You know, as I read this stupid grunting bullshit over and over...I find myself getting angrier at the fact that if it wasn't for "grunting Muscleheads", this stupid bitch manager wouldn't have a gym to manage...boycott that fuckin place...its unacceptable!
-
i'm sure i'll never go there.
-
i'm sure i'll never go there.
likewise. With the no grunting rule they shouldn't be in the business of lifting weights anyway.
-
absolutely, but what would be more effective is to write a sane email to Planet Fitness expressing your unhappiness with their policy and the gym manager. Tell them how the gym, one of the last bastions of masculiity, is becoming increasingly feminized by feminists and you will not stand for it. Throwing a male member out for grunting is male bashing plain and simple.
-
what a bunch of tits. cant even work out hard anymore at a gym? ::)
-
Hell yeah, boycott those clowns. No grunting, that's BS!
-
Nothing better than giving their competition your business.
-
with the 80 pound dumbell limit i wouldnt go there anyway..

I am not trying to back Planet Fitness or anything, but the gym is not set up for bodybuilders or powerlifters, nor do they advertise to influence them to join...From a management point-of-view, I have to tell you guys that bodybuilders and powerlifters make up less than 10% of the members that come to gyms...Hard core gyms are a dying breed in themselves...

exactly....
planet fitness is 2 steps above curves! would you go to curves and complain when they wouldnt let you work out? there is no need to "boycott" a gym like that.....most of us wouldnt use a pussy gym like that anyway.
do yourself a favor and dont worry so much about it. planet fitness markets to people that you wouldnt want in YOUR gym....the people that get in your way....the dilly dalliers, the book readers, the people that bench press 100lbs for 20 minutes on your favorite bench, etc. planet fitness does us all a favor by giving these people a place to workout.
complain all you want...but would you rather have those people in your gym...or that lady managing your club?
let it go guys.....
-
This might throw all you guys for a loop lol.....but Mike Katz even owns a few of them...Thats right the old pumping iron ironager owns Planet Fitness...He doesn't workout there though...He does realize that it is a business and a very successful one at that...You got to look at the bigger picture here guys lol....
-
Jaggy, I know, but places like these are making the other gyms close and lessening options for people.
110% support the boycott!
-
Let's torch that fucking gym and tar and feather that bastard manager. And while we're doing it, we grunt and snort all over the place!!
-

Its called business lol...If there was a sudden surge of bodybuilders and powerlifters than places like planet fitness would go down hill...The sad fact is that planet fitness appeals to the majority guys...No one forces you to go to these gyms, plus owning and operating a gym to stay in the black is a tough task trust me...Again I state that bodybuilders and powerlifters are such a small percentage of most gyms that it doesn't make good business sense to market towards them...
-
I hear ya and I understand everything is ran by market forces and respect that you were in a position of knowledge....but when a company goes too far with rules and restrictions that affects a large amount of people, there needs to be backlash! What happened to that corrections officer is just not reasonable and as long as he wasn't violent or verbally assaulting to the manager, he should file a lawsuit!
-

Are you really serious lol???? Wow, I am not trying to cut you down, but if the rules of a private club of any kind are placed in plain view than that person has the right to file a lawsuit...LoL...But to even think about winning the lawsuit not a chance lol...Plus how do their rules affect a large amount of people??? With what your saying, people should sue bars too for not letting people under 21 in them...You have to think of the bigger picture here...I wish the best for the corrections officer if he persues a lawsuit, because I have actually watched others try the same thing and just waste alot of their own money on set in stone rules of a private club lol...This is amazing that you guys are getting so worked up about this lol....

According to this Associated Press article, they expel someone about every 2 weeks for grunting or dropping weights -interpreted by Planet Fitness as "trying to show how strong you are"..
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Some gyms forbid hogging machines and or wearing flip flops. At one gym, grunting is grounds for expulsion. Albert Argibay of Beacon, N.Y. was escorted by police officers from a gym this week for grunting _ which is against Planet Fitness' rules for maintaining a non-intimidating atmosphere.
Its rules, posted around the gym, state members cannot wear bandanas, grunt or bang weights on the ground. When an offender is spotted, a "lunk alarm" sounds to warn the member.
Across its locations nationwide, there is at least one expulsion every two weeks, said Mike Grondahl, CEO of Planet Fitness. He said grunting and dropping weights are the most common offenses.
"When somebody's in there and they grunt and they grunt loud, it's trying to bring attention to themselves to show everyone how strong they are," Grondahl said.
Argibay emitted the offending grunt Monday evening, a peak time for gyms, said Carol Palazzolo, the gym's general manager. She said she heard it from across the room, even though "the place was a zoo."
"He was looking directly at me and he did it four times," she said. "I'm not a doctor, but as far as I know, a grunt is a noise that comes out of one's body that is loud and is intimidating."
An argument ensued when she confronted him, and the police were called. Argibay was escorted out, but no charges were filed.
"It's an embarrassing situation to be in, over a grunt," Argibay said.
Most clubs have policies regarding proper gym manners, although expulsions are rare, said Brooke Correia, spokeswoman for the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association.
Grunting might be more taboo in gyms like Planet Fitness, which cater to exercise novices, Correia said.
The heaviest dumb bells at Planet Fitness are 80 pounds, meaning it's a place geared toward the general public, Palazzolo said.
She didn't know if Argibay was a chronic offender _ he'd only been a member since Sept. 27. But it was the first time she kicked a member out for grunting.
"I don't know the reason behind grunting or not grunting. But if you need to grunt, you may go and join another gym," she said.

bitch deserves a roundhouse :D
-
these places do provide an economical solution for some.
Can't you work out hard without grunting? I know I can.
But worse would be about 100 people on cardiovascular machines stairing at you while you lifted weights. They have the cardiovascular machines all lined up looking down on the weight pit. You would definately feel judged in this non judgement zone place.

i used to train at a 24hr fitness that had a mngr like this... he would constantly tell bigger guys to not slam the weights, yet when little guys did it he said nothing. making bigger guys follow all the rules of the gym, yet other people constantly broke them and would say nothing. i found out the truth that he himself took heavy cycles yet had piss poor genetics and was small. so it all stemmed to the fact that he wanted to get big but couldn't so he hated on the bigger guys.

In future speak to whomever he or someone else like this reports to.
-
Just saw the story on our local news channel. The guy is definitley a lifter, ha ha. The gym manager was interviewed and she was such a whiner. This definitely is not a gym for serious weight trainers, as others have said on this thread. I wonder why they have free weights at all?
-

Very true. Not exactly appealing having 20 slobs staring at ya.

Mike Katz hasn't lifted since about 1981. He is a smart and rich man. He and his partner Jerry are loaded.
-
How many on this board ever worked out at a Planet Fitness? You may find 2-3. It's not a place for the serious lifter. You sign up there- you better read the rules.
-

I would grunt and shoot a nice load on her.............

I don't know the story behind that but I commend the manager for kicking out the grunting wonder.
-
So to those that support the Planet Fitness arguement, what if its the only gym you can afford or go to? Then what? You lift light like the rest of the douche bags? What happens when you lift lighter, go high intensity and accidently let out a grunt, or a noise, or a peep...then they kick you out anyways?
I'm still for the boycott. And if anyone says then just don't go there...that's the point. We won't. However they still need to realize, if it wasn't for the grunting meatheads, there would be no gym industry and no way for planet fitness to take your money every month!
-

Actually its not the muscleheads that give planet fitness its money, its the hundreds of fatties who buy memberships and then never use them.

last weeks argument..but ill retort for the hell of it.
just because it would be the only gym you can afford, doesnt mean the facility needs to conform to standardized rituals and practices of "normal" gyms. ALL GYMS have rules and regulations for the comfort and safety of the MAJORITY. that is why there are different styles of gyms for people with different needs.
as far as "grunting meatheads" being the pivital point of the gym industry's existence, you are dead wrong. as stated before, bodybuilding is a niche market at best. gyms are built and run financially by overweight people, middle aged soccer moms, annoying aerobics people, etc.....ie: regular people, not competitors and meatheads. if you think differently, then it is obvious that you are not in the industry...and thats fine. i understand the backlash and "boycott" threads...personally i think planet fitness is gayer than richard simmons...but they have the RIGHT to make and set their own rules regardless if a few think its right or wrong.
-

so true
musclehead that goes everyday: membership cost....$200 a year
fat guy that only went 3 times a year:....membership cost...$200 a year
the only difference is that one takes up space, and needs to be cleaned up afterwards...actually costing money ie: paper towels, cleaners, toilet paper....
the argument makes no sense. the gym industry thrives on people who join and never show up.....and everyone should be happy about that. if everyone that was a member of their gyms actually showed up everydy to work out....they would quit and start a thread that said "my gym sucks...its too crowded......why do they let so many people join?...LOL
-
Of course, you could just have your own HOME GYM, like any DEDICATED, SERIOUS, weight-trainer should have(!), and then you can train 24/7 and not have to put up with this chicken-sh*t, bed-wetting, pansy-ass, "health-club" nonsense!!
And who needs spotters when you have power racks...why, in those f'ckin' health clubs I've found their that their dumb-ass PT's don't even know what a power rack is!??
Yeah, and in your own home gym you can grunt, scream, shout, fart...why, you druggies can even shoot-up between sets!
-
From another board:
"I went to a Planet Shittness last winter when I was home for Xmas (it was close and a friend had a free pass). Never heard of them before that. I'll NEVER go back.
I go in and do a workset of db laterals with the 70s (which btw their heaviest db's were 75s) and I hear this f-in siren go off like the place was getting raided. I was wondering what was going on so I look and see this beacon on the wall going off - the "lunk alarm". Under it was a definition: "Lunk: anyone who drops weights, grunts, or judges others" (or something stupid like that). Anyway - apparently I breathed too hard or something during my set.
This is discrimination. Some of these clubs are singling out people based on appearance and harassing them with this f'n alarm!
-
Looks like Planet Fitness just bought Joe Gold's WORLD GYM franchise. This is horrible. Believe it, they don't give a shit about building a good physique or physical fitness in any way. They will be changing World gyms to some degree now as well. Its all about $.
P.F. is not a small chain, if it were, this wouldn't be much of an issue....people that have a passion for building their physiques could just go elsewhere. But they are expanding rapidly across the country, buying out other gym chains to push their idea of economically driven passive restrictive fitness...and in some cases, descriminating on gym members based on looks.
People shouldn't be allowed to act intimidating or like assholes in other gyms either...but Planet fitness just goes way too far!
-
i don't know why some of you guys complain so much, this is America if you don't like that gym go find another one, i personally wouldn't want to go somewhere where i wasn't wanted, they're making it clear that they don't want the musclehead crowd so give someone else your money.
-

Planet Fitness has a smart biz plan. Sell memberships for 6 months, 1 year, or even 2 years and after 3 weeks the client stops coming. These members don't use the showers or cause wear on the equipement. This way a guy could sign up 5000 members and still have enought room to have a workout. Just think, what the hell would happen if all 5000 members showed up Sat. morning for a workout.
Real lifters do use the gym and will cause wear on the equipment.
-
Did you read my post?
The point is they are buying out other gyms and creating less options for people who want to workout elsewhere because of the size of the gym chain and possibly driving the cost up for the smaller gyms cause they loose out on people to planet fitness.
Absolutely, its a smart business plan but insulting to people who want to lift weights. I can understand wanting to create an environment for as many people as possible and removing the real idiots, but they are over the line with their bullshit rules whereas it affects many regular lifters too.
People that truely love physical fitness should encourage them to loosen their rules or support a boycott.

gimme a break, you make it sound like they're Wal-Mart or something, they're not that big, if you live in a place that has a decent population there are a lot of gyms to choose from.
-
There's not nearly as many choices in some regions man. 24hr fitness and Planet fitness are buying out so much. If you don't believe me, look at their websites and locations. Plus, do you want to be forced to join some small shithole gym that has minimal equipment? Gyms like Worlds, Powerhouse and Golds had great equipment for all focuses of training and allowed everyone to lift there. They even made it more mainstream and added to aerobics classes, trainers, and fitness classes for the beginners. But now World's has been bought out and I have heard 24hr fitness is buying a lot of Golds gyms too. Believe me, with the buyouts comes changes in philosophies, restrictions, equipment purchases, and programs.
As I posted above, they bought out the whole World Gym franchise, which was a serious lifter friendly gym!

true...
if you dont live within 20 miles of a golds gym.......MOVE OUT OF THE STICKS FOR CHRISTS SAKE!!!!

Want to hear something funny, our golds gym here also has a no grunt policy and dumbells only go up to 100's. It happening everywere! When I got shit for deadlifting a few months back all I said was sorry and told the owner he sould change his gyms name from Golds to curlves. And 2 weeks later I did it again! This time no one said anything.
So I have 2 gym memberships, one is hard core gym and other is for the eye candy for those lobg pre-contest cardio workouts!
As I posted above, they bought out the whole World Gym franchise, which was a serious lifter friendly gym!

That sucks man.
On Milos' board there are recent pictures of Troy Alves after a brutal leg workout. Talk about a difference in philosophies. The Koloseum is the shit!!!
