Keith was not a nice guy to many... He had some great stories and was personally fine to most, but if he didn't like you, he would be completely vile. Often to the point of what some would perceived as imbalanced.

In all honesty, he should have been nicer.

I got to talk to Keith several times on the phone because we both knew Ray Mentzer. Keith was an okay guy to me and had a hell of a sense of humour. He had this fart machine that got laughs wherever he went.

I think he stuggled a bit to pay some bills but he never did open the gym in the sky because of the economic downturn and a falling out with Pete Grymkowski. We had a lot of laughs at that buffoon, Goodrum.

Keith was the best storyteller on Getbig. He paid his dues, too, because he benched over 550 and won a top arm wrestling title. The guy was fair dinkum.

He was good to his daughters and grand children who adored him. Why not, he was generous and giving to them.

No, Keith never talked about Robby Robinson. Robby was a contender and yet that little guy Zane beat him. Was it politics? Was it his colour? Guys that good have to wonder if prejudice plays a part in this culture. Sergio Oliva and Serge Nubret were screwed big time. No black won a Mr America until 1970 when Chris Dickerson won.

Keith got bitten by a spider and it impacted on him and changed his life big time. He suffered for years. His leg would swell up to 31 inches.....his calf that is! Every time he started to do something about his obesity he would get ill and end up in hospital. So, we have no idea what he was faced with. He battled on and did what he could but it was a pity that he moved to Vegas from Hawaii because he left his kids there. He was fortunate to have a mate who helped him out in the last couple of years before he died. Yes, our own Stunt Movie.

He was a good fellow but this bit here is absolute bullshit.  In his more lucid moments, he admitted that he could have done better.  Let's not pretend the man walked on water, Vince.  He was talking about losing weight for years.  It's frustrating, watching someone claim that shit and then basically do fuck all.  The whole board was pulling for him to get rid of some of it (that in itself is indicative of the magnitude of the problem).

Hmmmm..... What to type here  considering everything I had to do with Keith....

I liked Keith.....He was a great story teller and personally was a lot of fun....

Business wise....He stole money from me but I forgave him in the end....

Porn wise.... Yes he was addicted....I am sure there are no members here that knew that Keith had started a porn site and was making some money from it... I do because it was something he wanted me to invest in...

I have quite a few stories on Keith....Many very interesting... Some worth telling and some I wonder if I even should discuss since he has passed... I will leave it up to you to decide if you want to hear them or not.....My view on when you die who gives a shit what is said... Your dead.

Keith was one of those men, the select few, that you knew were special.

He was among those men who could walk on water, and perform feats of grandeur, and will be missed.

He may have started a porn business, but it was merely to help women with their careers, not out of selfish reasons.

Keith had a porn site? That is something he had in common with Goodrum, I mean, Goodrum boasted of having had such a site. One would have to live in Vegas to have the mind set that just about anything goes.

He never asked me to invest in any enterprise, porn or otherwise. I almost brought him out to Australia to help me promote my gym. Had second thoughts when I found out his size.

But he was a good promoter and could convince others to have a go at some new business. He felt he had the recipe for a MMA gym in Vegas. Was going to be huge and so on. Well,

I wondered how it was going to make a profit because of the competition there and the cheap rates for memberships, etc. Obviously others weren't convinced and anyway the property

market went sour and that changed everything because people didn't have much spare money for luxuries.

Come on, Travis, spill the beans. What stories do you have that we want to hear!  :o

On March 1, 1998 my life changed forever.

I woke up and my lower leg was killing me.  I went to the hospital with 103 fever and barely able to walk.  I was bit by what the doctors told me was a brown recluse spider.  To make a very very long story short, I spent the next 28 days in the hospital and the following 6 months barely able to walk and actually crawling on my hands and knees and spending hours in the bath tub because I couldn’t get out.  I moved to Las Vegas.

My leg less than 24 hours after getting bit.

I opted to keep my leg against the doctor’s recommendation of amputation.  There are times I regret that decision, but overall I am happy I did.  I have had many complications and other medical things happen to me as a result of this bite.  The most damaging and discouraging is the weight gains due to the inactivity and depression that had set-in because I just couldn’t workout or do things I am accustomed to doing.  I went from riding my bike 28 miles a day 3 to 4 days a week and pulling a 120 lb. truck tire around Diamond Head Crater, still benching 500, to being stuck in a bathtub for hours because of the pain I had in my leg and lower back.  I would literally at times be crawling through my condo in Las Vegas on my hands and knees and collapse in the middle of the floor for an hour or more.  This intense pain lasted for the next 4 years.  There were times I couldn't get out of my car in the parking lot of my condo and would sleep in my car.

Monthly reactions to my lower leg resulted in 103 degree fever, severe reddening of the lower leg, peeling of the skin, tremendous swelling, calf would swell to 31"+, fluid leakage from the lower leg and extreme pain.   As recent as Christmas of 2006 I spent two weeks in the hospital in Waimea, HI because my leg swelled so badly.  I am not blaming the spider bite for the weight gain.  I can't blame anyone but myself.  All the years I was training I didn't diet like a bodybuilder.  I generally ate what I wanted because I knew I would just work it off.  I was very active.  The spider bite just made it hard or almost impossible to do any kind of training.  The pain was that bad and I have a very high pain tolerance.  I just never thought about the repercussions from lying around the house and eating.  I didn't do anything different or more than I ever did before the bite.  But, the big difference was I wasn't in the gym or training like before either.  I spent the first 40 years of my life being so active and physical; it all just came to a sudden stop.  But, I truly think that it was those 40 years of being extra healthy got me through the past 10 years.

A Totally Different Person

Well from the inactivity and depression that set in I ended up gaining 200 lbs. in about 13 months.  I blame myself for everything.  I could have dieted but I just never thought about the long term effects.  I am very embarrassed and I have become a sort of "recluse" myself.  I went from being the life of the party and being so happy 24 hours of the day to staying home and not wanting to see anyone.  Just until recently I would avoid seeing any of my old friends I grew up with or knew.  I would make up excuses why not to see them.  I was so embarrassed the way I looked.  Growing up and later in life people always looked up to me.  I used to have people come up to me to tell me how much I have helped them in their lives.  Now I was weak, fat and lost all my confidence.  I hated myself and I hated the way I looked.  I just couldn't see anyone.  To say I never thought about just ending everything would be a lie.  The thing that kept me from doing anything that stupid was when I thought about my two daughters and grandchildren.  I know they love me, I know they would miss me.  I just couldn't think about how much it would hurt them.  So I would immediately lose any thought of doing something stupid.  I truly owe my "will to live" to them.

My strength has diminished greatly too (from bench pressing just shy of 600 lbs. to barely doing 225 lbs.)  This was the most embarrassing and humiliating part of the past several years besides the weight gain.  It seemed like just when I am getting back into shape and getting my strength back I would get sick again.  Just a couple summers ago I had my bench back up over 400 lbs. and doing reps with 3I5 lbs. on the seated military press.  Then that Christmas I ended up in the hospital cause my leg swelled up so bad.  I loved going to the gym everyday and riding my bike and rollerblading.  That is what I miss more than anything.  And it's unbelievable the depression that sets in.  There are so many stories yet so little space.

Making a Comeback in 2011

Well, now I am feeling 100 times better and am back in the gym.  My strength is what is coming back very fast.  I have set a goal for myself and look forward to reaching it soon.  I want to be here to see my kids and grandkids grow up.  I want to see my old friends.  I want to bench press over 500 lbs. again and be able to walk anywhere and have people look at me because I am muscular again, not fat.  I want my life back and I am NOW motivated to do it.  When I do, look for me on Oprah.  I will post progress pics as I go along.

And, thank you for reading all this shortened version of my life but I am far from being a writer and write how I talk.  So the people who know me can easily imagine me saying what I write.  I am done procrastinating.

We don't get many celebrities on Getbig. Keith was that. Because of his health he was limited in what he could do so I guess he spent a lot of time on the internet. Getbig was one of his homes online and boy did he have a lot to say.

If he had not been bitten by that awful spider I doubt we would have seen Keith here. Keith was a tough guy, physically, so he didn't complain about his health, fitness and situation. I can assure you he suffered plenty and knew what he

had to do to regain his health. That was something he couldn't overcome. People who are not morbidly obese have no idea how hard it is to lose heaps of weight. He tried several times only to be twarted by health problems. It is a worry

that he might have used some prescription drugs to assist some weight loss that might have contributed to his demise. Stunt Movie will know but it is just speculation. People were writing to Keith with all kinds of advice.

Interesting to see how one's real personality/persona is perceived by those who only know an individual via the internet.

A lot of these comments speak more about the commenter's personality/lifestyle than the individual they write about.

I knew Keith and his family and his friends and class mates and even his high school principal probably longer than any other living individual .... and I hope to review each of these posts in an effort to agree or disagree with with most of them.

And I'll do my best to make every comment or rebuttal as honest as I possibly can. The good as well as the bad!

So give me some time and I'll do my best to give your some honest facts and points of interest in an attempt to describe the real Keith while he was here amongst us.

And I think that anyone who "ACTUALLY KNEW"  Keith will agree entirely  once my sermon is over.

THE BEEF remembers Keith still owes THE BEEF a $100.

THE BEEF

Further to this . . . As THE BEEF logged on today ( just home after a 114 hr week ) THE BEEF started to think about the post THE BEEF made on THE BEEF's supper break and the Getbig community. To be candid THE BEEF gets a lot of THE BEEF's breaking news on Getbig, has been here for years and finds some degree of pleasure posting, interacting, learning from / with the Getbig community.

Over the years THE BEEF has had THE BEEF's ass handed to THE BEEF and handed a few ass out as well, in retrospect all in good fun.THE BEEF has been put in time out, had Ron pm THE BEEF and ask for a phone call to " talk," all part of a unique, rich experience. The $100 referred to above was a bet made between Onlyme and Hurricane Beef. It was a board bet which THE BEEF and Onlyme fought over in the boards view and in PM's. These types of things are sportsman's bets and  based in a weird form of enjoyment,  at the time taken to heart, defended and fought for, but in reality just entertainment and nothing more. THE BEEF was out of line bringing it up in this thread and I ( Adam ) have every confidence that had our bet been a serious one, Keith would have done everything in his power to make good on it.

THE BEEF likes to think of a day when THE BEEF arrives in that great weight room in the sky and is greeted by Onlyme . . . A massive arm will be placed around THE BEEF's " barn-door " wide shoulders and THE BEEF will receive THE BEEF's $100. THE BEEF's only wish is that Onlyme does not stick that "C-note " where the sun does not shine on THE BEEF.

On one hand I sort of respect Vince Basile because despite his age (and the obvious "creepy" vibes that we're genetically programmed to feel when a used human is interacting with us), he's genuine - but on the other, it does turn my stomach a little, to see someone who barely knows a guy romanticising him to such a degree (and still talking about Goodrum).  It's not so much creepy as it is overstepping the connection level.

I mean, it's just as bad if you were on this board when Titus (which I was) was around and maybe you had the odd run in with them and then walking around telling people you know a convicted murderer ::)  Some of you guys have met, fair enough, now you know each other in real life - the rest of you don't know each other.

I don't know, I'm not going to go on about this but ask yourself this question - would you want "somedude" from the internet taking it upon themselves to speak as they knew you well?  I wouldn't.  I could count the people who really know me on one hand.  Maybe one finger, to be honest.  Shit, if I met anybody from this board once or maybe talked to them on the phone - I would not claim to know them well, I would not be conducting painful message board eulogies.

Vince, this is not real life.  It's not a board full of real people.  This is no place to invest anything of your real self in.  I mean (and I'm not singling you out here for anything other than the role playing game nature of verbalising this), can you imagine saying to someone "this is my friend, "Chaos"?  baha.

The thing I'd most like stunt to confirm is that Keith didn't do as much as he could have, to mitigate his weight problems.

(And just to be clear, I have in the very distant past attended IRC meets and yes, seriously, the internet names were used.  It was skincrawl material).

I think you'll find that Vince was Keith's good friend and as such, Vince would definitely know the date.

Look at what I just posted, before you - it's blatantly obvious I was being sarcastic.  Anbody can find out the date by finding the RIP thread which is easy.

Huricane, Thanks for that $100 clarification. I'll go into that general subject when I get the time and opportunity to write about my old friend (and sometimes enemy) .... Keith.

But since I just read ROCKET's most recent request ... ("The thing I'd most like stunt to confirm is that Keith didn't do as much as he could have, to mitigate his weight problems.").

Let me proceed to elaborate on that a bit.

That's one hell of a good question, ROCKET!

And a very difficult one to answer honestly with a simple "Yes" or "No", so I gotta tell you this story and let you decide what you consider the corrrect answer is.

First I gotta tell you that I knew Keith when he was pulling tires around Diamond Head, doing tv ads for McDonald's, Apple, and some shaving supplies along with another once-upon-a-time friend by the name of Don Ross.

Those were the good old days when Keith was in top shape and bending arms bigger than my torso (almost).

And those were the days when he was doing all he could for No Hope in Dope which organization I knew nothing about until Keith convinced me that it was organized to get kid's' lives back on track.

And those were the days when I had the pleasure of working with him as part of an athletic program for disadvantaged kids.

We knew each other in those good old days but not well enough to develop any sort of friendship until much later on when I came to realize that this guy was really a good person who really enjoyed helping others.

One days we all found ourselves helping the US Navy Special Service office at Pearl Harbor  during their annual Bodybuilding and Physical Fitness Event.

There happened to be an hour break between events and we wanted to do something to hold the crowd in the seats  during that lull.

So Keith stood up and took the mike and asked if there was anyone in the audiance who would like to challange him. About 30 of the navy guys jumped out of the audience and formed a line ....ready, willing, and able to accept the challenge.

So Keith lined them up with the smallest in the front of the line and the biggest guys at the rear of the line and announced to one and all that he would give $100 to anyone who beat him right there on the spot.

That offer got everyone motivated and eager to do some damage and leave that stage with a hundred dollars in their unbroken fist.

Within six minutes or less there were still about 10 bruisers ready to win that hundred but they too were gone six minutes later.

No one won that $100 but each contener had a great time trying.

And then a little 6 year old kid came on stage under the supervision and encouragement of his dad  who held him up to the table ...... and guess what?!!

Yep! Keith lost!

But he didn't pay that kid $100.

But he did give the dad $10 for the kid's favorite ice-cream who left that stage with the biggest smile on any kid's face.

(Or so he told me much later.)

Keith was always there to support kids and grown-ups with this kind of activity.

And he always did it to the great enjoyment of all.

That was the good side of Keith.

But to be perfectly honest ....Keith had many "sides" which we'll explore eventually.

BUT ... regarding Keith's determination to lose a ton and a half of bodywt......

I myself weight 215 to 220 and can still outrun or outwalk most get biggers without tiring out.

And I say that because I've never seen Keith to eat a bigger portion that I enjoy myself.

He always ate less than I do and we had many a fine meal at most of the LV buffets, so I can say that as an absolute fact.

He never ate large portions of food, .... but what he did eat was certainly fattening.

He did like cookies, Key Lime Pie, and those red licorice things.

But never enough to blow him up to the weight he carried upon his death.

I honestly believe that his obese problem actually did have something to do with that damn spider bite, but I'm no spider expert and don't have any medical knowledge to  ascertain that as a matter of fact.

In my attempt to be as honest as possilble here, I seem to be getting off subject but to answer you with complete honestly, ROCKET, .....

NO! Keith never did do enough to overcome his weight problem!

His big problem was that he never exercised enough and definitely not from eating too much.

We'd take him to the gym where he'd love to play handball.

But within five to ten minutes, he'd have to take a break and get some rest and spend the remainder of his "work out time" talking about his good old days when he was hard to beat at any sporting endeavor.

An there were always some athletes who were spellbound and willing to listen and ruin their own work out time in the process as a lot of them recalled him from his better days and always enjoyed those conversations.

Sorry for that but without an editor on my shoulder, it's simply the way I write first drafts.

More to come if there is any interest.

As THE BEEF reads that old farts posts, they seem to be just a rehashing of things others have written. THE BEEF doubts that clown ever met Keith.

THE BEEF remembers Keith still owes THE BEEF a $100.

THE BEEF

pm me your address and i'll send you $100 if you never mention this debt again.

I remember I was giving him shit about diabetes when he challenged me to a Blood test analysis. Whoever had the healthiest readings would win...yep...$100. LOL.  Later on he tried to get me to buy one of his MMA gyms or at least invest.  Of course I am sure many people got those once in a lifetime offers.  ;D

I miss the old bastard that's for sure.

Thanks for that story, Stunt.  I appreciate that.  To his credit, Keith never claimed here that he was doing all he could to lose weight.  I just have a low tolerance for other people spreading bullshit.
