Title: Greatest General in history???
Post by: JOHN MATRIX on October 27, 2006, 08:44:50 PM
after watching gettysburg i wondered who was the best of all time.

Lee?
grant?
alexander the great?
Patton?
Rommel(field marshal i know)
ghengis khan?
Napoleon?
Guderian?
Manstein?
Zhukov?
Hannibal?
perhaps some roman or greek fellow?
someone else?

remember its not just how much they did, its how much they did with what they had, and their relative postitions counted as well; for example, lee did not conquer any territory, while napoleon had most of europe. however, what if their positions had been switched? would they still have been as effective in each other's places?

no caesar, suvorov, kutuzov, or nelson (yeah, I know he was an admiral . . .  and your list is decidedly light on English warriors) ? what about the saladins et al?

oh well, I'm sure the great suckmy will be along shortly and inform us about exactly who the greatest general in history was.

Greatest?

damn...there's alot.

Most recent probably Swartzkoff

don't see George Washington on there...but he may be considered more of folklore.

I don't see General Douglas MacArthur on that list either

I could be here all night naming names

what're the criteria?

if you want a winning machine, you'd be hard pressed to beat Caesar, Nelson, Genghis Khan . . .

If you want someone who impacted the world in a massive way: Caesar, Napoleon, Alexander, and even Washington.

Caesar, because he conquered Gaul with an army of 50,000 men, going against 500,000 Celtic Gauls. Now that is what I call an effective resource management. :o What could you expect from a man with an I.Q of 178 - estimate made by the British psychologist, Hans Eysenck. ;)
