Title: Tall, lanky older guy benching 405 for 8 like it's nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: The Squadfather on December 30, 2006, 04:02:54 PM
check this old powerlifter out, he's also got bands on there, 405 for 8, it's at the 3 minute 10 second mark.

Thats the video from Jim Kegrice's gym in San Diego.  I've done a few meets some of those guys were in and they are strong as fuck.  I think Kegrice pulled close to 700 at 220 recently.  He's the short bald guy in the vid.

well admittedly it's a reverse band press, so the weight at the bottom is considerably less than 405. green bands, took off over 100 pounds up to i think 150-ish depending on how taut they were. regardless that was some damn good lifting for any age, let alone an older guy with long-ass arms.

I was wrong, he pulled over 700.  He did 688 at 198 in WABDL.

you put the bands at the top of the rack and hook them under the bar. it's basically hanging off them, so it's light at the bottom and heavy at the top. the closer you get to the bottom the greater the upward tension is.

damn i never would have guessed that, looked like he kind of struggling with 405 for that modified sumo pull off the floor.

The weight deloads at the bottom since the bands are pulling from the top.  Its almost like a lockout.  Still strong though.

no wonder, that looked way too easy to be 405, he was doing that easier than Coleman does 405 in COR.

more band trickiness. this time the bands (looked like a green and a blue, so a fuckton of tension there) were way in front, forcing you to pull straight backwards with a hell of a lot of force. i'd imagine most of us would get that two inches off the ground and then get yanked forwards. absolutely nuts.

He has about 250 pound of band tension on top of the 405.

bands are pretty sick, yeah. a while ago i got to lift at a damn good PL gym and we were doing box squats. 235 on the bar (2 45s and a thick 55lb squat bar), but then a couple bands on it. made the tension at the top over 400. you have to get some serious speed out of the bottom or you get stuck. did the same with pulls, 185 and i have no idea how much tension in bands but the lockouts were ridiculous.

hey, i always need a guy to verify or correct what i'm saying. my experience with bands is pretty basic, admittedly. i know just enough to sound like i know what i'm talking about.

i'm not sure. i would guess that it likely is, but i couldn't tell. it all depends on if the bands are positioned so they aren't pulling up on the bar any more at the top of his lift. band work isn't about power, it's about speed.

Power is the combination of mass and speed?

that place looks like a huge gimmick made to have shitty looking guys feel better about themselves.

guy with 250 lbs of reverse tension on bench (why not use 155 lbs on bench instead)?

guy with 7 tons on squats going down 3 inches, then pulling himself up by the rack, guy box squatting whatever, guy doing bench with a bent bar so he can get actual full range of motion by avoiding his gut/tits.

looks retarded.  what's with the round dumbells? are they somehow more hardcore?   ::)

in the strict physics sense, sure. but in powerlifting there's grinding strength and explosive strength. you'll have a guy who can work through a lift in 5-10 seconds, or someone like brian siders who gets the lift in a split second or not at all.

strictly speaking, though, work is force * distance, and power is work/time. so we're training to lessen the time.

sounds like this siders fella needs to up the weight or the other guy needs to lower his.

Don't some powerlifters also put heavy chains on the ends of the bar,so it gets heavier as they go up?

yep. some do both bands and chains with very little bar weight. some do a lot of bar weight and then just a little bit by way of chains or bands. all depends on where your strengths and weaknesses are. also what kind of equipment you use.

Training with bands is a method of variance and used a lot on speed days.  It is a legitimate way of training for strength and the strongest men and women in the world use them extensively.

In the bench video being referred to Louie Simmons of Westside (www.westside-barbell.com) would call that the "lightened method".

Mister magoo,  Yes I have competed.  I won my first show the NPO Long Island at 14 years old in 84, then won the east coast same year,  placed top 3 in many shows after that leading to the NPC NY at 16 with a way beyond my years shredded physique with the help of mr unverse steve michalik.  Then competed and won a couple mens open shows in 87-88 as a teen (18-19) then got into natural bodybuilding eventually winning a pro qualifier, then got back into the npc with a win in 02 at golds classic jersey super heavy (should have went to nats but didn't, then preped for 03 nats came into weigh in at 264 (the pix I posted was 2.5 weeks out) and didn't feel my best so didn't compete.  Most other people would have competed and perhaps I should have but I'm my toughest critic.  since then decided I had enough of the hormones (01-2-03) and pursued other things... Today I'm with no hormones for 3 years and doing at least an hour day, jump rope, wrestling boxing and I'm still 265, but not as hard or big...BUT WAAAAAAAY BIGGER....then this dick head, "squad father" who is nothing but a wanna be and will never post a pix and never even looked anywhere near what I could show you at 16 years old, hahahahahaha, this kid is a internet muscle man.

How about your self, do you compete or have you?  What kind of training are you into?
