who is charles post pics
Trains at Pivitol Fitness in Greenville,SC. Yes, it should have went to him but the same thing happenned once again just like last year. Name recognition. However, I'd suspect that he'll get the Capriese treatment now. This is his second runner-up finish at the NPC Nationals. I think MD will be giving him a call soon
-
thanks vince..Id have to see comparison shots but I like charles over stan..but congrats to stan none the less

Your overall 2006 Nationals champion is...
...about to be announced. We are going through the mandatory poses right now, and then they will pose down.
Stan and Lionel are top-flight bodybuilders, but if Desmond doesn't take this title, we need to ask for a recount. And not a Florida-style recount either.
The winner is Desmond Miller. No recount necessary.

Men's Nationals Super Heavyweight Finals
Based on callouts yesterday, this class is between Desmond Miller and Evan Centopani. We'll see who comes out on top after the top five pose.
First up, Jerome Ferguson. He's promised not to do his "Who Let The Dogs Out" routine ... let's see if he sticks to it.
So far, so good...
Nope, didn't do it. Oddly, I actually missed it. Maybe next time.
Second up is Desmond Miller. He was fourth in this class at last year's Nationals, and won the 2005 Eastern USAs. Honestly, give this guy the overall now. He's that good.
24 year old Evan Centopani is up. Lots of potential in this kid, who's competing in only his third NPC show. He was the overall champ at this year's Jr. Nationals, and also won the 2005 Atlantic States overall title. His arms are ridiculous ... in a good way. Give him some more sizeable legs, and we'll see him in the pros.
Stokely Palmer, long-time competitor who turned promoter this year (the Atlantic City Pro), is in the top five. He's from West Orange, New Jersey, and should be a familiar name to anyone who's been following the sport for awhile. He's a veteran, and most recently finished fourth at the 2005 North American championships in this class. His conditioning is off from where it was yesterday.
Last finalist is Ben White from Albany, New York. Weighed in at 231.
The top five awards, presented by Ronnie Coleman, who just announced he indeed will compete at the 2007 Olympia.
5) Jerome Ferguson
4) Ben White
3) Stokely Palmer
2) Evan Centopani
1) Desmond Miller
Evan's going to be a force to reckon with in the future, but Desmond was way too damn good on this night.

Men's Nationals Heavyweight Finals
Top five posing routines.
First up is Randy Moore of Water Valley, Mississippi.
Second to pose, Shaun Crump of Cresco, Pennsylvania. He's using a ballad, but he does have the fluid, smooth moves to pull it off (unlike most bodybuilders who try to pose to slow music).
Third is Adorthus Cherry, he of the big arms and shoulders. He made a great run at this year's USA's, where he was third among heavyweights. Could have the best shoulders in the show.
Lionel Brown is up.He was second at the 2006 USA's in this class, and fourth at the 2005 USAs. He's been knocking at the pro door, and now wants to finally break through. The judging is over (unless they re-open), but Brown isn't quite on his game conditioning-wise tonight.
DeShaun Grimez rounds out the top five. From Lake Forest, California, he weighed in at 225, right at the upper limit of this class.
Top five awards:
5) DeShaun Grimez
4) Shaun Crump
3) Randy Moore
2) Adorthus Cherry
1) Lionel Brown
If it was judged tonight and not last night, Cherry would have probably won this class. Congratulations to Lionel, who's been fighting long and hard for the pro card, and now finally has it.

Men's Nationals Light-Heavyweight Finals
The best class of this year's Nationals is now up. This should be a tough fight, and precontest favorite Stan McQuay, while in the top three, may not find himself in first at the end of the proceedings.
First finalist from Canoga Park, California, McQuay. In 2002, he was first in the middleweight class at the USAs.
Next is Kert McLean from Brooklyn. He was the 2003 Eastern USA overall champion. A stellar physique.
Third up is Charles Dixon, who was a disappointing ninth at this year's USA's back in July. He's much improved here. He weighed in at 198 1/4, at the very upper limit of this class. One cheeseburger and he would've been a heavyweight.
Fourth to pose is Michael Yablon of New York, giving up 10 pounds to Dixon at 188. To make the top five in this class is an accomplishment, as it was deep with quality 1-10.
TJ Hewitt rounds out the group.
Top 5 Winners were:
5) Michael Yablon
4) TJ Hewitt
3) Kert McLean
2) Charles Dixon
1) Stan McQuay
McQuay has an undeniably great physique but Dixon could have easily won this class, the crowd was deeply divided on this result.

Men's Nationals Middleweight Finals
The top five middleweights are doing routines. First up is Garrett Allin from Las Vegas.
Next is Darron Glenn from Gastonia, North Carolina. Both Glenn and Allin have noteworthy arms. From the front Glenn has a very proportional and solid upper body.
Todd Scott from Moses Lake, Washington is third to pose. There's no truth to the rumor that Moses Lake is split down the middle. (Yes, that one was a major reach. Hey, you try blogging a four hour show...)
Anthony Watkins of Chicago, Illinois is now on stage.
Kevin Creeden from Alaska rounds out the top five. He's the lightest of the top five, at 168 pounds in a class that ranges from 165 to 176. That may not matter, though, as he has the package to win this class.
Top 5:
5) Kevin Creeden ... so lightest of the group was last.
4) Todd Scott
3) Anthony Watkins
2) Darron Glenn
1) Garrett Allin from Las Vegas, 41 years old, is your middleweight champion.

Nationals Fitness Awards
Women's Fitness Short Class Top five:
5) April Wintle
4) Ozzie Jacobs
3) Maggie Blanchard
2) Michelle Theison
1) Nicole Duncan
The top two in each fitness class turn pro. The practice of giving out pro cards to the top two in each class was presumably started to stock the pond with pro competitors back when they started the sport in the mid-90s, but now it seems like overkill with such a dearth of pro shows to compete in. If only the class winners in bodybuilding get pro cards, it should be same in Fitness and Figure.
Medium Class
5) ShaNay Norvell of Atlanta
4) Tina Durkin
3) Colleen Baldwin of Austin, Texas
2) Angela English of Baton Rouge, Louisiana
1) Amy villa Nelson of Brooklyn
Tall Class
5) Nicole Wilkins
4) Sandy Stewart
3) Michelle Mayberry
2) Mandy Polk
1) Liza Hughes
They are judging the three class winners to decide the overall...
The overall champ of the 2006 NPC Nationals is Amy Villa Nelson, the medium-class champ.

good for stan......He deserves it. He Looked sick!
Are you serious? No one...NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON THAT KNOWS BODYBUILDING could say that was fair. the charles guy got ripped off and bodybuilding judging once again proves to be a complete joke! At least the super guy won because he also was light years ahead of the next guy.
-
good for stan......He deserves it. He Looked sick!
Bodybuilding is once again a Big Joke.
-
I guess it comes down to subjectiveness.......... ...and many of us have the "opinion" that the judges are idiots.
The winner of the middles, Allin is 41 years old.
5th place in middles was Kevin Creeden....who is 44!
4th place in middles was Todd Scott....who is 38.
-
Maybe Charles took second cause Vince has made it clear they are good friends and trained together. The IFBB surely doesn't want to be associated with Vince ;D

TJ Hewitt, 4th light heavy is 53...and has steadily improved over the past ten years and shows NO signs of aging, except more muscle maturity. I like Tj alot and I'm happy for him. he's worked very hard over many years, but I had Mike Yablon 4th at the least.

No he doesn't. Not by a longshot.

good job stan

bullshit
Stan was too light to fight, too thin to win
he should have got the 3rd place

HHHHHMMMMMMMMMMMMM??????????????????
that fucker is 5'3!!! It's a conspiracy the IFBB hates pygmies just ask Lee
-
that fucker is 5'3!!! It's a conspiracy the IFBB hates pygmies just ask Lee
Fuller muscle bellies don't automatically mean victory. We have to BE THERE to really judge
McQuay & Charles. Stan's physique "Flows" much better. Stan is excellent at presentation, while the 2nd place guy's posing was mediocre. Stan could have used a little more color, pro-tan.
The judges most likely made the right call, they were there. There are too many "Conspiracy theorists" on Get Big. NPC & IFBB are NOT rigged or fixed at all..It is silly talk & sour grapes to go on & on about athletes getting screwed all the time. It was a close race for LHW. Charles Dixon had some flaws. Stan McQuay had the least flaws. His body was closest to perfect & he PRESENTED THAT to the judges perfectly.
-
Stan McQuay had the least flaws. His body was closest to perfect & he PRESENTED THAT to the judges perfectly.
Ahhhh, NOOOOO. Dude looked light as hell. Dixon, was cut to ribbons, bigger arms, legs, striations, better back. I guess trampstamps on guys work wonders. It makes others see things thing that aren't really there.
-
Stan McQuay is tiny... he looks like a starving african child compared to most other guys on stage... there's a pro card gone to waste!
-
LOL 5' 3" LOL
-

What did Cory Everson used to say ?
"Don't Grow it if you can't show it"
Charles has tons of muscle but cant pose. Reminds me of an early Coleman.
Ronnie couldnt pose well in his early years.
Stan's the man.
-
Fellas, relax. I'm sick on stan mcquay, just like all of you. The guy got a major gift! BUT SO DID WE. We are now RID OF HAVING TO WATCH STAN MCQUAY COMPETE AT THE AMATUER LEVEL!!!!! His ass will be clowned at any pro level show, he can't compete, so look at it as a blessing. Charles will get his dues, at the USA's.
-
For anyone who was actually there, it was as close as it gets between these two...
This was truly a "apples and oranges" type of comparison...reminded me of 1987 Nationals and trying to pick a winner between Shawn Ray and Phil Hill, two very different physiques.
There was a choice to be made...Stan was given the nod with a better flow, better presentation of physique, better symmetry and proportion, it was certainly no "gift"...
On another given day, with a different panel, perhaps they go with the thicker muscle, etc.
Dixon is a damn good bodybuilder, and will have his day with a little polish.
The post by "Jammer" in this thread sums it up quite well...
-
No he doesn't. Not by a longshot.
You're having a laugh, you can't even afford trunks that fit ::)

Yeah right!!!! Give it a break. Stan has NO LEGS...yes you read that right, NO LEGS and his hams are soft...nationals winner...I can find state level guys with better legs...EASY...he is paper thin from the side and if you were actually there(I know you were because you were basically in the same row as me at pre judg ight heavy class) than you saw he was paper thin. his arms are un naturally shaped and not at all dense (no striations in tri), torso is good, back has separation but not enough muscle, shoulders un naturally round and legs look like a state level guy at best. It really is too bad that Stan is getting all these HONEST critiques because he is a good bodybuilder, but NOT the true winner of that class....and it was plainly and easily obvious to anyone there......Bob, yu are a good bodybuilder, even though you over did the synthol, so try to keep any credibility you have by recanting this ridiculous statement. In this case, the pix actually make Stan appear better than he is...believe me that's the truth.
-
see...you had a decent rebuttal going until you made the "synthol" comment, now I know you have no clue what you're talking about.
Anyone who would look at my physique and think I ever used synthol, or anything remotely like it...doesn't know Bodybuilding.
BTW...I could come up with just as many critiques for Dixon.
-
mcquay is good ,but look at past lightheavies, johnnie jackson, dugdale, were dense and conditioned,he would have had a tough time with those guy's,but he was jugded and that is the outcome,he is deserving no doubt ,but that class had 5 good guy's .
-
I know you can come up with just as many crtiques for Dixon. he aint perfect, but was easily better than Stan and I do not think that you truely feel he was either. You've been around too long and accomplished too much to be that poor of a judge. I will go so far as to say that NOT ONE IFBB TOP TEN PRO that was at the show and is not a friend of Stans will say that he should have won that class.
-
mcquay is good ,but look at past lightheavies, johnnie jackson, dugdale, were dense and conditioned,he would have had a tough time with those guy's,but he was jugded and that is the outcome,he is deserving no doubt ,but that class had 5 good guy's .
And to me that is the unfortunate thing about the outcome. If Stan had come in second many, including myself, would mention how terrific he looked and the improvements he's made, but in this case I can't.
-
As I said...It came down to a preference. Both had their strong points and weak points. Stan had command of his poses and displayed his physique better. Stan looked polished, Dixon looked more like an amateur in his posing and his ability to show his physique...
-
and that's the flip side ,u would have said he did great to finish second, then have to wait a whole year to see if he could pull a first,we all know in bbing a year either make's or break's ya,could have improved or passed by dixon or another guy, this was a let's get it done year or else.
-
And to me that is the unfortunate thing about the outcome. If Stan had come in second many, including myself, would mention how terrific he looked and the improvements he's made, but in this case I can't.
Pleeeease..If Stan had come in second, everyone would be bitchin about how HE got screwed and how the more symmetrical physique should win over a guy with more muscle, etc, etc.....
-
That's very accurate, his posing is way off. I for one wish that it meant as much as it did when I first competed in the 80's and when you competed, but it doesn't as is evident by Ronnie colemans Mr. O success, regardless of his poor posing. Powerful posing and presentation is a lost art and as you saw saturday night, has not made a comeback....but your saying it should count in Stan's case? I disagree.
-
You're talking about aa posing routine..which accounts for 0 at the amateur level..I'm talking about DISPLAYING the physique, and the ability to have command of the mandatories...Stan did both better.
Dixon had more muscle, but looked ackward in presenting it....which DOES have an impact on how the physique comes across to the judges.
The INability to display the better physique takes the advantage out of having more muscular physique, and levels the playing field for the other guy with less muscle...it also brings out the weaknesses/ flaws.
I think If Dixon had beter control of his physique, he beats Stan.
-
Pleeeease..If Stan had come in second, everyone would be bitchin about how HE got screwed and how the more symmetrical physique should win over a guy with more muscle, etc, etc.....
THIS guy has heavyeight size and probably will leave that class, stan would have either way would have to grow to the class limit, but hit it in first try at this class,he's worthy but that guy just on first look, has pro size .i wasn't their so i can't be totally right.
-
haha, alright I understand your view and think that your opinion has to be jaded, either by your position or your personal relationship with stan, none of which i know nothing about so I'll leave it at this. An interesting poll would be to show each of the mandatories to all the top bodybuilders in the game today and the Mr.O's of the past and have them simply give their opinion (Stan or Charles). I think that , if they did NOT have to put their name to it you would get a 99% vote in favor of Charles.
-
This may or not have anything to do with the outcome ,but stan has the oppurtunity to display his physique in print more than dixon will ever .even if and when dixon turn's pro he still will never eclipse stan their,so stan has more of a chance to display his build because he is in the contest game longer than dixon.
-
Are you serious? No one...NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON THAT KNOWS BODYBUILDING could say that was fair. the charles guy got ripped off and bodybuilding judging once again proves to be a complete joke! At least the super guy won because he also was light years ahead of the next guy.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stan should not have taken first
-

I don't have a vested interest either way...and don't know either guy much at all personally. There are plenty of Pro's right here on this board...I'd be curious to know their respective opinions myself.
-
For what its worth..... My vote goes with Stan. I feel his physique was presented way better and I am more for the symmetrical look.
-
Chick, why does the ifbb insist on handing out pro cards to the lower weight classes (e.g. bantams) who mostly look like anorexic teenage girls? They get pro cards and are mostly never heard from again bcs they cant compete at the pro level. What a waste of pro cards...
Why not just eliminate those classes, tell the guys in them to go eat some eggs and steak so their contest weight goes up to, say, 185, then maybe give the extra pro cards to the second place superheavy and heavyweight. They deserve them alot more and would accomplish much more with a pro card.
Sorry if this is off-topic...
-
These guys know what the deal is, and for most of them...they have no grand illusions of beating Jay Cutler on stage.
For some, it's the pursuit of being the best, the best in their respective weight class...no different than a bantamweight or lightweight boxer.
-
But they are not bodybuilders! They haven't built anything! If you're over 5'4 and weigh under 155 on stage, don't go on stage, go to Outback and eat a massive steak.
Does the NBA allow midgets in just bcs they love to play basketball? Does the NFL allow cripples to play just bcs they wanna play pro football? Of course not. Why is bodybuilding any different?
Who wants to see some anorexic 115 pound dude on stage who looks like he came out of one of those Darfur commercials on tv? No one... We'd much rather see a dude like Evan Centopani get a pro card and compete!
Doesn't anyone else think this way too?
-
CONGRATS, STAN.
-

But a lightweight or batam boxer can make money.a smaller bber in those classes can not.5'4 batam in great shape is different than a 5'4 in shape and in the money league lee priest.i have respect for the lower classes too, those guy's have all the detail and shape and more than hold their own like marvin ward say.so i guess the prestige factor is their to be a national title holder.
-
The problem is that the contest isnt based on who will make a better pro, its based on which competitors name rings out in the mind of the deaf dumb and blind judges.
-

mugsy bogues, spud webb, earl boykins. Talent is talent.
-
Ok, It's all done with. Let's just wish Stan good luck in the Pro Ranks. This guy paid his dues. wish him luck on the next level. No hating
-
yes columbusdude, but stan is 5'3" not 5'4"
-
Please understand that I am not dissing Stan. Maybe I should have posted my question to Chick in this thread. But I think I make a good point and wonder if others agree...
-

What weight class do you compete in?
If you ever go see a national show, these guys look pretty good onstage. Granted, they are not mass freaks, but they train just as hard and diet just as hard. Steve Brisbois, MoMo, Labrada, Dean Tornebene all got pro cards in lighter classes and did ok.
-
I'm trying to make superheavyweight... To answer your point, yes there are well-known exceptions, but how many bantamweights who got pro cards have competed in the IFBB? And my point is even more valid in regional contests and non-pro-qualifiers like junior nats.
-
Well, according to Ed and Betty Pariso they will have a class for PROS who weigh under 210lbs to compete "They’ll also produce the IFBB Europa Pro Best Built Bodybuilder Under 210, to encourage men who came to the pros from the smaller weight classes to take off their sweats for a chance to actually win one. And, says Betty, “You will be able to compete again the next day at the Super Show.”
If you think about it, name the last Super Heavyweight to do damage in the Pros? Hell, most Super's don't even win the overall. I know locally, the Supers suck!! They are "big", but most are just fat. At least, that is what I have seen in Ohio for the past 3-4 years
-
Well I don't follow Ohio bodybuilding much, and know of only one superheavy around here... I am not saying everyone should weigh 230 on stage, but some dudes just mistake a bbing show for a miss anorexia pageant is all...
-
Legbreaker is right! I was there too! And Stan should have NOT won that class....PERIOD! Despite Dixon's lack of experienced posing, he clearly beat Stan from every angle. Stan still looked like a middleweight. He's got great abs but his front double bicep looked like a bantams. No thickness from the side, weak back.
To me, the whole class was fairly weak with the exception of a few that stood out. Look at the last few pro's that turned pro as a LHW. McQuay is NOT in their class. Dim, Jones, and Dugdale [true LHW's]. All were deserving winners and weighed at the top of the class. Stan was what....? 185 at best?. My point is dude, just didn't have the muscle to have won that class. The judges knew it, the crowd knew it and now he's just an infant among men.
-
yes columbusdude, but stan is 5'3" not 5'4"
That's more like Dixon!

sure! I wish people were clamoring for my nude shots on the internet. Stan's asian so maybe he's not hung so well, but that's ok by me!
-
Seriously man, do you think Stan is going to reply to this non sense.
-
mcquay has better shape than that guy
who gives a fuck about shape? stan was getting killed by second and 3rd place(yes i was there for both prejudging and finals). name recognition, wtf? stan did look good but to beat dixon, come on.
-
So, is Stan going to take a year off the gain some "size"? As Melvin Anthony said, if you do that, then that means that you're not ready to compete. I think he is going to end up like Charles Ray Arde, not being able to compete with the other guys, and just fade to G4P scene.
-

With fans like that creep Lestat, maybe Stan would think twice before doing anything remotely like G4P...
Remember, Lestat is "straight" and wants to ogle Stan's package...

Yeah Stan would look great in the nude! But I'd like to get a taste of Charles Ray Arde personally G4P even though he has a small thingy down there! ;D
-
Dude... I am no fan of Stan, but why can't people have some respect for Stan's dignity as a human being... I know that if I were a competitive bber, I sure as hell wouldn't want to have fans who speculate on what I look like in my birthday suit...

Poor Stan, his fan base is a bunch of perverted men.

I was there in the front row photographing for BodyBuilding.com as I always do. I also have the judging results sheets. And I can tell you it was really close between Stan and Charles. Each had very strong merits and the difference between the results could have come down to timing, an hours sleep more or a chicken breast. Sometimes that is just the way it is.
I interviewed Charles the next day. You can read it if you want at http://blog.bodybuilding.com/SecondFocus/ which was part of the Nationals coverage. You will read that Charles was pretty surprised at the outcome too and it is kind of funny. But the guy has the right attitude and will be coming back even better. Charles Dixon is really a good bodybuilder and a good guy.

With fans like that creep Lestat, maybe Stan would think twice before doing anything remotely like G4P...
Remember, Lestat is "straight" and wants to ogle Stan's package...
lestat to me is creepier than me. lol.

He would have placed out of the top ten at the Olympia. So what's the excitment all about ???

stan will win again you'll see.

I think any pro BB'er should have their pro card revoked if they're found to do G4P.

stan will win again you'll see.
being a fan is fine. But you honestly think stan can win a pro show?

ColumbusDude, BigMike, I think you both raise some very interesting questions about presenting Pro Cards to contest winners who will naturally be incapable of benefiting by their use.
I don't know if this is the answer but I think that it is definitely something that should be "thunk" about by the Rules Committee (if such a committee does in fact exist).
Here's my initial thought on this subject .....
Pro cards should not be given to each wt class winner in the Nationals.
Instead of presenting the Pro Cards to each weight class winner, those same Pro Cards should be presented to the top contestants in the contest regardless of bodywt.
In this way, a runner up in the heavier wt classes can obtain a card instead of the bantamwt winner who might not ever use it anyway.
I think that the USA almost does it right unless the runner up of one class is better than the winner of another.
I haven't "thunK' this one over deeply enough yet, but I think that you guys have raised an interesting question.
Once again, I could be Politically Incorrect but I find that being so is often the correct procedure.
I think that the decision makers and Bob should do some "thunking".

Good post... Evan Centopani deserved a pro card this year waaayyy more than some anorexic midget... who pays attention to bantamweights anyway?!
