Side note: No player can legitimately be described as being the "best". At a certain level of virtuosity and facility, there is only different and/or favourite.

this. They simoly reach legendary/god tier status in their respective field.
I.E.
SRV, Eric Clapton = blues gods
Zakk Wylde = southern metal god
Van Halen = popish hard rock god
And so one. You have to define them into specific criteria because theyre all great in their own right, theyre just different.

Les Paul ...another guy in a class by himself. Think he's still doing limited gigs.
Dozens of unnamed recording studio players...never seem to get the break that a few others well known guitarist have over the years. Great talents, shitty luck or no luck at all.

Django did have all his fingers, however he 3rd, 4th fingers where paralyzed.
Django was a one of the greats. It was more that he created a unique style, scales & way of playing.
Stochelo Rosenberg is one of the few that can replicate the soul of Gypsy Jazz in it's true form.

As mentioned before, it's hard to call any one guitarist as the best ever, but he was great for sure. I remember going to see Tommy Emmanuel play and he was so good that I couldn't pick up my guitar for 3-4 months after....I just didn't see any point to it. There was one point in the middle of his show he asked if there were any guitar players in the audience....I couldn't raise my hand because after seeing what this guy could do with a guitar I felt embarrassed to call myself a guitar player.

My friend, I mourn his loss. His music has seen me through many a good time and bad...when Paco played a rondena....his tremolo..sigh...amazing man.

Anybody who's been playing an instrument for a long time, 10+ years, on a steady basis better be impressed with Paco.
He's dynamic, crisp, accurate, fast, has great tone and feels.
