Well, would you?
-
overhead yes, just off the ground...average for a short time lifter
hope this helps... ;)
-
What if the person lifting it only weighed 200lbs at the time?
-
Yes.
Either way.
-
yes, especially if you're referring to the inch dumbbell.
-
I can d-bell row that and deadlift that too with one hand. Oh yeah, and I can shrug that too. ;D
-
Just pick up the weight off the ground with one arm? I'd consider that a pretty average deadlift. One arm row a 190lb db several times and I'd be more impressed.
-
I don't know about several times for me...but to just lift it sure...for a row that is. :-\
-

For a one-arm row I'd consider 6 to be several.
-
MOS is right. 6 with wraps would be strong. 1 or two with no wraps would be good.
-
Okay then, fine.
You see, I have noticed that Squadfather and the rest of his disbelieving crew are strangely absent from this thread despite having been logged in when this thread was started.
Is it because they know I'm going to post pictorial evidence of this so they're staying away?

post away stud!

post away stud!
FIRE AWAY!!!

This photo was taken at the Olympia Expo in '05. I had been away from training for several months - hence the dramatic weight loss (I only weighed 200lbs).
As you can see I lifted the weight quite easily - no warm-up, no wraps. It weighed 190lbs with the harness but I could've easily done more - there just wasn't the option. It is the only picture I have of me lifting anything. My wife took the photo.
-
u shoulda held out a lil longer till someone called u out on it... honestly, that fact that the handle is sooo thick seems to make it more impressive...
but lifting that rig p an inch or two off the ground isnt nearly as tough as lifting a db equally high off the ground...
i would guess that weight training would have little affect on ones a bility to lift that rig with that form, in that way...
-
would you call that "lifting it off the ground" when the handle is already 2 feet off the ground? thats more in the partial deadlift category where you just kinda lean back, you're way past the hard part thats the beginning of most off-the-floor deadlifts.

Yeah I forgot to mention that the handle was also very thick - that's what made it so difficult - not the weight itself.

notice how nobody is watching,....almost as if, hundreds of people had been walking up and lifting and taking pics all day...
BigJ when u gunna post a larger version of your avatar

There were about thirty people watching from where my wife took the photo - there was also a guy to my right (out of shot) verifying the lift becasue there were prizes to be won.
-
30 people watching yet the people 3 feet away dont even notice,.... ??? ???... why not make it 100 people watching and cheering your name...????
hey BigJ when u gunna post a larger pic of your avatar
-
The blondie is hot! I hope you banged her ;D
-
hahaha! another guy that uses big in their name, but's not!
where's your pic of your 300lb behind the neck press?
-
I knew that was coming up - like I said - I don't have any more pics of me lifting anything. If I did, I would post them because I'm not a coward and I back up my claims with photographic evidence. Where's your pics.
And by the way, I use "Big" in my username because I am - that picture was taken when I'd been out the gym for five months on a well deserved break; no training, no eating protein, no gear. Normally I weigh 235 but the heaviest I've been is 250. I weighed 200 there.
-
ummmm... bigJ when u gunna post a larger pic of ur avatar

Sorry

Sorry mate - forgot to answer that one - I don't have a bigger picture - I nicked it off a poster on another bodybuilding forum - I wish I knew where it came from (I've tried several google searches) but to no avail. I wouldn't mind some alternatives - double bicep, most-muscular or side chest would look awesome.

If you don't consider yourself big at that weight then you need to take a good look at yourself - you are obviously suffering with psychological problems (but then, I kind of figured that anyway).
You have muscle dysmorphia, where you don't consider yourself big no matter how big you get.
Unless of course the extra weight you are referring to is fat and you're 8ft tall.
-
hundreds of people are watching
they're thinking this skinny mexicans not strong enough to steal that.

Mexican? What the fuck are you on about now?
I'm a Brit you moron.
-
Mexican? What the f**k are you on about now?
I'm a Brit you moron.
hahaha! meltdown!
-
You're the one who's melting down - every time you right something it makes you look that much more retarded.
At least I've had the balls to post a photo - where's your pic?
I've owned you just by showing a photo to back up my strength claims - if that's what I can do at 200lbs imagine what I'm lifting at full strength?
-
The record for a full deadlift of the Ironmind Rolling Thunder is 274lbs. Yours looks like a 3\4 attempt at 190.
Pretty decent lift.

what's funny is little j started this thread trying to set us or the SQUAD up, so we would say " yeah that's strong, but couldn't do it bla bla blah" and it backfired on him.......

hahahahahahahahahaha, this is you???? this is the mass monster who has been claiming a 300lb. press behind the neck and 520 lb. squats for reps? hahahahahahahahaha, you look like an average skinny mexican, hahahaha, "bigJ", gimme a break. ::)
-
i literally just logged on 5 minutes ago or i wold have commented sooner, i can't believe this is the little bitch who has been making all these claims.
-
Yes, lifting 190 dumbell off the ground (without straps) and standing up with it is strong, for anyone. Of course many can do it, but not as many as some may think. I see guys trying to do shrugs with 150's without straps and they do like 3 then the bell drops from their hands....and some of these guys have been big guys.
-
I hate when people do that dumb old shit, you dont need all that to acheive a good workout... hahahah it just screams ....LOOK AT ME !!!!!
Monster Fat Weightlifter guy exercise...
gayer than shot put practice
-
you do look quite small however that is quite a lift, we have that contraption at my work and the handle spins also, the most i have ever seen is 200 pounds pulled off the ground. the size of the handle and the fact that it spins tests pinch grip, someone with crazy grip strength would pull over 200.
-
a 190 pound dumbell with a smaller grip and stationary is much easier, way easier.
-
hahaha! another guy that uses big in their name, but's not!
where's your pic of your 300lb behind the neck press?
hahahahaha, exactly Superstar, i also love how these clowns always say, "this picture was taken when i was taking a twenty two year break from lifting, eating and steroids" as an excuse for their skinnyness.
-
who cares about his size? the guy is lifting a 190 pound harness with a handle that looks to be about an inch and a half or so thick. that's impressive period, more so since he's about 200 pounds at the time. i doubt most on here bitching at him could do that with a dumbbell that had a standard thickness handle, let alone that thing.

he set himself up for this with the way he started the thread, and by the looks of the picture. it doesn't look like anyones paying attention to this amazing lift :-\

hahahahaha, you must be even skinnier and more pathetic than him if you're impressed by that, hahahaha, the handle is literally two inches from lockout.

to be honest ive done the 160's for a few reps so I'm pretty sure i can pick up a 190lb's with one hand :-\

Ok, let's clear up a few things.
He is doing the lift using a "Rolling Thunder" grip tool. He did the GNC "Grip Gauntlet" which GNC runs at all of the big expos (the Olympia and the Arnold for sure). The Gillingham brothers (all VERY strong mothers!)man the attraction and it includes that lift, a #2 Ironmind Gripper (to my recollection on the number), and a "Blob" which is a rounded slab of metal which must be pinch gripped. If you can get 2 of the 3 "lifts" you win a prize (again, to my recollection).
His grip strength is quite good if he can lift the weight with the Rolling Thunder. That is an impressive feat and the vast majority who try it cannot budge the weight from the floor.
Squadfather, don't showcase your ignorance once again by giving him shit about the lift. You can say he looks small etc. but that is a GOOD lift.
-
The RT's handle is 2 3/8 in diameter. The famous strongman Odd Haugen got 236lbs his 1st time out, so that should put this fellow's lift in prospective.

thanks powrod... wow... that guys jaw... hahahaha....
nobody said the lift wasnt impressive... just that standard weightlifting stregnth didnt really apply... height also seems to have a lot to do with it..... yes the wide grip makes a huge dif.... but that was mentioned... a dumbell off the floor would be tougher IMO, why?, because its way closer to the ground...

the grip is the question here, not his deadlift strength. i heavily doubt anyone outside of sarcasm is so weak that they couldn't get 190 pounds off the floor, even if it was one-armed. it's the fact that he could hold onto that thick-ass handle period that makes the lift impressive.

you wouldnt say that height and hand size has alot to do with it?... if a really tall guy with huge hands can straigten his knees while getting his hand wrapped around that thing does that make him stong... i dont know... the ROM is soooo small... but then again, bigJ doesnt seem so tall and his hand dont seem that big, so impressive yes... impressive showing of stregnth i really dont know

That's a very good point. grip test would only be an accurate measure of strength if EVERYONE had a 1/2 inch space between the for finger and thumb, otherwise the taller guy has a huge advantage, obviously. just like hanging test, only if everyone can adjust their weight, by adding weight or using a gravatron type machine to be (lets say 250) will the test be accurate. Or to make it simple adjust weight to be 300 by adding weight, then we can see who the strongest grip belongs to.

i think you're just trying to find whatever reason you can to discount what he's done and no matter what i say you're going to come up with another.

Excellent post. I'd forgotten what attraction it was at the Expo that I'd entered.
There was quite a queue before I did the lift and I'd say I stood around and watched about a dozen people before me try the Rolling Thuinder and fail - many of them were taller and bigger than me.
I couldn't pick up the "blob" which required a pinch-grip. That was pretty difficult and I didn't see anyone complete it.
I came very, very close to closing the no.2 ironmind gripper - Gillingham had to have a close look to see that it was properly shut but couldn't award it. I think the prize was to win a full set of the ironmind grippers but I came away empty handed - nobody won it as far as I know.
For the record - I'm 5'10'' in height which is about average - obviously the taller you are the easier it is. The picture doesn't really do me justice in terms of size but that wasn't the point of the exercise, to show how big I was, it was to show photographic evidence that I'm as strong as I say I am. Not many Getbiggers have produced photographic evidence of strength claims.
I may post pictures or even videos in the very near future so people who are genuinely interested can see some physique pics, or training videos. I'm no longer even going to respond to the hateful and jealous comments from SuperstarBilly, Squadfather and a few others as I believe their sole purpose on this board is to bully, gang up, and ridicule people no matter what the topic is. Any comments from them from now on will be ignored.

Yeah, GREAT point ::). By your logic then there can be no determination of strength. What about the guy benching with a barrell chest and short arms? No one questions those factors when comparing benches.

The blob is a BITCH! There are guys that can handle it easily including one if not all of the Gillingham brothers. Brad (I think he is the one) has deadlifted over 800 lbs using a hook grip!
-

i think they do... infact ROM is always brought up when discussing strength... not just how muc you can lift, but how much over what distance, right?
like i said impressive, but not a good way to mes. strength... this is a guy who claims a 300lb behind the neck shoulder press,... then he posts this pic...
what about palming a basketball? if someones fingers are super long to help them grip it, does that mean theyre stronger?

as you know, in bench meets you are placed into weight classes. Within reason, most guys are going to have similar torso girth within their weight class, so in that case there is no advantage. For example, i would bet that the top benchers in the super heavy class right now are within 8-10 inch chest measurment. So what's your point now.

no one was talking about competitions, this was talking about the straight impressiveness of the lift. you said bigj's picture wasn't impressive because he didn't have to lift it very far, chris brought up the valid point of short rom's on the bench. competition had absolutely nothing to do with it and you knew that. you're just scraping for a reason to argue and failing miserably.
-
I like you Magoo - you talk sense - you're one of the few people on this thread who's said anything positive.
But I kind of expected the all negativity really - I don't take the criticism personally because I know I'm just being coerced by keyboard sausage-jockeys who hide behind their computers slating the achievements of others. I can deal with it.

I think your mistaken, I NEVER said that his lift was not impressive. I said that anyone lifting that weight has good strength. I also agreed that that specific test or any grip test would be MORE difficult for a guy that had shorter hands...this is a known fact and the reason most guys that do great on the grip test in strongman are taller, ex is the pillar grip event where you have to hold the handles connected to the pillars. This lift shows very good grip strength, like I said.

my bad, guy. i got you confused with carvedoutofwood who i was getting annoyed with last night. you're correct about hand size and all. with bigj being about 5'10" and without the biggest hands, i'd say that makes it damn impressive.
-
I consider THIS impressive... 448lbs

what about palming a basketball? if someones fingers are super long to help them grip it, does that mean theyre stronger?
Demonstrable strength, one's ability to lift a given load is determined by many factors some of which include bone length and insertion points of the muscles. Neurological efficiency is yet another factor and some people just have "better" nervous systems with respect to the recruitment of motor units than others. Should we say, "Ahhhh, he isn't impressive he just has a more efficient nervous system."?
Humans cannot compete on an even ground with respect to the factors you are trying to invoke with your shitty argument. About the only evening of the playing field that is accepted in strength competition is a weight class.
