A guy at a gym local to me died after he finished doing dumbell bench presses - I only heard about it cos it was in the local paper.

The only time bodybuilding gets in the mainstream press is when something negative happens.

In truth weight training helps your health strengthens the muscle around the heart, also helps blood flow.Death occurs because of pre-existing health problems..so many doctors tell people to walk and train with weights for rehab
the problem is some have no clue how to train and they over due it..

None of those people died because of lifting, they just died while lifting.Saying that them lifting had something to do with it is just ridiculous.

If there ever was a totally USELESS exercise, it is the decline BB/DB bench press!!  Don't you dumb-fvcks realize that all those big pec. muscles are merely going to SAG when you get older?!  Declines, of course, build the lower pecs and what male needs more lower pec development!??  Ideally, do inclines and flat benches and leave it at that.

Training alone with inclines and flat BB bench presses are no problem in dumping the bar if you "get stuck".  On flat bench, w/o a power rack available, I would just drop one end of the bar io the floor (relieving half the load), roll the bar down my waist, and then sit up...a little uncomfortable, but always a SAFE way to get out from under the bar!

How could anyone be so stupid as to roll the bar in a BB flat bench toward their neck in an effort to get out from under it!??  But there have been several reported "gym deaths" as the result of doing just this!

But someone would really have to not be playing with a full deck by trying to do decline BB bench presses with max. weights unassisted!  However, in the 1980's there was a TOP-LEVEL U.S.powerlifter who was found dead in the gym with a 440 lb. BB resting across his neck as the result of attempting to do un-assisted decline BB bench presses!  INSANE!!

Maybe it was the drugs, or possibly not knowing how weak his heart was, death came and it was strange how it shocked us...  :-\

Dying that young does have its advantages, though.

Some people just cannot accept the fact that you can't get out of this life alive!!

When I go though, I would like to have it be while either during sex, OR "gutting-out" a 20 rep. "breathing" squat with all I can handle...i.e. with a weight I thought I could barely make only 10 reps. with and then try to complete 20 reps. with the same poundage!

A month or two ago I was eating in a restaurant, and a guy a few tables over collapsed on the floor and started turning blue after a few minutes.  I later found out he had a brain aneurysm and died (true story).

The obvious implication of this, of course, is that people shouldn't eat in restaurants, or they might have brain aneurysms!  :o

I'm supprised that none of you mentioned the new multi million dollar business of selling defibrillators to gyms.  It's a hot thing to get into and if you have connections with gym owners, you might want to think of getting into selling them.  You don't just sell 1, you also have classes to teach all gym members how to use it.  Many advantages.  Not only could it save a life, but the insurance, which is in the thousands per year, goes way down and having a staff who know how to use it is a great selling point for new members.  Their HOT around larger citys, but their is a market for them in every gym.  I should sell them on the side.  Too bad Shadows gym didn't have 1.  In a short time they will probably be mandatory.

This is a really good point. I would think your chances of a "gym death" are about as good as getting struck by lighting, twice.

Hey NYCBULL, Now thats drawing a long bow without knowing all the facts?  He could have just simply had a heart attack. Regardless, yours was an informative post.

Cardiomyopathy or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the condition that Palumbo's friend Anthony D  and also Eric Otero died from, that condition is about 1 in a 100. Most people can get diagnosed by a simple medical (usually picked up by a heart murmur) exam.. If caught early enough their cardiologist can treat the condition and in some cases the condition is reversable.
