Yes, the entire World gym franchise has been sold to an east coast franchise called Planet Fitness.
I find it hard to think that it was only within the last 50 years bodybuilders popularized working out. Now today the big business gyms are willing to turn thier back on the fore fathers in an instant.
I heard that a Planet Fitness member recently got banned from one of the clubs for deadlifting 405Ib which caused him to 'grunt'. The dumbells in Planet Fitness peak at 60Ib's.
I will be running a story on this in Kaged Muscle and will keep ypou updated as I hear more.
The Santa Monica gym could close as early as thanksgiving - lets hope not.

PS Was speaking with full time minister Aaron Baker yesterday - looking well. I will interview him shortly

Its true they want to make it family friendly, they want everyone to feel comfy cozy..They want the fat and skinny people to be secure when training ,they think the big guys scare them so theses people don't go to the gym. those are the people they are geared towards..
they will fail......

my friend owns a gym called flex appeal in westchester ny 2 floors 350 month all the same shit as a golds or power house there are alot of gyms out there better or just as good.........

Technically, there is no Santa Monica World gym, it's in Marina Del Rey... technically.
-
Planet Fitness is total garbage!
Any serious lifter wants no part of their philosophy.
They actually have a flashing alarm that sounds if weights hit the floor too hard.
I belonged to one right as they really started going downhill. Taking out the squat rack. Having dumbbells only up to 80. Legions of teenage and college-age punks crowding the entire gym.
Run as fast as you can from one of those gyms.
Their philosophy is to pack as many people as they can in, at a very low rate.
Luckily, I found a small, independent gym which has the basics and no crowd.

technically who cares its planet please dont make a sound or we will throw you out fitness.....next thing will be no muscle can be showing we dont want to upset out fat members ...

the best thing about planet fitness is they serve free pizza every monday
-
At the Gold's I worked at, the owners stressed to me that they are trying to do away with the Gold's "bodybuilding gym" and turn it into a more family friendly gym. It was all about getting more cash through the door. I thought it was crap.

I posted this story a week ago.

this is terrible news :( It was inevitable once Bob Gold died though.

well, it's hard to find any decent hardcore gym these days. There is a STATE OF THE ART gym that just opened in my area. They have every freaking machine you can think of, if you go to their weight room area, the heaviest dumbells is 90lbs ;D. but everybody in town love that gym, I was shocked cause they charge you $70 a month for basic membership. I'd rather do pushup for the rest of my life than to join these social clubs

changing the name on the front of the building is not the same as closing it.

Basic economics guys...nothing to worry about. As mega-corps buy each other out to create a homogenized "family" workout (haha, like anybody I know wants to workout with their family!) they will create a vacuum for serious "gymrats" who want something else from their workout. Supply and demand guys.
Once the demand is great enough guys like you or I will create the kind of gym we and others like us want. If the concept is popular enough we will open several gyms and grow across the country.
After a few years somebody like Planet Fitness will come by and offer us millions and millions of dollars for majority control of our little empire. We will of course accept it because its MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of dollars.
The guys who buy it will decide that to recoup their investment they need to up their memberships right away. They will look to the fattened american obese family with lots of discposable income and young single working women with insecurities and decide thats the market to grow in. They will feel the need to make the new prospects as comfortable as possible...they will then start tightening up on the "gymrats" and hardcore mentality folks (like us). We will get tired and complain that their arent anymore "hardcore" gyms left. We will leave and wander the desert in search of our new Mecca........
Supply and demand rears its ugly head again.

My home gym sounds better by the day (which I have officially named "The Construction Zone" complete with mock road sign). The rules:
1. Grunt and scream as needed (since no one can hear you);
2. Feel free to sweat all over the equipment (since no one else uses it);
3. No minimum time on the equipment;
4. Loud music of your choice entirely permitted; and
5. All profits go to equipment upgrades.
-
These family shit gyms are just that shit.Simple don't join them.I hope they all go Broke.
-
Gold's Gym is opened 24 hours. go off peak and do your worst!

Peak at 60lbs.!?!?!? Geezus, are you kidding me? Actually, at that gym, it shouldn't come as a surprise. ::)
You mean the World Gym in Marina del Rey is closing its doors? :'(
-
changing the name on the front of the building is not the same as closing it
No, they are actually closing it - the building has been sold. They may relocate to Glencoe avenue in M.D.R where the old Angel City Fitness was.
-

The Marina del ray building was definitely on the market...

I have some questions about this one....
World Gym is a franchise.
The Planet Fitness dudes can't have bought the entire chain because every gym is owned by different people so they can only have bought the name world gym (and maybe the flagship gym in MDR from mike uretz) and expect the gyms to change over to planet fitness.
The thing is... since they don't own these other world gyms what is gonna stop these other world gyms -some of which are massive setups totally different than the planet fitness business model - from simply dropping out of the franchise and going as a golds/powerhouse or simply being independant?
-
A World gym opened in my area about a year ago and it was a joke! They had minimal equipment and DBs up to 75lbs LOL The place closed down in less than a year and was bought by a local chain in this area.....they turned it into an express type gym, which is what it was anyhow at best.
Just cause it says World, Powerhouse or Golds does not mean its good or hardcore. Hardcore gyms are dead....no market, the best gyms find a balance. Besides hardcore comes from within, no gym can make you hardcore.
-

Planet Fitness bought the whole franchise...every gym. As part of the new franchise, the franchisees will be able to operate as World Gym. Planet fitness is essentially creating two divisions. However, should the World Gym Franchees seek to switch to a Planet Fitness franchise, they'll be allowed to do so.

My friends, the Montanari's owns a Gold's gym in New Haven, CT and they are hurting. Places like Planet Fitness are killing Gold's and World gym's in the northeast. The franchise fees are too steep.
-

Look no further.. I will never sell out to any cry baby members! "oh my, this music is too loud" "Oh dear, he said a bad word" I really hate THESE people.. Who cares if they make up a good percentage of the members.. If you don't like it, then go to "planet Fitness" My dumbbells go up to 375 pounds and you gotta grunt to lift them.. If you heard the loud music when you signed up then why are you complaining now..
-
So every single world gym owner agreed to sell their entire business to planet fitness?
That would be a logistical miracle...
-
I used to belong to the biggest Gold's in New England and the place sucked balls...packed to the brim, not enough equipment etc. etc.
Now I belong to world's and its the complete opposite. Not too many members for the size of the place, plenty of simple equipment (hammer strength, cybex and nautalus)...I hope it doesn't suck that bad if it changes ownership (i'm locked in for year!!)
-
Joe Gold opened World Gym partly to provide jobs for Zabo and some other mates of Joe. What are those fellas doing or are they mostly retired from working in that gym?
-

ask if they have sold out to the planet fitness owners...
still sounds like they have bought the world gym name and not every single world gym out there because that would cost many many millions and would be nearly impossible to organise - not like world gym can force their franchises to sell they can just drop out and change their names the way bev francis did with golds to powerhouse...

ZABO AND EDDIE GULLIANI STILL GO IN THERE AND A FEW OF THE OLD GROUP...ITS GOOD TO SEE THEY ALL LOOKED OUT FOR EACH OTHER AND STAYED FRIENDS UNLIKE TODAYS PROS
-
Telling you right now. Temple Gym is going to be the gym to go to. They have a great marketing plan and over 150 Golds Gyms have already submitted apps. I heard over 40 World Gym have also. We have 2 going up here immediately with 7 possible on the other islands.

Thanks, Lee. As you know Joe was a great guy and sponsored heaps of guys by letting them train in his gym for free. I have always respected Joe. Jimmy Jones invited me over to a Thankgiving dinner way back in 1968. I remember those acts of kindness to visitors to LA. Zabo said there was no pot of gold for bodybuilders at the end of the rainbow. Arnold made it and one or two others but most haven't made much. Joe told Arnold to do as he did and invest in property. Good advice.
Lee, what is going to happen to the Del Rey World Gym? What happened to that amazing collection of scales in the foyer? Seems to me someone should keep that club going.

dont steal the mans thunder max >:( hes omish and he has to sneak away to listen to the radio ;D
I also won't tell him that the story of the guy that got banned has been on every new channel as well as the internet. He was banned for squating 500 pounds NOT deadlifting 405. Planet Fitness does not allow deadlifting or t-bar rows.
-
I had an interesting conversation with a Powerhouse owner a few years back. He operates one of the more successful franchises in our area. Basically his ideal gym member is female and weights 100 lbs. She will use small dumbells. a little cardio and not sweat a lot. Contrast that with a 250 lbs guy that cracks the concrete floor everytime he deadlifts, is hard on all the equipment and sweats all over the floor.
Which member would you prefer as an owner?

women and gay dudes are what owners want... i've been helping out a gym like this recently with some equipment additions and they are doing very well.

I believe gyms can stay open as World's, but they have the opportunity to switch to Planet Fitness for a low fee right now. After a certain timeframe, I think the fee will go way up making it appealing to switch to Planet as soon as they can. The PF that opened here (former World's) has dumbells maxing out at 60lbs., no decline bench, a lunk alarm, very low monthly fees, and packed to the brim all day. Welcome to the future.
-

Godamnit, this story is getting me more pissed off, the more I read it. I hope this planet fitness file for bankrupcy soon. they don't deserve to be in that kind of business. Planet Fitness= a place for the AARP folks, the busy soccer moms, and to all the Girly man on this planet.
-
JOE WAS A GREAT GUY...STILL MISS HIM.AND HIS GREAT STORIES WE HAD ALOT OF GOOD TIMES...BUT I HAVE HIS DOG TO KEEP ME COMPANY AND DO CARDIO WITH.
Yes, he was a great guy. Did I ever go over there with you???? I can't remember.
-
I couldn't believe Zabo (Chief) and Eddie were still working at the gym. Unreal. That is dedication and friendship you won't see much. Joe was great. No matter what I will never forget how he would notice if I didn't train the day before. Of all the guys in the gym he would come up to me and ask me where I was and how come I wasn't in the gym. Maybe he did that to everyone but I still think it was cool that he did that. And it is sad what is happening to Golds and Worlds. Well i am Temple Gym now and I am going to help them kick some ass. If anyone out there who has a gym wants to convert to Temple check them out. Good people and Scott and Dorian have allot planned.

I would say they are doing you a favor by leaving out the decline bench, who uses those pieces of crap anyhow? No need to decline press, its a joke of a movement.

tryhards love the decline bench press because they can lift more weight due to the reduced range of movement.

Dorian Yates used decline presses as a staple of his chest workout.

This completely strengthens the Golds chain now. NOT Planet Fitness...
