The Massachusetts race for Governor was between the Republican Kerry Healey and the Democrat Deval Patrick.
Healey is the Lt. Governor under Mitt Romney and she ran a negative campaign against Patrick. She lost the race and I think one of the major reasons was her campaign strategy. It was classless and offensive to many people even those who supported her.
The question stands, do negative campaigns work? I realize this is a generalized question and that every race is different but in general do they work?

I don't think they have a monster effect. Most people vote along the party lines, making changes only when an issue really pisses them off (like iraq)

I would bet for the most part you are correct. Lincoln Chafee a Republican Senator from Rhode Island ran a somewhat negative campaign against his Democrat rival Sheldon Whitehouse and I don't think it negatively effected him.
Chafee also separated himself from Bush in the campaign. He ran ads saying he didn't agree with the war and that he voted against it. I thought that was an interesting strategy for a Republican.

The Republican party ran negative ads against Harold Ford Jr. and they seemed to work!

Of course they work. That's why they are used in every single election.

How's that whole campaign of yours to ban sexual activity for anyone under the age of 30 that isn't married working out for you? Are you meeting a lot of resistance?

Like most forms of advertising, they work! Bah!
Doom disapproves.

True, but a ballance of power between liars is better than liars with absolute power....

True. Maybe if both sides lie the truth is somewhere in the middle.
