i really dont know which one it is: being black or an Arab making u NOT helping me!!!!

OK.... lets make it to public and see if there is a better expert than u will be willing to answer or help me..... ;)

i am flying to my show for 6hrs on the plane and i dont really have the key how to manage it with water intake and the other stuff to stay tight....as u know befor i travel to NY for the NOC i was looking so hard and ready i arrived and the whole day i was LOOKING GREAT but day by bay i started to fade! i thought if i come early 5-6 days befor the show is good, but it was wrong idea.... now i am planing to arrive the same day of the show at 7am and the show at 4pm.

  # how to control the water during flying? shall i carb load  during my flight?
  # what do i have to eat the whole 10hrs befor the show when i arrive?!
  # is there any thing i should do befor i travel? meals or supplements!

i know it sound stupid but as u know i didnt get use to travel Long distance for competing.... and i am always willing to learn and try things out so i know what works for me and what not.

++ i might looked sharper in the pre-judging but not like the show day.. but i wish i could keep the same size that when i arrived to NY.. i looked fuller and dryer....

plz guys NO ROOM for jokes, if u can help me plz do and if not, it will be great if u save ur jokes and fun for a another time in another Thread but not this time.. i am 10days away from my show and i have enough Sh++ to look after :-\

one thing you might want to try Sami is getting to the city of the show a week early if you can afford it and then following your regular schedule that you follow at home, that should keep things as normal as possible for you.

so you're saying that the flight fucked you up that much? maybe the stress of all the travel is making you hold water.

Sami I truly believe that despite the fact you didn't pull it together coming to NY early that its wrong to blame coming early.  By coming early you give yourself the best chance of being ready.  If you weren't ready and you were fading you got your timing wrong.  Much easy to get it right when you're settled in.

You should speak to guys at the show, I mean thats basically where you'll get decent advice if people are willing to talk.

Failing that PM milos and see how far he will go to advise you.

Sami i was just reading through the pre contest bible and it seems that most of the pros just stick to their normal schedule. A few mention that they might have a bit more water than usual due to the dehydrating effects of a flight, but other than that just clockwatch. But..... your the first ive  ever seen arrive the day of !!! - Good luck!!!

I have read that nearly all pros try to show up as early as possible as flying screws up the water retention (Don Youngblood would actually drive to every event - even if it was across the country).  By flying in so close to the show time you risk the travel stress, not being able to carb up when you should, and in the worst possible scenario - missing the event due to a canceled/changed flight.

I won't pretend to know the fine details of the final two days prep.  But there are enough experts here that should be able to give you some good advice.  Even PM another Pro who is on here - get advice from a few if possible.  That may give you a few options to try out.

sami i would much rather arrive days earlier than having to deal with the stress of flying the day of the show.

but it sounds like your plans are already set for your flight.

i assume you are not using any strong diueretics so you should cut your water about 10-12 hours before prejudging....so i would stop drinking somewhere around 4-6 that morning...so that would be about an hour before you land...it would normaly be best to increase your water intake while flying but it is so close to the show you need to limit your water while you are on the flight...i would drink about 8 ounces of water about 20 minutes after each of your carb meals...you will have to be carbing up on the plane to stay full....and since you are only carbing for 24-36 hours you need to take in some fast acting carbs...so if you plan to start your carb up on friday morning, by the time you get on the plane you will have already had atleast 12 hours to begin carbing up...while you are on the plane i would be taking in a little bit of carbs every hour of the flight....its hard to make any specific recomendations without knowing what you have done in the past as far as your carb up goes...i helped a friend last year who did the usa and had to fly to vegas from the east coast while he was carbing....what he did was eat a small baked potato and a tablespoon or 2 of grape preserves every hour of the flight...it worked well for him....but i would definetly make sure you have your carbs with you on the plane and keep eating.

The dehydrating effects of the plane is due in part to the extemely low humidity on the plane.  Unless you live in a tropical climate, your body won't even notice the change.

Stressing about the flight will hold much more water than the actual flight.

Tre has on several occasions made racist remarks regarding Arabs.

BTW Sami, look for advices from guys with a good track record, such as Disgusted, Milos, Shawn, DJ or CT (Thibedaux).

It's difficult to estimate the advices coming from the peanut gallery, so stick with known sources IMO.

Sami,

Lemme get this straight. You're a Pro Bodybuilder and you're asking a bunch of pencil-neck geeks and fat bastards for contest prep conditioning tips???

What's next??
Lee Priest asking us when he should upshift in his next Drag race?
Donald Trump asking the homeless to help him identify real estate investment opportunities?
Markus Ruhl asking True Adonis how to add more muscle to his frame?
Donald Trump asking Flex Wheeler to help him identify real estate investment opportunities? (Oops, covered that)
OJ Simpson asking Craig Titus how to get away with murder?

I could go on, but I digress....

Now that's not fair, Sami.  When I replied to you, I said that I thought you looked fantastic in your previous show, but more importantly, that - because you are a pro - I was not qualified to give you advice on final preparations for a show.

It wasn't that I did not wish to help you and it certainly wasn't because you're 'Black or Arab'...it's that I don't have the subject matter expertise necessary to be able to give you sound advice.

Thankfully, you're still in the right place - GetBig is full of people with a lot more knowledge than me on this subject who will gladly share their information with you.

That said, I wish you continued success in your bodybuilding career and hope this little misunderstanding is soon forgotten.

Tre has on several occasions made racist remarks regarding Arabs.

Nice try, but not applicable here.

My telling Sami that I couldn't answer his question had nothing to do with race or ethnicity - it had to do with the fact that I'm not qualified to give the answers he was seeking in regards to show prep.  I told him that there were much better people to speak with on this subject.

Not that it matters, but at the time, I thought he was Black anyway, so whether I'm racist (against non-Blacks) or not would not have factored into the decision to suggest that he get the required info from more knowledgeable sources.  I did the responsible thing and FWIW, would've given the same response to anyone who asked.

I never claimed you to be racist towards "non-Blacks".

I called you on your racist remarks towards Arabs.

Don't include other ethnicities into that.

also, disgusted knows his stuff, ask him via pm.

But Disgusted is very good.
I nevery thought Shari would place in the top 5 in any show.

I remember something about Sami not being someone that you want to trust...and now he's here asking our advice- why not still go with "Team The Game" when he got you as far as he did? ??? ??? ??? ::) ::) ::)

From what i have seen of Sami he is a very very nice guy and seems to care allot.  He has been nothing but great on this board so whatever else happens it probably was justified.  The thing I do find funny is that not one person who posts on this board looks better than Sami and he is asking for advice.

I asked a question, the post Aliamini had here was pretty incriminating towards you. I posed a question, so if anyone else remembered it too, apparently nobody does, or I dreamed it up.
Also, if you were to have the said incriminating post be true, then you hook up with somebody else and scam them....that person that would have been scammed may have wanted a warning. But that is a moot point now, since nobody remembers the post, posted a link, or you have cleared it up with any other people involved.

Post by: The Luke on October 14, 2006, 06:10:57 PM
Sami,

My name is Luke (my getBig screen-name is "The Luke"), I'm a moderator on the GetBig Natural board.

I'm not sure if you want my advice... as a lifetime natural I'm a little out of the loop regarding steroids and cutting drugs, however I have prepped a lot of naturals for competition and it just so happens I know EXACTLY why you are holding water after long-haul flights.

The reason why flying causes water retention is due to a couple of factors.

The lack of humidity is NOT one of these factors.

The water retention effect is due to:
-prolonged exposure to lowered air pressure
-mild oxygen deprivation

*Lowered air pressure:
Air travel is expensive, maintaining atmospheric pressure within the cabin is expensive as it requires continuous pumping of air into the aircraft. To cut costs airlines allow the pressure within the cabin to drop to tolerable levels thereby reducing the pressure differential they must maintain.

This is why your ears pop on an aeroplane. If the cabin remained fully pressurised you wouldn't get a pressure differential inside your ears (alleviated by yawning, which opens the eustachian tubes in the back of the throat). It's also why blood flows to your genitals more readily; the pressure drop during a flight gives men erections and makes women horny... most of the reason why people attempt to have sex in a toilet too small to shit in... and part of the reason why air-hostesses are easy.

There's nothing you can do about this effect, although it usually disipates within a few hours.

*Oxygen deprivation:

This is the main culprit... and it's something few people undestand about air-travel, partly because the airlines don't advertise it.

When air-travel became commonplace in the early sixties airlines noticed that a lot of the passengers were running around the aisles as giddy as horny teenagers and the nervous flyers were simply hysterical. The giddyness was due to the pressure drop... associated blood redistribution, horniness and light-headedness (coupled with the thrill of being in an airplane). The hystericals?.... Well, some people just don't like flying.

The airlines started offering alcoholic drinks in-flight... they ended up with giddy and hysterical drunks.

The answer?

Drop the oxygen level... from 21% (the normal level on Earth) to a more sedate 15-17%.

Result: lethargic, sleepy passengers (even the hysterical ones)... and alert horny hostesses (who acclimatise to the reduced oxygen level after just a few weeks).

How does this relate to bodybuilding?

Well, altitude sickness is characterised by chronic edema (water retention), whether it expresses itself via fluid build-up in the lungs... or more dangerously.... inside the head.

Like all reactions within the human body, there is no on/off switch... it's more a matter of degrees. Extra-muscular and intermuscular water retention after a long haul airplane flight is just that... a "slight" touch of altitude sickness.

The longer the flight, the more severe the effect as plane cabins also have high CO2 levels (stuffiness). The carbon dioxide adheres to the haemoglobin more readily than oxygen and is mildly toxic... the side effect of this toxicity is water retention.

However there are a few things you can try:

-Get a note from your doctor explaining that you need to use oxygen during the flight. Use the mask on the plane... an Arab (or anyone else for that matter) carrying a gas tank onto a plane might upset a few passengers... especially if it's a flight into the US from the Middle East. Oxygen during the flight will stop the edema in it's tracks.

-Spend six weeks living 10,000 feet (3,000 m) above sea level immediately before the contest. This will help somewhat... but won't completely stop the water retention. Although it will greatly help.

-Use chromium picolinate (200 mcg of active chromium per day) for a week before (and during) carbing up... that might offset the flight induced edema. DO NOT USE CHROMIUM WITH EXOGENOUS INSULIN!

-Get your doctor to prescribe a red-blood-cell/haemoglobin increasing drug (something along the lines of EPO). Word of warning though... these drugs are lethally dangerous if used without competent medical supervision.

-Sleep in a hypobaric chamber for a few weeks prior to the competition. (that's HYPObaric not HYPERbaric)

All of the above may well alleviate the problem, although the cheapest and easiest way to do it is arrive at least a month prior to the competition (six weeks is better)... or more reasonably, stop using any and all steroids two weeks before the show (that also works).

Hope this helps.
The Luke

PS-I've heard a vitamin B12 injection prior to the flight can help... but can't confirm this.

As someone who travels to compete a fair amount I have a very simple solution..... get there prior.

Planning to arrive the day of a show is never good. Forget all the water retention issues...how about flights being later or cancelled.

I generally arrive at my destination with a few days to spare.

Arriving the day of the show is just stupid...And i'm not saying you are doing this Sami however if you don't come in great shape to the show, do everyone a favor and don't blame the flight...That would seem too obvious and would make some people believe that you knew you weren't going to be in shape so you did this on purpose......

You however don't seem like the kind of guy that uses excuses so forget about what i just wrote.. ;D

The Luke has given great advice, beat me to posting most of it.

Long flights tend to see a lot of blood pooling in certain bodyparts while hardly reaching full circulation in others.  This is why it is important to stretch your legs and walk around every so often, as being in contest mode is already enough strain on the body, you could risk thrombosis as well by remaining seated for long periods.

I would suggest increasing water intake, perhaps a mild potassium supplement.  Arriving one day early and drawing the extra water out via diuretics before carbing up.

the passport age is 33.... the real age which is first time i say it on internet Boards is 29 and i said that in my recent MM interview in NY after the NOC....... i got that age in a funny story, in 1994 i won IFBB Mr. Asia for the 2nd time and still i can win 1995 but the federation changed my date of birth so i can move to Seniors and make bigger medals... so at that time i thought having older age will help me to get the legal driving age. so it wasnt a big deal and still.. so i did senior Asia 1996 got 3rd then 1997 2nd then 1998 got 1st  ;D it was cool that year by year i was moving up.....

Hey Sami!  Good luck in your upcoming contests.  I've had to travel many hours via flight for competitions.  I always make sure that I arrive 3-4 days prior to competition.  After 30 hrs of traveling (sometimes 12-13 hrs in the air at a time) one way, I am holding a ton of water.  I try to drink 2-3 gal of water during the travel period.  I always bring my food on the plane.  I usually don't carb up till I get there and I try to bring what I need with me and not rely on what is in that particular country.  Trying to get rid of the excess water is always fun.  I try to do some light cardio and get a sweat going or early enough, i might use a sauna for a short period of time.  Diuretics aren't really an option for me, so I don't have any experience with that.  I just try to make sure I am in contest condition before I get on the plane.  Glad to see you changed your flight plans because that is too risky.  Especially if the airlines lose your luggage.  (I always carry on my contest stuff.  My luggage got "delayed" one time in the Czech Republic and I was freaked out!  Good thing I arrived early enough to get it back in time.)  Again, good luck!

Is there a problem now at airports with bringing in extra fluids such as water? What's a BB to do now? Just avoid it completely as they fly, correct?

I think I would try to make arrangements with the airline for extra water.  If that's not possible, I would just make friends/bother the crap out of the flight attendants till they gave me 2-3 L of water.

i am flying to my show for 6hrs on the plane and i dont really have the key how to manage it with water intake and the other stuff to stay tight....as u know befor i travel to NY for the NOC i was looking so hard and ready i arrived and the whole day i was LOOKING GREAT but day by bay i started to fade! i thought if i come early 5-6 days befor the show is good, but it was wrong idea.... now i am planing to arrive the same day of the show at 7am and the show at 4pm.

Thanx to all of u members and Moderators..... ;)

Sami,

this is no easy task (to answer your question)...

Also - don't fly day before the show...Rather -go there early 2-3-4 days before...so you will not have to deal with water retention due to your flight...

One thing I can tell you IF you have long flight - try to walk around on the plane...You will certainly have less water retention if you do that...

Also - on the plane ride it is much safer NOT EATING or not eat too many carbs (or at all)..Protein is fine...

But - everything depends on your regular diet and stage that you are in...

You should TEST what you want to do at the contest WAY BEFORE...
Maybe 4 weeks out, 3 weeks out...2 weeks out...etc

Try to replicate everything that you plan to do last few days before the show IN ADVANCE and see how your body reacts 9with exception of flying just for the sake of doing exactly the same thing... ;D).

What I mean by that - if you are not doingcarb depletion/loading - than you cruise in with your regular diet...

If you chose to load and deplete - than you should certainly TEST your protocol...

Some like to LOAD in advance and than back off, some like to load few days before the show - going into the show...and some load just at the last minute (day before, night before or even morning of the show...)

It is too complicated to find you a best method without knowing all the variables (your training, cardio, diet, water intake, carbs, protein, fats....etc)

I will say that OFF COURSE - everyone can be ripped...
Just deplete into the show...(hundreds of people do that and usually they are very successful...of being ripped. But, many loose too much muscle, size and/or fullness and some just can't afford that...)

There are safe methods and risky ones...
Sometimes it is worth risking...and sometimes just doesn't make sense...

I am sure that now you know exactly what to do ;)...JUST DO IT!

if you don't overeat and drink plenty 2 days is fine IMO... seen people suck in and look better with this timeframe just don't be too flat when you get on the plane... generally a few days later though you will look a lot worse

The comment was made in jest for one, and if one looks at the true concept of his comment it was referring to the anti-Muslim sentiment, and ridiculing it. It was an anti-racism comment if you will. Rob is far from racist, and actually has very all encompassing world and racial viewpoints.

I get beat up on the General board for my assertion that elements of the US govt were complicit in 911.  I assert that this anti-islamic fervor in the US is nothing but a tool of hatred used to justify war overseas.   I argue every day that extremists exist in every culture, and judging the entire group by one comment is asinine.  You either didn't read what I wrote, don't understand it, or you are dying to be offended.

Re-read my comment.  It is very obviously a knock against our overly-aggressive, misplaced action.  Instead of investigating NORAD for standing doen on 9/11, we're strip searching people for having 4 0z. of water.  My own father - white guy that looks like Bruce willis - was actually searched and detained last night because he was flying with a good friend of his who owns a business but happens to be of middle eastern decent.

...and I'm more disgusted that some moderator was fucking blind enough to delete it.  Ignorance, and a blind desire to be offended.  Man up, do your research, and grow the hell up.

Rob, it's just any comment referring us to terrorists just gets on my nerves.. Ever since September 11 my life has completely changed, and I get looked down upon and made fun of because I am Persian and Muslim.. It was just before the revolution when the Shah of Iran and Nixon were great friends, and the Shah and JFK, and his wife and Jackie O.. But then those dicks took over our country, and have ruined each of our lives and our reputations.. along with other Muslimes such as Osama and Sadaam.. Just to let you guys know, none of us Persians like this regime, our their extremists views.. all we want is our Shah back (his son) this regime gone, and we want to be great friends again with the great nation (the U.S).. 99 percent of us hate the regime btw..

I'm sorry Rob, for taking it out of context, and next time I'll read more carefully.. I'm just sick of seeing Muslim and Terrorist in the same sentence.. I hope you understand..

no prob man.  I agree completely - it's the same kind of racism which was carefully cultivated to get an entire generation of Americans to hate all Germans & Japanese (40s), Koreans (50s), Vietnamese (60-70s) and now Muslims.  Without that kind of hatred, the population will not support a war (and as we all know - wars are very good for the business of empirebuilding, the goal of what we do here in the US).  Our people are conditioned to mistrust every muslim on every plane - when on 9/11, it was quite a team effort (Arabs in cockpit but white guys in ties keeping fighter pilots on the ground).

Just because 1% of a certain population does something, our media and leaders paint a broad stroke of the entire group, so our nationalistic drive kicks in, and we just wanna bomb the shit out of them.   Osama, Al Q, and the Mujahadeen - they were created and funded by the US to keep the Russians from taking afghan/caspian basin - and useful today for justifying the wars our leaders want.  The crazy bombers and nuts on the streets in the middle east have no idea how bad they're being pwned... US $ to Osama get him to rile them all up, they do some evil shit, we get to respond with a thousand times the force, and put in a base and an oil pipeline while we're there.

LOL... oh shit, this just became a General board rant, my bad!  all is well tho!

i wouldnt have thought a 6 hour plane trip was a long one?...long enough to mess with your balance...

i travel OS regularly and am always dehydrated and tired when arriving. keep up the water (although that means getting up to go to the toilet all the time) and walk around.

also work in some form of bodyclock adjustment. I have a feeling that that may be the biggest issue here.

you've got to transition the change in time zone, not sleep or stay awak through it all in one hit. You can't makeup sleep.

So best to be in advance of it, and have a strategy to make the transition as gradual as possible.

i try to adjust my local bodyclock by an hour or 2  a day for 3 days prior to leaving, then arrive and expect my clock to be about 3-6 hours off...that can be made up within 3 days a the same 1-2 hour/day strategy,

This works perfectly as 12 hours enables eitherway synchronisation of the world's timezones- it is the worst case scenario.

remember that 16 hours behind is actually 8 hours ahead but yesterday...so you design to adjust for the 8 hour bit and just forget a day.

disco_stu : thanx bro, yeah 6hrs flight is not really long one but can do a damage some times and to me i have to be more careful when it comes to standing next to BIG names on the stage ( LEE PRIEST, RODNEY st. Could, Andreas Frey,Zoltan) these guys going to come 110% ready and its not that easy to keep up with them with any mistake, thats why i want to find the perfect way on keeping my shape, lines and size till the show.. Seriously, to Rob's point, a big ass middle eastern dude, pacing the aisle of a plane looking all depleted and probably somewhat nervous, with shaved forearms might raise some suspicion. Why is that hard to understand or accept?.....If you're gonna get all pissed off, get pissed off at the regimes and terrorists that, through their actions, created this sort of scrutiny.....

I would just let the flight crew know that you are going to compete in a bodybuilding show and that you have to spend some time walking the asile during the flight.

actually all sensitivities aside, the fact that a big dude who may appear intimidating to some, walking the aisles i reckon, is pretty funny.

you should give out some nasty stares too i reckon....just for laughs.
