It's just info on a site, to see who owns the site technical contact details, etc.
In some cases it's used to determine that the site you order goods from is in good standing or actually exists if they have a SSL.

It's ACTUALLY a federal crime to provide false WHOIS information!

As I said before, it is possible to pay for whois privacy but I'm not sure how effective it is. Anybody can look up details of any site. Generally bigger ones will be post office/company name based though.

Its why I've never posted links to anything hosted by myself - though my information is often purposely out of date :)

Anybody who puts false details also runs serious risk of finding it difficult to retrieve a domain should it be lost (and it does happen).
