everyone likes to bring up the 315 lbs bent over row... but when I say I do it like Dorian , you get the ..oh the Super Shrug..... or something to that effect...... So I put up a pic of some skinny dude doing the so-called "pure" way ...versus Dorian "Top 3 Backs of All Time" Yates doing it in a more upright position ....
-
I tend to do mine more Dorian-like.

Both versions are "correct", if they stimulate the muscles in the back. The "fitness" guy is doing them the traditional way. Why are you implying that he's doing something wrong, other than the fact that he's smaller than Yates? Lee Haney did rows in the traditional manner. It's fairly safe to say that his back was well-developed.

Jae, I would OWN YOUR ASS on back movements. Period, end of discussion. When comparing movement to bodyweight I'd have you UNDER the damn weight bench. I guarun-damn-tee you that you couldn't TOUCH ME on back when it comes to bodyweight vs. exercise. I would flat out OWN your ASS if you want to break down percentage...and I lift by myself to not get HURT and avoid things that others rely on.
Bring it, punk. Bring the numbers.

Ideal is to stand about 70 degrees as Dorian does. This allows you to place a greater load on your back. However, I do not prefer the underhand grip. Underhand is also more likely to result in a bicep tear.

There is no ideal. The Yates style allows more weight to be used, because the lats are under stress for less of the ROM, but the main thing is to do the version that which hits the lats effectively, without hurting the lower back.

The first picture is plain wrong,
why?
There's to much pressure on the lower back, just check out the natural curve of a back, and the structure of the vertebrae , if you bend over, certain vertebrae will be under to much pressure. It's better to use a bench if you want to go flat.
If you do them standing, dorian-yates style is better, a certain degree must be maintained to prevent hernia.
It's safe to say that the first picter isn't a very effective exercise to perform cause there are better alternatives, a regular bench with a barbell is better.

BB rows are my favorite exercise. I have the best luck with an angle somewhat in the middle. Not parralel to the floor, but not as upright as Yates either.I like both grips, however I feel it in the lats much better with an overhand grip. For me,that grip makes it easier to use my hands as hooks,if you follow what I mean by that. I get a deeper stretch and rom with the underhand grip, but use too much arms in comparison to the overhand.Whatever works best for the individual is the way it should be done.

This is my own experience, that underhand hits the bis too much, whether rowing or doing chins/pulldowns. The best grip of all IMO is neutral palms facing in grip, which is part of why i prefer T-bar rows, along with the fact that it's also easier on the lower back.

that which hits the lats effectively, without hurting the lower back.
most important thing to consider in this exercise! I perform them just like i do my t-bars, where i stand up enough that my lowerback is out of the equation and I can really focus on my lats instead of worrying about when my lower back will give out!

what's with the anger? Calm down, your gonna blow a gasket or something.

I myself feel that both versions of hand grips for bent over rows are beneficial & each give a diferent feel to the exercise. The biggest mistake I see ppl. doing in the execution of this exercise is bringing the bar up to their chest level while performing it.Great if you want to work your rear delts but for back you have to pull into your abdominal region.
-
both. they will hit different parts of the back and allow you to contract it different ways.

I would say in between Dorian's and fitness guys. Have your back at a 45 degree angle. Alternate between grips each workout
