Its cruel, its mean... but everytime I watch the olympia comps and see him place behind #1 I laugh.
He's always saying "my destiny is the top of the olympia", "diamond in the rough", "full circle" and everyone knows he's full of himself.. so when I see his reaction when he's placed anything but first its hilarious.
He gave Dorian the blackest look at the 94 Mr O when he placed second.
Lee Priest would enjoy it I know. Anyone else?
-
True with either guy. ;D
-
From his perspective (that being aesthetics) he clearly was the winner.
-
to say ray got beat by dorian in 94 is ...?????....ray had THE ultimate body...he IS the standard....
-
Could have been worse but I did alright considering I was 5'7 215lb ;D
-
Remember though, according to Kamali, placing 2nd at the Mr Olympia means nothing...cause you didn't win ::)
-
Success (not just onstage) is the best revenge, Shawn. That pic shows you've done well. ;)
-
In a Subjective Sport like BBing, there can be only ONE.
That being said, not winning onstage never defined me as a person as this sport is just as much of a business as Pro Skate Boarding is.
How else do you think we can travel the world, attain mulitiple sponsors, sell our products and make appearances?
After a while it is All about the Benji's, then when you look back and realize everything was not in vain and there are a gazillion people trying to get where I was but only 11 actually made it in 42 years of trying.
Close does suck but it paid well in more ways than one. ;D
-
Did I mention:
The 2nd Annual IFBB/NPC Shawn Ray Colorado Pro Am Classic is coming soon!
;D

NarcassisticDeity would enjoy seeing Shawn not win.
But then again, he has down syndrome.

during the final comparisions (just before the posedown) at the 1995 Mr Olympia, shawn was standing next to Dorian. The judges then asked Nasser to stand between Dorian and Shawn. Judging be the look on his face, Shawn knew at that moment that he wouldnt win. That was the first time I had seen Shawn show a second of doubt on stage. (Yates looked like he was worried for a second too) Shawn moved up a place every year from 1991 to 1994. 5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd....and he predicted victory in 1995. He had pissed off Yates with some of the precontest talk. Shawn ended up in 4th place. Before the show, Nobody expected Nasser to be top 3.
Nasser knew how dissapointed Shawn was and apologized to Shawn for placing ahead of him.
Yates later said that he had Shawn placing ahead of Nasser.

No I took greater pleasure in Ronnie being beat in 2001/2002/2006 lol

I think Shawn Gold Ray was somewhat of an idiot.
He never figured out that he had to "train" at Steve Weinburger and Bev Francis for a couple of weeks before the Olympia every year.

Yates also said that every time Shawn stepped onstage the crowd would constanly boo , and Yates wasn't worried about placing 2nd in 1995.

Does the risks justify the reward?
I hope in the future, a 15th place will be rewarded for his efforts and expenses

Steve was buddies with Haney and Yates during both of their reigns. Haney even had Steve on his workout show.
-
Shawn, I respect you however you are a tad full of yourself, and mouthy. It wouldnt be funny at all if you werent inclined as such

I think Ray and Yates were shocked that Nasser came out of no where and was getting compared with them.....and had the crowd behind him!

I must have been about as smart as Gapari, Labrada, Levrone & Wheeler which makes me Stupid I guess? :-[
The end results were, is and always have been out of control of the Athletes.
I understood the Business and the Politics of the sport that didn't mean I didn't believe EVERYTIME I stepped on stage I would not be Victorious.
My battle was waged in the gym and against myself, the War was fought onstage against the competition.
The Judges decided the outcome but trust me when I say, when the dust settled the Fans of the sport have the last say as do the Sponsors which rewarded my accomplishments handsomely as they did the other "Close but not Good Enough Guys" mentioned above.

if Franco Columbu could win the Olympia, so could Shawn ;)
-
Shawn did you ever beat Gary Strydom onstage? Where would he have placed in 1991 and 1992 if he was not in the WBF but on the Olympia stage? Thanks
-
Just make sure the CoPro never becomes a joke like Mr O has been ever since Samir won it.

Shawn like Lee Labrada were early 80s throw backs , they were simply in the sport the wrong era and guys like this would have flurished in the 1970s early 1980s
Samir Bannout was the last Mr Olympia winner under 200lbs when he won in Munich he was 188lbs , the next year a 230lb Lee Haney replaced Samir and towards the end of his reign Haney was 250lbs , Yates won at 242lbs in 92 and finished at 270lbs , Ronnie won at 249lbs and finished ?? 285 in 05 and has been as high as 296lbs
Shawn was a excellent bodybuilder and did very well in the days of the giants , but make no mistake this is a big mans game , back in the days you had two types of bodybuilders small & ripped and big & realitively soft , with the advent of better chemicals it became possible for big guys to be extremely ripped and the small guys fell by the way side.

Yea, Gary and I went head to head in the 90 Pro Ironman,'He finished in 4th behind Marsh, Comerford and Ashely.
It was my 1st pro Win.
Gary would have faired well in 91 and 92 but his back was still going to hold him back as well as his presentation.
He certainly looked better against lesser competion in the WBF and looks incredible now for his age.
It's true, Labrada and myself missed the end of an era regarding smaller guys but the money was better for us in our era inspite of not winning the big one, we lived soley off the sport while the same cannot be said for our predecessors.
We rolled with the punches and regret nothing.
I fought for a steady rotation of judges to get different people picking the winner based on what different judges liked, sadly it never happend to my satisfation under the heavy hand of Wayne DeMilia.
Hence, 5'11 and 250lbs plus Winners for the last 22 yrs :-\

Always looking for someone else to blame? Just face it, the nightmares will probably subside - in time.. When you realise that you weren't good enough.

Shawn Ray had the muscle maturity of a 35 year old @ 21 years old. Just dig back some pics and you'll see what Im taking about. He was way ahead of the IFBB development curve. At 22 or 23 he was already a Ironman and Arnold champ, Weiders had no idea what to do. Come to the Arnold Classic and Shawn magically test postive for winstrol. Right. That was the end for him, unbelievable phyisque.
