Title: Your first encounter with ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER....
Post by: Slick Vic on December 13, 2006, 05:45:14 AM
The very first time I met/saw Arnold in-person was in December of '97 at the Orlando premiere of Planet Hollywood. My friend and I had camped out there for 14 hours and got the BEST seats in the house. I was holding a "bodybuilding poster" of Arnold as he and Maria walked by. He smiled and waved, but no hand shake.

Fast forward to 2004. At the Arnold Classic, I was wearing a Arnold shirt that read: "My governor can kick your governor's ass". For those who've been to The Classic, you know that Arnold makes his round around the expo, so when he had walked by me I yelled, "Arnold! Look!" as I pointed to my shirt. He looked over at me and said, "Ahhhh... Look at you! Very nice!" and shook my hand. That ranked right up there with me being able to ask him a question each time I went to his seminar.  8)

My first time was at the Original World Gym probably around 1979 or so.  I used to look out the window and watch him walk across the street and all the cars stopping and staring at him.  I didn't see him train that much.  Several times but not a daily thing.  I went kind of early in the morning and was gone usually before he came in.  But I did take several showers with him and Franco and all the guys and girls

I only ever saw him close up once & that was in 94'  He was promoting something the same day I was at Disney Land & was able to get pretty close.

I've seen him a few times driving around Santa Monica back in 1999 & 2000 when I used to work out there on Montana Ave.  He owns a bunch of buildings/commercial property in that area.

I forgot a good one.  ;D

We were attending the 1988 Olympia at Universal Studios, and were walking into the show on the Red Carpet. There were big crowds on each side watching the festivities and we were walking a few people behind Arnold and his friends. When the crowd spotted Arnold they started yelling and the flash bulbs were going crazy.

We all started hitting front-double-biceps, most-musculars, etc...  Arnold turned and saw us and had a mighty laugh  ;D.

Man... that was 18 years ago.

Backstage, at the '76 Universe in Weider's hometown Montreal. He was in the audience watching the competition with Joe and came backstage for a while. The only BB there, amongst the guys from Pumping Iron like Franco, Robby & Ferrigno to have a small group of fans trailing him around. Maybe 10-15; not a lot of people by today's standards but big for those times, prior to any movie publicity. Included a hot number who I learned later in a bio was his local date for the night; she worked for Weider I think.

An aura of self-importance & preoccupation that wasn't necessary; not friendly. This was before Pumping Iron was released. He wasn't widely known, had no motivation to be friendly for the sake of image. Around 210 lb., navy blue sports jacket & jeans.

Franco guest posed, then with no hesitation or embarassment, proceeded to strip down and change into street clothes right there in the warmup room, with gasps from a few women.  :-*

I'm guessing that was around the same time as the fall '76 Universe held in nearby Montreal. Would be interesting to know what induced him to go to Chicoutimi of all places, unless one of the Weiders asked him to.

My first day in Venice with Teen America Frankie Vassil, after driving cross country to work for Golds, we had breakfast at the Rose Cafe, and a lot of the old timers were there...Zabo, Joe Gold....Frankie looks over my shoulder and says "Arnold just walked in!!"

Sure enough, he was sitting in a seperate cafe area with maria and a small entourage.  We sent a girl we were with out to buy a  camera, and waited in the parking lot for him to leave.....eventually Arnold left, alone..we asked him for a photo, and he agreed, even asking frankie (who had crazy legs) not to flex his legs (jokingly).  Looking back, he was pretty cordial, as we were just a couple of starstruck 20 year old wannabe's anyway.  this was '87.

My first encounter with Arnold Schwarzenegger was in March 2000 on the set of "The 6th Day".
We were setting up the shot, and there he was right in front of my face, ...it was skeeeeery!  :-X

amazing that Keith has spent a lot of time with the most famous and important people in the industry; yet he still has enough modesty to let the little brats on here give him a hard time.

i admire the life you have lived, and most on here would give anything to experience a tenth of what you have.

Wait till the story I have to tell you in about a month.  You will be blown away.  Thanks for all that but compared to others I know I have not done that much.  But, I predict it is going to get better very soon.

Hey I might not look like much now but i still have my mind.  I don't treat anyone especially my friends any different.  My Getbig brothers will be able to get special treatment.  I should be able to make an announcement within a month.  I will know a lot in the next week but give me a month

As far as I’m concerned, you’ve only done right by me.

Well I was hoping with better news but the deal was we were looking at purchasing World Gym which is up for sale.  We got lazy and even though we were talking to them (Planet Fitness) we had to do our due diligence and someone else jumped in there and now they have a 45 day exclusivity.  So, it may or may not work out for them so we will see.  In regards to EPIC we are still going forward (we were buying the World Gym through EPIC) and have changed the location for the Flagship to a larger building which we are looking into purchasing.  Everything is definitely going forward but the economy is certainly slowing things down a bit.  Pissing me off but what can I do.

I would go everyday if I could.  My leg been a little bother to me lately for some reason.  Last several days it has been a nightmare.  But, I still have the desire but just can't get in there more right now.  I am pretty sure I can get back to close to what I was once I get over all the shit happening.

yip, injurys they are a pain in the ass alright, i pulled my hamstring running 5 months ago and the leg has only come right as of last week, i found going hard out down the gym in the early-late 1990s never had one drama with injurys, and considering how much weight id throw around back then thats saying somthing, back then i was btween 120-128kg big, strong and all the rest of it...these days im hovering @ 100-103kg a lot fitter, good shape etc...but throwing all those crazy heavy weights around back then seem to be catching up these days with all sorts of niggles witch im sure you will relate too, anyway all the best. :)

Thanks but I have never had any joint problems and only have them in the leg I got bit on.  My lower leg was huge the past few days.  It is now going down but the water is around my knee.  I mean my knee is HUGE right now.  I can not even walk without leaning on the wall.  I didn't one piece of food today and only about a couple cups of water.  I can't even get up to go downstairs and get something to eat.  Which I guess is a good thing right now.  I hope tomorrow I can eat though.  We'll see.  But I know I can get back once everything falls into place.

It used to act up like that every month for the first few years.  I just had one about 6 days ago.  The last one before that was christmas 2006 and I spent two weeks in the hospital.  This time it got pretty bad but only lat about 3 or 4 days.  Now my right knee is so swollen i did not get out of bed or eat one solid bite for 35 hours.  I got up today though but still hurts like shit.  it has gotten alot better.

Sorry, not to get too personal…
Do you have family and/or close friends in Vegas?
Those kinds of people are usually the best support system, particularly when you have health issues.

I give you credit for making a move like that – especially leaving behind a daughter.
It sounds like you two were and are very close, and it’s great that she’s still an integral part of your life despite the miles that separate you.

I hope that one day I will share that kind of relationship with my own kids - lots of love and lots of geographic distance. ;D

Good luck!

I have friends in Vegas.  My daughter will be moving out here when I get the gym open.  Her husband is a surfer and can't leave there.  But I have convinced him on weekends go to California or Mexico and surf.  Plus we'll keep the house in Hawaii so any of us can go back when we want for a short stay.  I figured on retiring fully and just travel when I am around 55 or so.  We talk everyday.  When she was young she came and visited me alot in hawaii.  I always told her no girl her age ever got to go to hawaii as much as she did.  It seemed whenever she did something bad at home her mom would send her to me.  She would bring her homework and we would do it at the beach.  she has led a great life so far.  Very lucky
