Went to the gym at 6 am this morning and the place was practically empty and there was some dude benching next to me by himself. I watched a few of his sets and he was repping 275x5 and looked like he could handle the weight himself. I usually work with about 315 for 5 reps and do 5 sets without the need of a training partner.
I look over after a set and I see the dude slapping 3 plates on each side and trying to psych himself up. I asked if he needed a spot and he said, "no, I got it, bro." I went back to my set and was finishing my third rep when I heard this gasping sound. I racked my weight and looked over and the guy looked like he was about to fucking pass out with the bar just inches from his head. I ran over and snatched the bar and the guy didn't say a word and walked away embarrassed without cleaning the barbell off. I guess he was trying to match my effort and failed miserably.
Anybody ever have a similar situation occur?

i watched a kid struggle with 225 for 2 reps and then he put 295 on the bar and asked for a spot. he got it down to his chest and couldn't move it an inch. he looked at me all scared and i just said "come on man, explode!!!"...then i pulled it off him and just walked off. i kind of felt like a dick but he learned a good lesson.

Wow! Watching a guy all alone in the gym 'slapping' trying to strike up a conversation with a guy in an empty gym...looking for a reason to 'spot' him.
Mmmm Hmm.
Gayer than Clay Aiken watching reruns of Full House.

Yea once but with squats. I was doing a front squat/back squat superset with 315 for back squats and 225 for front squats. I finished my last set of back squats with 315 and was ready to unrack it and some really skinny guy who I had seen before said "no just leave it man". I dunno if he had warmed up his legs so I said okay. I stretched out about 5 feet from him as he got under the bar. His legs started to wobble as he unracked it and went down for his first rep and on the way back up his legs looked like they were going to break in half and he fell backwards. I guess he was happy that I had the safety bars in place. The dude left just like your guy. 8)

What a f*cking tool! Shoulda said...hey brutha, where's my thanks? >:(
I can't stand inconsiderate people! Next time let him pass out and pull it off him while he's a sleep then rack it and pull 2 wheels off so he wakes up thinking the 135 got him!

Saw a cable snap on a pulldown machine one time...... Bad news :(
I used to work out at Levrone's gym in MD and I saw a guy doing two hand cable curls. The cable snapped as he was bringing the bar up and it split his nose. Blood everywhere. Guy needed cosmetic surgery to fix his face up. Levrone payed for his surgery to avoid a lawsuit.

This guy fell forward and his hand was crushed by all the weight. No idea on the severity of the injury's. It looked like it was about 100 lbs so I assume nothing that horrible.

Guts, how does Ray Lewis train? How about the rest of the team?
During the offseason, Ray trains in Miami with Ed Reed. During the season, the players train at the Owings Mills facility on Monday or Tuesday after games. Not a ton of weightlifting during the season. When they do train with weights, it's usually light or medium intensity to avoid possible injury. The rest of the week is tied up in film study and injury treatment. Lots of calisthenics throughout the week to stay loose and keep the muscles warm as the weather gets cold.
One of Ray's exercises down south is running up hills at full speed with two 45lbs plates at a 45 degree angle. Helps with explosiveness. Kind of like plyometrics.

I know guys that play in the nfl are naturally big. But, how do they hold on to size when they do not lift? You would think with all the wear and tear they would lose alot of size.

Not nearly as stupid as Joey P's "we ride, let's ride" chant!
Monster faggotry.

steeler o lineman max starks said on a local tv station that they lift 3-4 times per week to try and maintain as much muscle as possible but with all the work they do it is impossible to hold on to all of it

Just goes show the level of genetics running around in the nfl. Some players still look pretty big late in the season.

AAHHAHAHAHA!!! Wow 225 and 315lbs.......we got some real beasts on this thread!!

Earl's correct. The players usually will squeeze in a third day to lift during the week, depending on their individual injury situation, if any. As the season winds down the lifting becomes less intense with an emphasis on staying healthy. Training camp is fucking brutal. Those guys have to lift everyday after morning and evening camp sessions. But these guys know to be in shape before the start of camp, not rely on camp to get them in shape.

315lbs for reps suck? 5 sets of 5? I guess I do suck....... :(
I can lift more than Matt Stover, though! :D

Imagine how hockey players and baseball players feel with the length of their seasons. I would imagine keeping size and strength would be a bitch.

Bro, you have no idea. These pros are the alpha males genetically speaking. Nobody at the skill positions( QB, RB, WR, and most defensive positions) sucks in the NFL. I always crack up when dudes always say, "that guy sucks!" during a game. "that guy" that they're referring to is probably a better athlete than anybody they ever grew up knowing. These guys are the best of the best, man. Bottom line.

Like Larry Fitzgerald who is a kickass WR but also throws bombs like any other QB.

I know. Seymour plays for my team homey. Ben Watson is another mutant.

It never seises to amaze me why people gotta do weight that they simply cannot handle. He's lucky you were there and were kind enough to run over and save his sorry ass.

Tomlinson is incredable.

I was doing T-bar rows last week for my first warm-up set and the v grip or w/e thing snaps right in half as soon as I lifted it off the ground. Would've been funny if I had it more than 8 inches off the ground. Suffice to say that I saved my own life because well, I'm just that good.

If you're doing 5 sets of 5 you should be able to muster one all out set of 10 which puts you close to the 405 mark maxing out. I'd say your good to go! I know everyone is different but when I could hit 315 for 8-9 I could nail 405 for a single. I think I was doing 365 for 5 at the time. Call me a bitch but shoulders keep me from going that heavy anymore! Maybe I should be thinking about HRT now... ;D
-
I once had to pull 365 lbs off a guy who was benching in his jeans. he actually did a couple of reps w the weight . . . and then just got stuck.
i jammed and cut one of my fingers pretty deep as I helped him rack it . . . i had to come in from the front.
he didn't thank me either. I walked away. But i think if someone just saved my ass from asphyxiation, I'd find him and thank him. guy was a dumb shit.
i also saw a guy fail w 260 . . . funny thing was the weight didn't touch his chest. he lowered the weight to practically his knees in one smooth motion and then stood up w it. i was quite impressed.
-
Back in the 80's I saw a guy doing behind the neck pulldowns (ouch) and the cable let loose and the bar hit him on top of the head and left a dent. He just "Mother Fucked It" and went on training. Today there would be a lawsuit.

You're probably right. I'm just trying to work through a plateau. I can lift more on incline benches. For some reason I'm stronger on an incline than flat bench. Is this common or do you just have more leverage that way to get the weight up?

I think it's just what you have been doing the most of and how you leverage your body. I was the same way till I stopped doing alot of incline work. Everyone preaches that so all I did was incline, turns out I looked funny with alot of meat up top and sloppy down low, was really wierd. Personally I find flat dumbells are the best for me all around!

I agree. I love dumbs only for chest.

I'd never seen this before but a few months back some kid was benching at my gym and he bit off more than he could chew. He's of course at that point where failure is imminent (without a spotter) and both myself and my training partner are standing there as you do.. not really wanting to embarass the guy or spot him unnecessarily. Quickly, it becomes obvious this is going to end in tears so we both dash for him. Anyway, the kid takes the initiative and does something quite interesting. As the bar is falling towards his head, he slips out from under the bar and lets it fall on the bench. Quite a manouvre.
.. 2 minutes later he's benching the same weight, struggling the same and again with no spotter ::)
-
There's heaps of young guys benching 225 ish for low half reps, real shonky reps too, no negative control, just waiting for something to snap. There's this one guy thats bigger than the average gym guy. Always does half reps and leaves the weights everywhere, he'll do dumbell presses and leave 4 pairs of em on the floor and just leave. He's always posing the the mirror, doing double bi's and side chests. Everyone hates him.
Squats are worse. They should play pro videos in the gym, set an example of how to lift.

Can't be adonis since that is too much weight for him to handle. I would guess bast but he can barelly do 225 pounds. So my final guess is that it was the Squadfather's pet mouse, Mars!

i'll say it again having played pro sports myself and having a best friend that played in the nfl ...alpha males...better at anything then almost anyone...i'll take up your sport and beat u in 6 months more or less....not bragging just the facts....i asked the resident squash pro at my club to play with me once and he basically said that i wasn't good enough ...so a few months later i handed his ass in front of the people that knew him...and trash talked him all the way. he played #2 for amherst and thought he was the shit....fuck...i went on to playing qualies for pro tournaments after a couple of years playing part time...my buddy eric (stocz) ..never touched a tennis raquet in his life and in half an hour he was able to hit the ball with me back and forth decently....we also use to compete in sprint drills, plyometrics...high jump....anything was a competition...even going out and picking up chicks...we played ono-on-one bball for 6 hours straight just to prove who's better...also we use to bet small amounts on anything...fun times filled with plenty of testosterone.
