Here is the next lot of screenshots from my Sergio video collection. This batch is from the 1968 Olympia where Sergio won unopposed. Like the '66 Mr World shots, these aren't the best of quality but are very rare & historic.

awesome pics! what a monster!

Pdvd_054 and Pdvd_057 are some of the freakiest shots out there. Look at his freaking legs! Way ahead of his time.
-
It's remarkable how few good pics or film there is of 60s and 70s shows; the technology was there but somehow even Weider who was savvy on other things didn't cover this angle well. Too bad, though there must be some decent material out there that isn't widely circulated.

thanks man, much appreciated. keep up the good work.
-
Great pics, Thanks.
-
haha I see why everyone was scared. :o

Here's the latest batch of screenshots from my Sergio collection. It's the only known footage of the 1969 Olympia and shows the final posedown between Sergio, Arnold & Franco plus Sergio receiving his Olympia cheque. It only runs for three minutes but it's priceless footage. It's great to see Arnold so happy at taking 2nd place as he must have thought at the time "How the hell am I ever going to beat this guy". Very gracious. Enjoy the pics!!!!

It looked pretty close between Sergio and Arnold. In that back double bi, Sergio really owned him on width. Great sportsmanship between them both.

thanks once again nr 77
-
Great post again my friend. Thanks.
-
Its kind of amazing that is the only footage of such a legendary battle.
-
Nice footage! It is too close to call but Sergio was crazy massive!
-
I've got that video footage as well. It can be purchased through GMV.
V-147 titled "Mentzer & Friends".

Maybe someone with this and other videos could put this on youtube.com?

yeah..and his training video would be even better!

Interesting how there's video of the 1960's competitions but none of 1972 or 1981 Mr. O. Hmmm....

I have footage of the '72 Olympia and will be posting the screen shots very soon. Footage of the '81 Olympia definitely exists in a few forms but I don't have any of it.

kiss,s all round... ;D

Great shots, Johnny.
Sergio seemed to slightly outmass Arnold on upper leg size, but everywhere else was toe-to-toe. Here's one more for the collection:

Terrible lighting.
Pics of that show have always suggested to me that it was obvious why Weider replaced Oliva as Mr Olympia. The only question was when to do it. He'd found a substitute with the same muscle size who was also taller with more refinement, definition and lines. Who was white, better looking and more articulate even with the accent. Someone who was obviously a far better rep for BB and for pushing mag and product sales to new highs. A no-brainer in other words to someone like Weider intent on expanding the market. Not even close.
Looking at pics from that show i've always thought that Oliva was fortunate to have been allowed to win in '69, they were already so close and quite frankly Oliva couldn't have been much smoother than he was there. Add to that his excessive application of oil. Nor did Oliva seem there to have been a good winner. Very much into himself, unaware from what i see there that it was already a very close show that he could've easily lost.
Joe allowed Oliva to win it mainly so as to make what was a young contest appear more legit, IMO. A good idea, just as with established sports like boxing-when it's close give it to the established guy, at least the first time. Installing his new protege as immediate winner the first time out would've seemed suspect in a show still in the process of establishing itself vis-a-vis other more established shows then available.
Thanks for the rare pix.

You sorta hit the nail on the head-"Joe allowed". Thats pretty much how every olympia was decided.

This is probably the most impressive shot of Sergio I've seen. Those arms are just insane.
