Saddam trial 'flawed and unsound'

Court proceedings were marked
by frequent outbursts

The trial of Saddam Hussein was so flawed that its verdict is unsound, the advocacy group Human Rights Watch says.

The former Iraqi leader was sentenced to death on 5 November after being convicted of crimes against humanity.

But HRW said it had documented "serious administrative, procedural and substantive legal defects" that meant he did not get a fair trial.

The Iraqi government has dismissed the report, telling the BBC that the trial was both "just and fair".

Appeal controversy

Saddam Hussein has two more weeks to lodge an appeal against the verdict - but his lawyer claims he has been blocked from doing so.

Chief defence lawyer Khalil al-Dulaimi told the BBC his team had been prevented from filing appeal papers.
Under Iraqi law it must be done within a month of sentencing.

Its more of a trial than any of the thousands of people he  murdered ever got.

Yeah but we didn't care then so lets not pretend that we care now

sadaam deserves to die, absolutely.

but his trial was used to try to help repubs win elections. making the death sentence come out 24 hours before Americans hit the polls... I called that shit 5 weeks before election day.  Then Tony Snow laughed that anyone would even suggest that the US would in any way manipulate the timing of anything that goes on in Iraq for political purposes.

In case anyone hasn't noticed, terror reminders are spit at us at very intentional times to affect polls and political outcomes.  Tony Snow insulted our intelligence bigtime.  I turn off the tv when he's on now.

man, you are against anything a republican does.  why?  who cares when they announced his death sentence.  you can draw a correlation between anything if you look hard enough, doesn't mean it has any sustenance.  do you point out everytime a dem or liberal does things for political gain??

ps...we need to be reminded of terror, everyday.  it exists.  there are a lot of fanatical nuts out there that what to kill everyone in america.  we've been asleep at the wheel since this crap started in 1979 at the american embassy in iran.

to say it's spit at us for political gains is sad.    :'(
