8 mile per hour. Occasionally, I've been able to get up to 4.0 speed without breaking into a jog. It's easy to be accurate about the pace when on a treadmill.

walking or power walking is very underrated. I do a hill programme or Interval at my physio on the crosser, next day a walk about 1 hour 20 mins. I also mix it up with running and cycle around a lot. I cycled to my physio yesterday did the crosstrainer hill programme and cycled back and my legs were well pumped up. I think you need to mix the intensity up each session.

I usually take pics same area..i always take pics 'no pump',my delts last few yrs have gotten much better after I chucked the old school heavy approach,i pump delts and do volume and it worked in getting a more fuller look, chest is opposite low reps for me work best and when i'm healed I do heavy flyes and dips work best for me chest wise.learning what works is a task in itself...

Good information. The guys at the gym with the biggest delts, work them out with very light resistance and lots of reps. There must be something to this. I've wonder if this is true with other muscles too. What do you think?

jay...lot of trial and error ,one day it clicked and once you string some workouts together and feel it you stick with it and keep at it.its the mindset 'old one'you need to get over...

for me..i been changing things up to see what results could change..

calves..was doing hi reps and burn 'pump',recently went lower reps 8-12 at the most heavy weight slow stretch tho ,,its working

chest...low reps 6-8 best pumps and fullness for me at least...I've done higher reps and supersets as well and gotten same result,,but in terms of a bigger chest look low reps/volume'sets'

tris...like higher reps and I do trisets and or supersets frequently...if I do low rep/heavy my elbows blow out after few workouts ,,so I will occasionally do some heavier low rep workouts jn between .

bis..these I mix heavy and lighter/hi rep,,i switch week to week.bi's seem to respond better to hi reps I think in the end...

back...I do a lot of volume and movements and heavy mostly 8-12 reps wise is best for me...

quads..lots sets heavy weights mostly 10 reps goal I do 8 on certain heavy sets leg presses/squats..there are times I superset as well or do hi reps 12/20 on leg presses for pumps.extensions/lunges are higher reps 12 and above but still heavyish weight..

hams,,same 8-10 reps max weight that can be done for those reps ..again I will superset as well which last few weeks I've done with legs ,,supersetting means nothing to me I can do same weight I do normally even with increased set time and tempo..

delts already mentioned earlier..

I'll take what you've had success with under consideration. One can't argue with success. I have to change stuff up because I bore easily and I don't want that to happen.

My elbow was sore enough this morning that I put Bengay cream on it. That seemed to take care of the problem.

sorta I guess ,depending on light and how lean as well,i always had that gap ,would have liked more closed and low even pec line,i have good outer and upper tie ins I guess that made chest look fuller in some poses 'like side chest',they look flatter on the most muscular but I hit delts hard over last few yrs to look good in that pose,,,no offense taken at all'

great points nether i keep a keen eye on changes i see or ways to train around or even to maximize any boredom or 'just getting by'i don't fall into those easy ,i try to stay motivated in either strenght or pushing by super or tri sets at times ,age means something of course but i still approach it as i'm still into the 'routine'hard training forget 'age'

here was my leg workout today

leg press started i warmed up few plates a side there was a 25 on each side there already so i started throwing 45's over them my work sets were 5 plates and 25 per side,6 plates and 25 per side,7 and then i added a 25 on ;last set so total 16 plates were on the sled ,i repped 12/10/10/10/8

i then close foot squatted 225/275/315/315 12/10/10/10 ,,on a heavy day i hit 405x8

extensions sets 12 always 205/220/235/250

i will lunge usually as well ,,nit this workout

great points nether i keep a keen eye on changes i see or ways to train around or even to maximize any boredom or 'just getting by'i don't fall into those easy ,i try to stay motivated in either strenght or pushing by super or tri sets at times ,age means something of course but i still approach it as i'm still into the 'routine'hard training forget 'age'

here was my leg workout today

leg press started i warmed up few plates a side there was a 25 on each side there already so i started throwing 45's over them my work sets were 5 plates and 25 per side,6 plates and 25 per side,7 and then i added a 25 on ;last set so total 16 plates were on the sled ,i repped 12/10/10/10/8

i then close foot squatted 225/275/315/315 12/10/10/10 ,,on a heavy day i hit 405x8

extensions sets 12 always 205/220/235/250

i will lunge usually as well ,,nit this workout

Being realistic about the limits of one's genetic possibilities isn't settling in my book. If someone was 5' 5'' as an adult, it would be unrealistic to believe they could grow to be 6' 2".  The important thing is to be the best you can be whatever your genetic predisposition.

And you are right. People who think this way, limit their possibilities. It was kind of an epiphany for me once I came to terms with the fact that no matter how much I wanted it, I was never going to be really big, no matter how smart and hard I worked out and no matter how much I ate. This wake up call took me most of my adult life. Once I decided to work with what I had, my workouts became more consistent and productive.

my shoulder for those who followed last oct through now has healed nicely,i'm back to just about full strenght on press movements or close and along this few months have changed some things with rom and different lockouts that i have slacked on,i feel like i gotten more in tuned again with my bodyparts instead of trying to out muscle the muscle so to speak.i came off last summer into early fall lighter than usual i was a very lean 175 but felt small which is normal in 'clothes 'i felt great tho but again those who remember i had a health scare from mid august through october and still had followup in jan which everything worked out thank god, then the shoulder hit too so i wanted to bulk up a bit stay tight but a little filled out than last few yrs ,the injury came so even though i trained lighter on certain things i still was able to train pretty hard and i was eating more as well.i also for the 1st time 'ever'started treadmill light sessions 2-3 times week and still doing it,i feel cardio helps as well with the total process, nothing crazy or long just get blood going,i was very much anti cardio due to thinking what waste of time and 'muscle'lol,,said fuk it and i like it tbh...my weight is 190 lbs at the moment and considered to climb to 200 but i think at that weight i will look too bloated at 5'7 i was always anti perma bulker,,i think lean works for me.....took this pic 2 day no pump like most of my pics..

Definitely still looks tight condition wise. Considering what you went through over the last 6-8 months, maintaining size everywhere and staying in shape would be a miracle to most

Maybe a minor setback but at least you didn't regress

I am both ways,,i have pics from other cameras and lighting and u can see chest/delts I have a lot of vascularity ,where I take pics now doesn't show..im very happy right now current shape/condition for summer i'm bigger than last summer due to my prostate issue behind me I was down 10 or so lbs last year I was really ripped tho  ;D...my arms are bigger 'bicep'wise I worked a bit more there this year around shoulder injury,,my delts and chest are full as well again ...I play with my diet and tempo training/cardio that's all someone hormpne free could do...I also take arginine/agmatine more in summer it increases hard look and vascularity tenfold..

Yes, tennis ball is good.  I've used that method before.

Here is another thing.  Once you start using one of these, you will never want to do without.  They fix problems and keep them from coming back.

How long does this 'pump' last? I would think you'd have to re-pump every so often to maintain that look.

Isn't coming back after even a short break great? I know I find it inspiring. Careful though, it is easy to overdo it because you're so excited to be back at the weights. Of course the band and push-up exercises probably kept you 'tuned' up.

Your tan looks good even if it isn't as dark in the photo as it really is. My tan is all 'fake & bake' so far. I need to hit the beach (on the river) a few times to really get it going. You're gloss looks stage ready as does your physique.

I started back working out at the gym last Wednesday. Even though I kept up with upper and lower body movements, mostly weight free while taking my break, I am a little bit sore. I think I will take tonight off and work my quads tomorrow at the gym.

I tried a fast tan on my shin and ankle Sunday morning. I spilled hot bacon grease on it. Not fond of the resulting color which is somewhat purple except where the big blisters are. Doctor says I'll live. -Not going to be doing any leg extensions for awhile though. Oddly, there is no pain today.

The ocean is a great healer. Maybe I should take a trip to Seaside.

I actually was able to work quads last night, including leg extensions, which I did on a machine that has a bunch of adjustments, allowing me to avoid contact with the burn.

Looking great as usual. 190 lbs. with a lot of this weight in your quads.

I ate like crazy and ended up 2 pounds lighter the next day. I'm below my goal. Maybe it's time to add an extra healthy snack or two.

At least you can get the "right ones". In my case, none of my selfies look good....could it be that what I see in the mirror is total fantasy? LOL.

Those undies hit the dust pile awhile back. LOL. I'm aware that I am in superior condition as compared to most folks my age. Being in great health makes this easy. As for being critical, you've got me. I am my own worst critic, despite the shit I get on Getbig.  ;)

i try to stay as lean as i can in 'winter'months but recently have been try to put some weight/water not so much a 'bulk'total smooth out but more good food but a bit more that could vary more fats/more carbs, protein is always same in each meal and or snack/filler 'post workout.in recent years bodyweight #'s have taken a step aside more consistent conditioned look 'abs all year and nice decent bf levels not levels that would be stage worthy but under or close to 10 pct..i feel good at 185/190lbs ,sharp like 2 summers ago 175,,,right now 190 ,,200 would be nice but if i look sloppy i would not stick there long if i even got there..

my eating day ,,,pretty much the norm..weekends i miss a few meals.snacks

7am egg beater omlette/either some shredded chees or turkey 'sliced'mixed in..cofee

at work 730 to 830 1 packet flax oatmeal 'organic kind taste awesome just hot water nothing else added

10-1030 greek yogurt 12 gr protein and add 25 grs whey mixed right in like a pudding/banana

1pm usually hi protein grain bread with turkey or chicken breat'grilled w basmati or brown rice single cup brand just micro,,then a fruit and usually granola bars both in package'nature valley'i use all flavors there good 'they have a lot of crap /carbs but i like em..

3 or 4 i might have a fruit at work or oatmeal again

630 dinner chicken/steak/burger whatever wife makes/always salad/veggie

730 5 grams creatine/arginine both powdered form,,i don't use creatine all year or sometimes not at all 'like yrs'right now using again i feel bigger on it'lol'

8-30 train 1;20 to 1.5 hrs training

after training usually cereal 'cheerios/chex/life with scoop protein powder 'i use water no milk'to mix/eat/fruit/i sometimes eat some junk carbs grain crackers/peanut butter sometimes like a small gorge fest carbs..not every post workout but some days i eat more,,

i use pbutter/olive oil fats
low fat icecream or gelato for treats again not every day tho depends on time year if leaning out more i do less.

i still have pretty good metabolism for my age

cardio very light 2x per week after training

my routine

mon chest/tri/abs/treadmill'depends'

tues off

wed back,traps/abs/calves

thurs delts/bis/treadmill usually

fri off

sat usually legs top to bottom if not...i work every other sat

sun legs

on weeks i work sat i will do pump day at home just move around movement to movement all around 'i have pretty good setup at home to get by days i can't get to gym,,

there ya go...

Who cares if you have Shawn Ray's once upon a time muscularity. He doesn't look that good now and you do. You rock! (just because....no homo). It is good that you are varying your poses. There is more going on and this proves it. Get a dark spray tan and you'll look better than he ever did. LOL!

I read your diet routine. It's amazing. I can't imagine eating that often. The best I've ever managed is 5 meals or snacks a day. You are giving your digestive system a workout everyday. My guess is that following this plan maximizes your metabolism. Do you agree?

i guess ,,sometimesi eat more loose and look better fuller and just as lean,,i always keep the abs ,i drink a good amount water and always protein'not excessive'per day ,at this point its just conditioning thats going to make difference ,gaining too much bodyweight in quest of more size is moot anyway i am at size i'm at and thats that, but thanks for keeping up in my threads really appreciated...

Do you mind me asking how many calories you consume on an average day (if you track them)?

Do you mind me asking how many calories you consume on an average day (if you track them)?
I’m pretty instinctive and I gauge roughly it’s not obsessive other than foods I eat ,I have added some body weight just to see how far before I lose some leanness I guess after trying since 1987 not much will change unless I give up.

Meal 1 egg whites I use pour out version with peppers every day and I add shredded mozzarella cheese then oatmeal flax version cup blue berries and sometimes I add cereal protein go lean

Snack pistachios lately before lunch. I usually have a granola bar too and piece fruit or grapes for example

Meal 2 chicken usually cup rice

Protein bar few hrs later

Meal 3 dinner before gym chicken and rice again usually

Train hr later I train at night 730 or 8 pm

Then after training shake I use the organic pea protein better on my stomach measure large scoop overflow it and add blueberries frozen and or frozen strawberries and banana and add natural peanut butter sometimes

After that I sometimes eat some organicflax chips from Trader Joe’s with salsa not good to eat before bed but I’m used to it

Depends week or day we get bagels at work sometimes I grab a whole wheat and put pb butter.

I take multi and glucosamine and arginine tabs before good pump it gives

I eat red meat once week usually in place of other chicken meal

I take it, you allow for variables? I couldn't eat the same thing each day with the exception of one red meat day. Tonight, I will make Spanish rice using a package mix, lean ground beef, onion, mild green chili peppers, a can of chopped, fire roasted tomatoes, some water or beef stock and maybe sliced black olives. This makes plenty for two big or three modest sized meals.

So, which competition are you thinking about entering? I'm being serious. Contests are being postponed until summer and fall because of COVID-19. This gives you time to put the finishing touches on your physique.

You really know how to critique your work. Isn't that often a sign of success? What did you think you looked like? Chopped liver? Your limbs, arms and legs are among of your strong points.

I got to meet Zane when he allowed me to come by his home many years ago to pick up some autographed books for my older brother.  Of course I didn't go inside their home, but all the same it was great to meet him and get the books for my brother.

Mr. Zane is a gentleman, believe me and that you and my brother both think the same of him and have similar physiques is just so cool!  I think he still has the poster of Frank and Christine from the late 70s at his home.  I did not have the pleasure of meeting his wife but she was and I have no doubts remains, beautiful.

Train hard, brother!

Your progress posts are inspirational as usual. -Legs look fine. If you are like me, working legs at home is a challenge as compared to working them at the gym where there is an array of equipment. I refuse to cave in to the theory that our leg muscles atrophy as we age. On the other hand, muscle-wise both of my legs together would make one of yours. LOL! You've got great skin tone. I'm guessing you've been careful about sun damage. I have always had a fair number of moles, add this to age spots which show up as a lack of pigment and the fact that I have large pores and I am hairy, my skin looks like crap.

I wish I could say training has been great here too, but that would be a lie. Truth be told, it has been hit and miss.

THANK YOU....yeah i have been lucky its basically cause i was born thin but could develope a decent muscular build and i followed pretty much same eating plan other when i did a few shows ,i never bulked up fat ever ,i vary only in weight by 5-10 lbs ,i am currently 185 or so lbs...5'7 to 5'8 lol...depending ;D

What you say goes to prove there is a lot more to looking super fit than can be measured in weight and height. I'm about 5'10" these days and somewhere between 175 and 180 lbs. You're physique is god-like compared to mine. My main excuses are that I am 24 years older than you and bad about training consistency. One thing we have in common is that we both started out lean. Aside from when I was 29 and intentionally bulked up to 225 lbs. for about a minute, my weight is fairly constant like yours is

It is good to know all is well with your heart. It was probably just stress like you said. Stress be gone. It is a bad thing. Very hard on one's health.

Honestly over all the years you have been posting up photos, you look as good as did in your first photo post back in 2011. Here's some reminders of you in the past, including when you were just barely an adult (27).

According to the caption, you were 27 in these photos. Clearly, those were the days my friend... those were the days.

Here you are 48 years old and you have a really pasty face, but the rest of what is showing is killer. LOL!

So birthday coming up 55 next Thursday, July 13. As you can see my training is still in effect. Age catches up. I can feel it right now having some right shoulder issue working around it I have to do massages and I have different ways to work around it it’s affecting my chest workouts. I’ve had to do more cable and more machine, pressing on the angles and try to keep the front dealt out. started this thread over 10 years ago some changes in the body by time occur. It sucks. I hate it but it is what it is other than that happy to be healthy and still I’ll get big.com and hopefully put up a few more pics the next couple weeks or so. My leg workouts are going incredible. My legs really haven’t missed much of a beat  still there good size some separation as you can see.
