Post by: the shadow on November 22, 2006, 05:13:29 AM
i would say the pecs..many pro bodybuilders career have ended cuz they tore pecs while benching heavy..notable victims are ernie taylor, kevin levrone, alex fedrov and the latest being markus ruhl..pec tears have resulted in retirements of alot pros too..ernie retired last year and kevin levrone till the end of his career was  troubled by his pec tear, alex federovs chest looks like its torn permanently..

all muscles tear in order to build up, but I would say chest and then shoulders.  Ligament tears are worse and take longer to heal (shoulders and knees)

Good argument against heavy benching especially, seems unnecessary. As the weights get heavier it's better to also increase the reps IMO, in addition to good warmups and/or pre-exhaust using a less dangerous exercise.

people need to stretch between sets it is a fucking must do....period...........

I know people who have tore muscle with 225 on bench press after the heavy sets were over and they were comming down in weight ...

Odds go way up with heavier weights, obviously, and those risks aren't required for a great physique. Ego's a big part of it when upping the weights too much.

Is it possible to fully heal a torn muscle?

What are the warning signs?

What's best to prevent a tear?

I've given up flat bench. Now I only use it for close grip to train triceps. I dont wanna risk no tears, it aint worth it, aight?

I probably haven't done flat bench in about ten years - it stretches out my front delts and the pec tie-in in such a way that it's the wrong type of muscle soreness. I prefer barbell inclines as it takes the pressure off my delts. I don't mind flat flyes because there's a bit more give in the range of motion but I acn't see me ever doing flat bech again.

i disagree about levrone.

he tore his pec in early 95, got 5th at the Olympia that year but went on to have a very successful career after that.

some guys wait too long to do anything after they tear it.  tommi thorvildsen is a perfect example.

So far you seem like the smartest person when it comes to training. BTW i started the back work on sunday. I know it works because my back never gets sore (DOMS). The only thing is that i take a hella long time to recover...

and Pec tears are my worst fear.

Don't use steroids. It's not just that you get stronger, the tendons get stiffer. If stretching helps to a large degree is debatable. Avoid movements where the tendon is put under heavy load in the stretched position. Often there are no warning signs.

Kevin tore hi pec in '93.

The funny thing is, some of the tears we hear about were done either indirectly or with lighter weight than you'd expect.

Like Kevin's tricep doing pulldowns and Vince Taylor's bicep with 30 lb DBs.

Are you saying that DA can make a baseball bat disappear by sitting on it?

Yeah, I heard that the muscle gets too strong for the tendons to support when on steroids.

Well, that's almost impossible if you want to work more than a 75% ROM. I think warming up and stretching plays a big part in protecting against tears.
