Title: I'd like to say sorry to getbig
Post by: Fatpanda on March 30, 2009, 04:44:09 AM
Over the past few years i have owned many a getbigger, some great some not so great.

I have attacked most who disagree with anything i say, and been ruthless in my anger.

I now realise i am so far in peoples heads, it is upsetting them on a personal level.

However i would like to say i am aware of this, and will try from this moment on to be nicer to everyone.

I believe in Karma, and although i try to be nice always - i have failed too many times.

So this is my official apology, sorry for any offence caused.

I would like to extend my help and advices to anyone who needs or asks.

Take care

so you are experiencing regret and confusion

probably followed by remorse and penitence

look it's just growing up, evolving, you'll be back at your old ways again, from time to time, but with a higher understanding

and karma is all in your head, part of your belief system. superstition of one form of another is part genetic.

some profound words there rami, i appreciate your input.

I disagree with the karma thoughts though, as i believe there must be some purpose for us, some reason to exist beyond the rat race.

mara offered buddha the rule of the world during his enlightenment, yet he refused.

hitler and atilla were great motivators and powerful spiritual beings - just imagine the good they could have done if they had not chosen war. I also wonder if they could have reached enlightenment if they were not corrupted by power.

"enlightment" as an achievement is just an illusion. you are already fully enlighted right now in this moment, you just fail to see it.

If you can get in the mind of atleast 1 obese persons head and convince them to lose the weight or off themselves then it will all have been worth it and your karma restored. We all know god hates fat people, that's why he makes them so ugly with a total lack of willpower to do anything about it.

Fatpanda also looking large and in charge as usual in his 56" blazer!  It's only hard to see a v-taper in that pic since suit-jackets flare out that way when raising one's arms, otherwise FP is a a lean mean pussy wrecking machine, and probably best of all has a great, embracing attitude with no hate.

Over the past few years i have owned many a getbigger, some great some not so great.

I have attacked most who disagree with anything i say, and been ruthless in my anger.
I have told many that they look like shit, when they looked like shit, despite never posting a pic of myself.

Take care

DK

(thanks to fatpanda, seriously i was thinking about a similar thread from yesterday on. I got a little freaked that so many guys here seem to take a lot of stuff happening on getbig very personal, and from all the online flaming and shittalking apart, i don't really want people to be upset in real life and i also don't want people to be angry with some online account, and putting all that is said on getbig to the real person behind that.)
There is nothing like quitting cocain... ;D

thanks for your input big_sti, i feel your pain and i'm sorry for any offence caused.

also while you are typing perhaps you could post a pic of yourself, this is not to own you or anything, as i'm sure you look great weather you are a tiny tit or a muscle bear, but because it would be the correct thing to do. You do not need to hide behind a gimmick account.

i respect you.

whatever you decide i wish you well, as a gimmick you are quite funny, but you should get the credit on your main account.

his mentor was a guy called bob peoples, i have his book also ( not read it properly either yet ). he deadlifted 700lbs i believe, from what i read his strength training was so simple too. It was from bob that paul used the partials at much heavier weights - the book static strength uses this technique, as does many powerlifting teams.

if i get some time, i wil scan some pics from the books for you and getbig  8)

whats type or routine did he use?
like an example of a routine

he believes in starting an exercise with 1 or 2 reps then sticking with the weight untill you get 5-6 only then would he increase the weight. i can't remember how many sets, ( i'm in the process of moving, and have boxed up all my books, so i can't check just now)

he also believed in extremely heavy partials, so for deadlift he would work in the top 2 inches of the movement, then slowly over the next few workouts increase the range by a few inches each time untill he could lift the weight full range for reps. He invented the power rack to help him with this. his book actually has the scematics for the rack he made  8)  ( as you can see from the pics above , paul anderson used these partials too).

i really believe that they were drug free, so when you think about the weight they moved its mind blowing.

can you explain to me why we are here? what is the meaning of life?

Even if there is a meaning of life, it doesn't matter because we will never know it during this existence, any way. You might think you can be told the meaning of life, but no one would trust an explanation 100% anyway. So best thing is just forget the "meaning of life", it's a waste of time.

But instead a logical way of looking at it is we are just a step of the matter/energy that forms this planet is becoming conscious. We are made of the matter that makes up this planet. On a bigger scale the matter and energy of the universe slowly becoming conscious. But the reason (if there is one) is certainly not for us to know in this state, we are just another small step in how matter behaves and slowly evolve.

So I think the best is to get over your self as being anything different, special or better than anyone else, and realize everyone is in the same boat. Life ain't always perceived as easy or happy, this goes for everyone. Should be enough to want treat everyone with respect. Not because any superstition judging you, or think that you have something to gain from it, but know people don't really need extra shit and negativity in their life, it's enough what life comes with for everyone anyway.

Does doing that make you feel all noble and virtuous on the inside to the point where you are just feeling smug from your magnanimity? No, I'm not saying be an arrogant prick and think you are smarter than everyone else, but if you are smart or better than most people in something, why not be honest, acknowledge it and pride yourself on being what / who you are?

And regardless of what you say, people are different, even though they have a lot of things in common physically, mentally, socially and in other contexts. The last thing I want to do is feel like I'm part of the mob and not have an identity that is indistinguishable from the next guy - don't see what's so saintly about such a state of mind.

a few have discovered the meaning of life  :) moses, buddha, jesus, mohammed, and many others. Their message is the same...............love each other.

are you claiming they are wrong? it doesn't matter?

that was my point, that is what everyone thinks - that we will never know, so so instead of looking for answers and meaning we just go on buying the latest mobile phone and watching sports on our latest plasma 62" tv.

all the while chasing money to fullfill the empty hole inside us, that can never and will never be filed with such shallow items.

in all honesty i bet the only time you can truly say you have been 100% happy/satisfied was when you have been head over heels in love with someone. To me this is what we should be striving for, as even if we don't get there we will make everyone happier in the meantime.  :)

I fully understand what you are saying! That is certainly a valid question, really has to be asked. It's a personal choice. The point of being proud I just don't get. Or feeling special or above others for that matter. I suppose it's just up too what satisfy you in life. Can't answer it better than that. You are right, it's just my personal feeling on the subject. If you want to be proud, feel special or whatever, why not, knock your self out while it lasts!

I'm pulling in the oars of this tiny boat,
growing weary of the rowing
and all the effort to reach some shore,
when it's not shore where I'm going

Rising with the tide, breaking with the wave,
I surrender every notion
that there is someone here to save
as if I'm separate from the ocean

Looking back, sometimes I have to laugh
What a lot of work it's been,
clinging to a sinking raft,
just to keep from falling in

So drown me in your darkest pain,
your softest kiss, your sweet despair
I've seen your face now and I know your name
And I can find you anywhere

OK if that is the meaning of life, why is there so much other possibilities?

Why didn't universe just evolve in to consciousness in ever lasting frozen rapture of feeling this "love". Hey maybe that's where it is going?  :) Pretty useless if it doesn't really work.

It's not so much a case of getting satisfaction from feeling proud for the sake of feeling proud. I'm talking about the natural state of mind at the end of some kind of accomplishment that you set out to achieve. Like for example, starting out as a stringbean who is unable to lift 225 lbs off the ground and few years later, deadlifting 500 lbs thanks to hard work, effort and persistence based on a game plan spanning years (in my case, naturally too). Then contrast yourself with other guys who go to the same gym and look the same year after year after year, due to several factors, with lack of hard work and dedication being the main ones.

Or think about making a million dollars from a business that you started from scratch, when you were at rock bottom and making it grow based solely on your game plan and sheer hard work / effort. And then contrast that with people who work the same job endlessly and hating it as well as the world and everything around them cause they fail to realize that they too play a part in their life being the way it is, and a big role at that. Again, I am aware of the fact that there are people out there who accomplish more of the same of what you have, just like someone who doesn't achieve what you did failed to do so not solely due to a fault that was all theirs - I'm just saying that if you do something worthwhile, there is nothing wrong with being happy and proud of it, as long as you don't act like a dick or assume an attitude because of it.

Just don't get the blanket "No matter who you are or what you do, realize you are no better than anyone else just because you too breath and eat and sleep like everyone else" philosophy that a lot of people seem to preach in a condescending tone. Yes, we all eat and sleep and breath like each other, but some people invent new technology while others perform heroic deeds in some way or capacity, just like some people rape and murder while others do things that are worse. So no, I don't think we are all equal and that a person who invents a cure for a disease should feel no better than another who bashes an elderly lady's skull in, so he can rob her of her money ;D

So we started to look for the meaning of life?

Here is a good start: The Heart Sutra

  Thus have I once heard:

The Blessed One was staying in Rajagrha at Vulture Peak along with a great community of monks and great community of bodhisattvas, and at that time, the Blessed One fully entered the meditative concentration on the varieties of phenomena called the Appearance of the Profound. At that very time as well, holy Avalokitsevara, the bodhisattva, the great being, beheld the practice itself of the profound perfection of wisdom, and he even saw the five aggregates as empty of inherent nature. Thereupon, through the Buddha's inspiration, the venerable Sariputra spoke to holy Avalokitsevara, the bodhisattva, the great being, and said, "Any noble son who wishes to engage in the practice of the profound perfection of wisdom should train in what way?"

When this had been said, holy Avalokitsevara, the bodhisattva, the great being, spoke to venerable Sariputra and said, "Sariputra, any noble sons or daughters who wish to practice the perfection of wisdom should see this way: they should see insightfully, correctly, and repeatedly that even the five aggregates are empty of inherent nature. Form is empty, emptiness is form, Emptiness is not other than form, form is also not other than emptiness. Likewise, sensation, discrimination, conditioning, and awareness are empty. In this way, Sariputra, all things are emptiness; they are without defining characteristics; they are not born, they do not cease, they are not defiled, they are not undefiled. They have no increase, they have no decrease.

"Therefore, Sariputra, in emptiness there is no form, no sensation, no discrimination, no conditioning, and no awareness. There is no eye, no ear, no nose, no tongue, no body, no mind. There is no form, no sound, no smell, no taste, no texture, no phenomenon. There is no eye-element and so on up to no mind-element and also up to no element of mental awareness. There is no ignorance and no elimination of ignorance and so on up to no aging and death and no elimination of aging and death. Likewise, there is no suffering, origin, cessation, or path; there is no wisdom, no attainment, and even no non-attainment.

Here is a good start: The Heart Sutra etc etc

Ah yes, The Buddha - the enlightened one who spoke volumes on the virtue of self-restraint and the power of the mind, all while weighing around 600 lb.

If it wasn't for his name, DK, you'd say his lack of will power was sickening :D

And then contrast that with people who work the same job endlessly and hating it as well as the world and everything around them cause they fail to realize they too play a part in their life being the way it is, and a big role at that.

Do I need to say I agree?  :)

And also one should feel good about something you work hard to achieve, it's on the level how the brain is hardwired from evolution. And yes, perhaps even special in a scientific sense, in some cases.  :)

As opposed to:

Hotei. Male. The god of contentment and happiness, Hotei has a cheerful face and a big belly. He is supposedly based on an actual person, and is widely recognized outside of Japan. He carries a large cloth bag over his back, one that never empties, for he uses it to feed the poor and needy. Indeed, the Japanese spelling of "Ho Tei" literally means "cloth bag." He also holds a Chinese fan called an oogi (said to be a "wish giving" fan -- in the distant past, this type of fan was used by the aristocracy to indicate to vassals that their requests would be granted). Hotei is most likely based on the itinerant 10th-century Chinese Buddhist monk and hermit Budaishi (d. 917), who is said to be an incarnation of Miroku Bodhisattva (Maitreya in Sanskrit).

Also realizing the simple fact that you live now and "Living" is in fact "continously dying", without a chance to bring anything back or to be here forever.

"Therefore, Sariputra, since the bodhisattvas have no obtainments, they abide relying on the perfection of wisdom. Having no defilements in their minds, they have no fear, and passing completely beyond error, they reach nirvana. Likewise, all the Buddhas abiding in the three times clearly and completely awaken to unexcelled, authentic, and complete awakening in dependence upon the perfection of wisdom.

"Therefore, one should know that the mantra of the perfection of wisdom - the mantra of great knowledge, the precious mantra, the unexcelled mantra, the mantra equal to the unequalled, the mantra that quells all suffering - is true because it is not deceptive. The mantra of the perfection of wisdom is proclaimed:

tadyatha - gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha!

Sariputra, a bodhisattva, a great being, should train in the profound perfection of wisdom in that way."

Thereupon, the Blessed One arose for that meditative concentration, and he commended holy Avalokitsevara, the bodhisattva, the great being. "Excellent!" he said. "Excellent! Excellent! Noble child, it is just so. Noble child, it is just so. One should practice the profound perfection of wisdom in the manner that you have revealed - the Tathagatas rejoice!" This is what the Blessed One said.

Thereupon, the venerable Sariputra, the holy Avalokitsevara, the bodhisattva, the great being, and that entire assembly along with the world of gods, humans, asuras, and gandharvas, all rejoiced and highly praised what the Blessed One had said.

Personally I can't imagine what it must be like to have everything in your mind tainted by a religion or superstition.

Why have your mind and thought process guided or plagued and infested by a Buddha, Christianity, Allah or whatever. Why close your mind. Why not seek answers for yourself, why blindly gobble up and accept what is drilled in to you. Think for your self instead.

yes, i'm afraid you are revealing your ignorance of buddhism rami.

Buddha's teaching was exactly what you said - "Why close your mind, seek answers for yourself, why blindly gobble up and accept what is drilled in to you. Think for your self instead."

when asked why people should believe him he said " don't believe a word i say or a word anyone says no matter what - always seek the truth "

i think you will like what you find in buddhism if you read about it.  :)

thanks for your input big_sti, i feel your pain and i'm sorry for any offence caused.

also while you are typing perhaps you could post a pic of yourself, this is not to own you or anything, as i'm sure you look great weather you are a tiny tit or a muscle bear, but because it would be the correct thing to do. You do not need to hide behind a gimmick account.

i respect you.

whatever you decide i wish you well, as a gimmick you are quite funny, but you should get the credit on your main account.

My pics are on here fatty.

because this guy Buddha basically "invented" 'live your fucking life', so it was named after him.

It's like Vince Basile invented Bodybuilding, so in fact bodybuilding should be called "Basilism", but it is bodybuilding.

I agree in the sense that there are just as many buddhist bigots as there are biggots in any other religion (resp. spiritual tradition). Someone who calls himself a "Buddhist" is on the wrong path anyway. The point is to realize that we already are Buddha.

Ok, I must admit I haven't read the whole thread here.... but just to make it easy for ourselves maybe you can answer this question:

Does any of the philosophies you believe in require any sort of supernatural intervention or creation?

If the answer is no then I guess we have no quarrel, but sometimes it sounds like you attribute your "philosophies" way too much power suggesting otherwise. But if they're only an interpretation of the world in order to create a certain state of mind, then fine.

I'm a bit edgy about Kyomu, that's all.

The 3 gods you mentioned, are they real in any way and do they have any supernatural powers? Or are they simply metaphors?

What I'm getting at is that as you claim to any of these gods have any sort of power or exists, you have A LOT of explaining to do. But that may not be the case, I'll leave it up for you to give a statement on.

buddhism has no 'supernatural' or stuff like that in it's pure meaning. There is also no creation in Buddhism, as everything exists out of cause and effect, hardly supernatural, no?

You have really strong prejudice about God. God always dont have to be like individual like humanbeing.

If somebody call a equation like E=mc2 a god because of this equation rules the movement of the particle, its a god for him.

So Indian called the natural phenomenon like Gods.Thats it. Plain simple.

So fine, you don't think any of these "gods" exists, they're just a way of explaining nature.

Do you know what a metaphor really is? It is a description of something in form of a sort of analogy or comparison, it is in no way, shape or form a substitute for any "god".

You believe in a metaphoric God. Christians believe in a supernatural intervening God. Do you see the difference?

In Budism, even the natural phenomenon we see is suspicious since the hard problem of conciousness(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_problem_of_consciousness).

Sorry I guess I'm with Buddha then. But it doesn't look like I needed the "concept" if I reached some of the same conclusions on my own.

But why is the truth depicted as a fat or anorectic looking man if "it" supposedly is non existant?

I don't mean to offend anyone's beliefs.

Still dont understand.
In Budism, even the natural phenomenon we see is suspicious since the hard problem of conciousness(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_problem_of_consciousness).

In budism, they dont believe in anything. Just keep on suspecting.

Now you're just playing with words. They don't believe in anything? They sure do seem to believe in being suspicious.

Ok, buddhism doesn't have any sort of gods.

Here's the best thing:

Buddhism has gods. And it hasn't. In Buddhism, there have been discussions through the centuries wether gods could attain buddhahood or not. So they think that gods exist.

But it is absolutely not important for you and me.

Now you're just playing with words. They don't believe in anything? They sure do seem to believe in being suspicious.

No, it's not playing with words.

Ok this is what ticks me off a bit. If buddhism has a nice and clear message to improve/get to know yourself, why does it need all that extra superstitious junk in the trunk?

You seem to benefit from buddhism without believing in a bunch of crap, if you don't mind could you in short explain how buddhism has helped you and in what way?

Haha. Yes. Spot on.
That Shakyamuni himself said that symbolizing him with making statue doesnt make people realizing the absolute truth. ;D

Alwyas People want to believe in something. ;D

Original budism was philopsphy, but it separated and became various kinds of religions called budism.

I see your point but if you wanna take it as far as buddhism what is the point? If you never accept any type of information or knowledge where will it take you? No where.
To claim buddhism gives you insight or makes you more knowledgeable seems like bullshit, honestly.

Again, as I've said before: who has made the best effort to understand the true nature of the universe and what makes it tick; western scientists or far eastern philosophers?

I like to become a more knowledgeable and nicer person (not necessarily more tolerant).

Maybe I was under the false impression that buddhism is supposed to make you wiser and more knowledgeable?

the extra superstitous junk in the trunk is meaningless yet important.

There's a famous story that shows what i mean....

2 american guys went to Japan to stay in a Zen monastery for a few months. Upon arrival, they were send to the abbot. The first american asked the abbot: "when do i get my head shaved so i can be a monk?" the other one said "if it was possible, i would like to keep my hair, i don't want to get my head shaved".
The abbot said, "ok, the first one can keep his hair, the second one has to shave right now". The second one got angry and asked why the one who wanted his head shaved could keep his hair. The abbot said: "Because he doesn't care about it".

So basically, the chants and sutras aren't necessary, but when you understand it and "are awake", you will see that it doesn't matter at all. All you do is live life, or die continously, second after second. You cannot change that (maybe only by killing yourself, but this opens another big barrel), so once you understand that, you can chant and recite sutras again. Then you might also understand why god or not god is unimportant.

From what I've just read I think buddhism should be avoided at all costs(at least for myself). It seems to be nothing else but the lame attempt to strip away everything human from humans. Is this why all the monks you see on the television seem so bored?

I know I'm sounding a bit stupid and naive here, but honestly I will never agree that we can never know.

Buddha has spoken about god and various other gods (Hindu). When asked about is there one almighty god he always said it doesn't matter, because if there is a god or not humans still have to gain enlightenment for themselves, god or gods wont help.

he also spoke of the Hindu gods kyomu mentioned, and heaven and hell as we know it. He said there are various levels of beings, some on higher planes some on lower planes, ( Krishna, Mara, demons, angels, ghosts, etc - he didn't use all these terms, I'm writing in terms a Christian would understand) each one on that level due to their karma, but they are also striving for enlightenment as they, like us, still have the endless cycle of death and life.

some were present as Buddha gave talks about enlightenment to listened to Buddha themselves - but humans could not see them as they were on different planes.

i hope this helps clarify some things for you.

lol, it's TOTALLY different from the original sin, it's simply the truth!

These are the "four noble truths":

   1. The Nature of Suffering (Dukkha):
"This is the noble truth of suffering: birth is suffering, aging is suffering, illness is suffering, death is suffering; sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief and despair are suffering; union with what is displeasing is suffering; separation from what is pleasing is suffering; not to get what one wants is suffering; in brief, the five aggregates subject to clinging are suffering."[9][10]
   2. Suffering's Origin (Samudaya):
"This is the noble truth of the origin of suffering: it is this craving which leads to renewed existence, accompanied by delight and lust, seeking delight here and there, that is, craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence, craving for extermination."[9][10]
   3. Suffering's Cessation (Nirodha):
"This is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering: it is the remainderless fading away and cessation of that same craving, the giving up and relinquishing of it, freedom from it, nonreliance on it."[9][10]
   4. The Way (Mārga) Leading to the Cessation of Suffering:
"This is the noble truth of the way leading to the cessation of suffering: it is the Noble Eightfold Path; that is, right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration."[11][12]

You obviously have to believe in karma, don't you? How can you gain good karma if it doesn't exist?

Sorry to be so picky about these things but I can not for the life of me understand why people insist on complicating these simple matters and invoke all kinds of "superstitious" or imaginary things. MAybe you do not understand what karma is? it's only cause and reaction. simple physics, or simplest philosophy.

I don't want to be picky myself, but YOU are the one making it all complicated, because you simply do not know much about these things and they are all new to you.

Well, do you believe karma exists as a real force? That you're gonna get what you deserve? Are they somehow linked with Newtonian physics? Does it require reincarnation? Fatpanda believes all these things without a shred of proof. Do you?

Lovemonkey, you do not understand karma. What you see as karma is what 80s american tv series and disney animation told you is karma.

Karma is cause and reaction, if you want to call this a "force", feel free to do it, it doesn't matter.

Just live your life, one moment at a time. All that matters is this moment, in fact it's all you have. And you will eventually realize that this little moment is a damn good moment. THAT is the way to live life.

Ok, so your way of looking at karma is as a metaphor? I've noticed as soon I push you guys on the "reality" of your philosophies you never give a proper answer and say "it doesn't matter". Then what's the point to begin with?

What you see as karma is what 80s american tv series and disney animation told you is karma.

Well no, I've thought of karma as a metaphor for "justice" if you will(non-existent force), but I got a bit confused when I discussed it with Fatpanda when he said he believed all things mentioned above(which require supernatural intervention). I was just curios if you did as well.

You have to let loose all those words and definitions. karma is karma. Stop trying to push it into "metaphor", "force", "superstitious", "god". This is western thinking, and it fails to describe karma.

the four noble truths are not a guide to live by, but simply an explaination as to how the world works, or should i say why it doesn't work.

the noble eightfold path is the guide to end suffering that the 4 noble truths describe, however you you would probably find them impossible to live by as you do not meditate - meditation is needed to purify and focus the mind, which helps with things like right mindfullness, right thought, right understanding, etc.

meditation is key.

good post!

Also, in buddhism, there aren't strict rules as in christianity. "Thou shalt not lie" means "thou shalt not lie", no matter what.

"Right speech"  in buddhism says you shouldn't lie as well, but in a certain situation "right speech" might mean that it is better to lie to someone.

This is much closer to humans than christianity.

Both donkeykong and myself have said sorry to our fellow getbiggers for previous wrong doings, and want to start a more positive way of posting and debating out fellow man/woman in getbig about bodybuilding, or anything - it is my belief in karma and doing good that led me and probably dk to post our apologies. We also believe in Buddhism,  hence the topic of Buddhism coming up as many fellow getbiggers like love monkey see it as a very positive thing.

This is much closer to humans than christianity.

i agree, i can't believe we have went so long no having these wonderful discussions dk, and everyone else that has participated on this glorious thread.  :)

It's all irrelevant drivel anyway as long as only egos are talking, which is the case in this thread of course.
Anyone who thinks he has 'got' it, is in fact an ego who has turned 'it' into an ideology to build himself up.

yes, it's difficult if you try to teach or speak about it, because this way you have to limit yourself to the illusion you live in.

You can only find out for yourself.

Let's be honest, it's impossible to teach it if you haven't realized enlightenment. I don't think anyone in this thread has. We have our glimpses maybe, but as soon as words leave our mouth, it's all tainted by the ego again.

I disagree on this one, as you can recite sutras and other stuff, even if you do not understand it all.

It's also the question is you can reach awakening (enlightment is a wrong translation) in this life. Some buddhist schools say yes, some no.

the problem with meditation is there are many different kinds, and you may need a specific one to gain maxiumum focus, for instance - focus on breath, mantra, yoga postures, etc you may try loats but never reach your full potential, unless you find the ideal meditation focus for you. Some need to meditate on love, some hate, etc

i havn't found mine yet  :(

That's a good example. If two buddhist schools fight about whether you can reach enlightenment (resp. awake to the reality of being enlightened already) in "this" life or the "next", IMO that's already the wrong path. This is fundamentalism, interpreting spiritual scripture literally and turning it into an ideology.

Of course you can teach certain aspects of a spiritual tradition but your words will never have the required transforming power to push your students into realizing the essential truth, something that's beyond any understanding the thinking mind is capable of anyway.

no because there were many buddha's actually, but if you mean Siddhārtha Gautama  - there is plenty of proof he existed, if you actually look.  ;)

please explain what you think i said about supernatural intervention ? and i will clarify.

the four noble truths are not a guide to live by, but simply an explaination as to how the world works, or should i say why it doesn't work.

the noble eightfold path is the guide to end suffering that the 4 noble truths describe, however you you would probably find them impossible to live by as you do not meditate - meditation is needed to purify and focus the mind, which helps with things like right mindfullness, right thought, right understanding, etc.

meditation is key.

aren't you a jew ?  jews used to realise the benefits of meditation and chanting, the kabbala etc

do you or have you ever practiced this ?

jesus, mohammed, moses all meditated  ;)

All of those figures with the exception PERHAPS of Mohammed were likely fictitious. Yes, I have done meditation for a while. Difficult stuff.

true in a sense, but your ego may still only repond to a specific type of meditation. Or perhaps i should say all will work eventually to focus the mind and achieve no thoughts, but some would allow you to obtain it quicker because its specifically how you work.

what we can agree on is the effects proper mediation brings, as there are many of the same descriptions of each stage.

meditation is hard  :(

Acutally i liked it a lot. Recently i stopped and couldn't motivate myself to go to the Zen Dojo though.

But i did it quite some time, 45mins sitting, then 10mins walking meditation and then 45mins again. Felt like a newborn everytime after it.

i seem to have went backward, when i first started i focussed on the breath and i felt great, i had a wave of energy start from my feet and move up to my chest, but i panicked everytime it got close to my neck, and came out quick - i don't know why.

i also got strange pulsating hard-ons  :-\

now i can't quiet my mind at al, every little thought pops in there when i try.

i think i want it too much, and i'm trying to force it ( a big no no) while my best results were when i was just experimenting to se if it really did anything i.e. no expectations.

there is a large Tibetan Buddhist monastery here in scotland called samye ling, i will have to go sometime for guidance.

you should always meditate in a group as a beginner. Makes it much easier.

Plus, you should just sit. Focusing on your breath is fine, but it should be mere counting to ten to calm your mind. At least, that's the Zen approach, other buddhist schools meditate over Mandala or Sutra texts, which is not so bad as well after all.

Yes meditation brings a lot of "effects". Very strange sensations can arise. But that's all irrelevant in the end IMO. You can have the most amazing out-of-body experiences, visions of other worlds, lucent dreams, even manage to quiet your mind completely for some time and still remain completely unaware in your every day life.

It's possible to speak about it but only in pointers. You can e.g. have two statements about awakening that totaly oppose each other and are still both true if they manage to break through the layers of our thinking mind and point us to the truth.

One example is "awakening can be attained" vs. "awakening cannot be attained". Your logic does not take into account that what the mind believes to know about "existence" has nothing to do with the "existence of enlightenment". One could say, since for the thinking mind, awakening cannot exist, it can also not be attained by it.

well i think your acually speaking about enlightenment here, not just in the one way that you are detailing about the way in which its possible to speak about enlightenment (two contradictory phrases which are both true) , but by doing so.....your actually inform about the state of enlightement, beyond just telling me in which way one can talk about it.

however, then again, if you can only speak about enlightenment through showing two opposing things which are both true (which is what you said), then your above writing can not be accurate about enlightenment, since it deviates from that set path which you said is the only possible way to speak on the subject matter.

maybe this is why monks are always quiet.  ;D

IMO most monks who are quiet, are quiet because their ego tells them that it will bring them closer to the truth.

your explanation would fall into that category,

you explained a way in which you could explain enlightenment

and in doing so, you explained enlightenment in a different way

by giving details about a way in which a person could speak abotu enlightenment without involving ego, i am given more clues as to the real nature of enlightenment

now about enlightenment.... i think its achievable but i dont know if its possile to have it permanently

i'm confused by your post too candy  > :(

buddha spoke about others who have attained enlightenment - he said many decide not to talk about what they have discovered, both because they know they could never explain it properly, and because once you realise the truth you think on another level of sorts. Also some simply decide to end the cycle of births and death right away.

budha chose to try to educate and guide others.  :)

It's only true awakening if it's permanent. Everything else is only an emotional outburst where the "enlightenment" is gone as soon as the emotion that comes with it is gone. However, awakening means nothing else than to realize that we are enligtened beeings all the way. If someone awakens, he is an enlightened beeing for his whole life, "before" and "after" his awakening. It comes with the realization that there is in fact no such thing as past and future and therefore it would be ridiculous to talk about when you are (have been) awake and when not.

That's the thing with spiritual scripture, the mind wants to take it literally.
Quite obviously, one can only be awake at one single moment, the now. It's the only moment our whole life happens in.

Whenever I click the "show new replies to your posts" button, this is always near the top, but I usually just click on it then get out because I find the topic so boring.  Wish I never would have posted on it.  >:(

But good job on the detective work my Arab friend.  ;)

No worries man, I'm a bottom bitch and make shit up as I go along because my real life friends pick on me.
BKD, bro, I appreciate your honesty, but this isn't The Dr. Phil board.

If you're having troubles, feel free to start your very own thread asking for advice. :)
