Title: Beach scene in Australia for everyone.
Post by: Vince B on December 30, 2006, 07:07:08 PM
I was just shooting this beach scene and included a few people in the photo. When I got home I was surprized at what I had captured. I think photography is more rewarding that discussing training and how strong others are. What a waste of time. All the best to everyone in the New Year. Too bad some of you don't accept my offer to come to Sydney and train in my gym. Sydney is a great place if you like going to the beach. I will have to represent the board when I go bodysurfing at the many great beaches in Sydney. Most of the gals on Bondi and Coogee are from overseas at this time of year. We get zillions of backpackers here. Just about everyone covers up but some still go topless which is exactly what I do, too.

Click on the words under the photos to view them full size. The first photo was taken about 6:30pm so not many still on Bronte Beach. This is a family beach and Tamarama and Bondi Beaches are just around the corners at the top of the photos. Coogee is around the corner going the other way to the right.

Here is a scene from Coogee for you fellows. Surf is much better at Bondi.

Sydney has a couple of nude beaches. I used to go to a couple of them. I heard the gay guys hang around a lot and that spoils it for me. Women look sexier with clothes on, by the way!

Here is a closeup for you blokes.

I have lived longer in Australia than in Canada. When I visit my home town they ask me where I am from, yet in Sydney I have a strong Canadian accent. I am a citizen of both countries. I have lived in Sydney since January 1971. 'Blokes' and other words have their place in discourse. I won't ever be an Aussie but I am an Australian citizen.

Kids make a wonderful subject for photos. Nowadays one has to be careful who you take photos of. If you look at the photos it is clear they pretty much were oblivious of having any photos taken. That is why candid photos are so good.

Clovelly is between Coogee and Bronte which are both south of Bondi Beach. Clovelly has a large car park next to it but look at the concrete surrounding that beach. Some people do scuba diving there.

Coogee surf sucks. The waves break too close to the shore and you can get dumped. Heaps better beaches in Sydney for surfing but Coogee has a lot of nice gals. Too much seaweed, etc., in the wild surf there.

Some locals walk along the beach in the mornings and evenings. You can walk from Bronte to Bondi along the coast and the mild breeze and beautiful scenes are wonderful. A great place to live.

Dee Why Beach is on the North part of Sydney. The water was cold that day so not many swimming. Lots of migrants go to the beaches while the locals wait for really hot weather. You can tell when lots of locals are at the beach because many take tents and beach umbrellas to protect against the ultraviolet rays.

Only one beach with a net and that is Balmoral. I have some photos. They have nets out from some beaches that capture sharks. No one has been taken by a shark in Sydney since the 1930s. If sharks wanted to eat humans they would have an easy time of it. When you first swim at Bondi you are a bit scared and shadows and dark seaweed can cause alarm. Occasionally they sound an alarm if they sight a shark and everyone scrambles for the shore! I have never seen a shark at any beach in Australia and I used to live across from this beach.

Aside from looking at the topless women, I'd rather punch my clown than waste a day on the beach.  It always reminds me of a bunch of dead bodies doing nothing.  What an odd event.

You guys should take up bodysurfing. It is exhilerating and you feel great when you catch a wave and go right into the shore. I have caught waves and then stood up in ankle deep water. I like hanging out at the beach. The air is clean, the sand, surf and sun all make it a special place to be. When I get tired of looking at girls in bikinis I will stop going there!

You just can't go up to people and chat them up. Most people are left alone when they are at the beach. Still, there are too many lonely people in big cities.

A famous Duke from Hawaii came to Sydney about 100 years ago and was one of the first to surf there. About that time it was illegal to swim on Sydney beaches during most of the day! What a bunch of stiff shirts those policitians were in those days. They thought society would collapse if people saw others in swimming suits. So the throngs gathered on the beaches but no one went in for a swim until after 8 pm at night or early in the morning.

When i was 10 years old a group of us kids went to Bondi we all went swimming and this is where the drama started i got caught in a rip and was being dragged out to sea, it was coming on dusk and i was being dragged out to sea,150 to 200 meters from the shaw, i thought i was fucking dead, then out of nowhere a life saver dragged me back to shore. This was 24 years ago and never got over it and have never been to the beach again.
Lifeguards deserve medals there heroes.

Hi Guy, I said hello to you at Golds Gym, Venice, in September 2000. We talked about your amazing calves.

I used to hang out at Coogee when Barry Hart owned the gym there. I never went inside Giles. They used to have a warm pool with ocean water there. Just a doorway remains of that structure.

hey Vince,
I spent 2 yrs living and working in Sydney. Spent many a weekend down at Bondi, Coogee and was living at Manly.
So spoilt for beachlife really.
Trained a number of times at Mitsos's gym but mainly trained at that 24 hr gym in the heart of the city. Can't remember the name - it's too many years ago now.
Then I ended up training down at a tiny little studio place just back from Manly beach.
I remember one time at bondi looking out at two whales 'frolicking' for a few hours then i heard on the news that one of them was caught up in a net or something and basically was dying but i believe it managed to free itself. I think that was 2001/02 sometime. If you recall that I hope memory serves and that the whale escaped.
Anyway - miss your beaches - great times.

Alexxx, do you try to be a dickhead or does it come naturally to you? I was with my girlfriend when I took these photos. Guess I am wasting my time posting them here for you guys who live in cold places like Montreal. I spent a year there and another year at St Jean. I never enjoyed the 10 feet of snow that you get every year. That is why I prefer living in a sub-tropical place like Sydney.

dont let vince fool you..sydney is EXPENSIVE...even the OS tourists say that....the beaches are little coves spread apart and crowded as heck and the water in the past has been unswimmable due to the efluent in it. sydney has major problems with ethnic gangs and is the gay capital of australia. car parking in the city will cost you $50-$75/hour.

now Australia has 2 spots that are a must see...perth and adelaide. pristine waters, literally 100s of km of unbroken white sand with the occassional person on them,...affordable and large enough to have everything...

Gosh, a lot of misinformation about Sydney. Yes, it is an expensive place to live. Gas costs heaps and property, does, too. I hate paying for parking but the last time I looked it was a few dollars per hour in downtown Sydney. I take the train or bus into the CBD.

There was trouble a year ago at one of the beaches. Lots of resentment built up in Aussies over the years. They don't consider ethnic people as fair dinkum Aussies and I know that. Everyone more or less gets along over here because there is so much open space. There are plenty of beaches for everyone. I actually prefer busy beaches like Bondi but forget about parking near the beach. Same thing happens in Venice beach. The old days are gone when you could park there no worries. Muslim communities are not popular in Australia and it didn't help when a gang of them raped a girl. They got really long jail sentences and that caused trouble on both sides. So the Lebanese don't feel that they are Aussies even though they were born here. I understand that sentiment. The Aussies resent just about everyone from overseas. In recent years people have emigrated from Vietnam and now some countries in Africa. With each migration the older people become part of the scene whereas the newly arrived get some negative attention. If you go to some shopping centers such as Parramatta you will find it a melting pot of people from all over the world. I suppose that is the future and some are not happy about that.

The gay scene is more open here than perhaps in some other countries. It is similar to attitudes in San Francisco. I could care less about homosexuals because I long ago realized they are not a threat to me. I think many men are worried that gay men will come onto them. That is not what happens. So I can see there is resentment. I happened to have had a girlfriend who had a deceased gay brother and she had heaps of gay mates from America and Australia. They fall in love like the rest of us and I came to see them as individuals and not as anyone strange. Running a gym will make anyone tolerant because gay men do frequent gyms. I treat them like everyone else.

Yes, I have been to City Gym in the city that is a hang out for many gay men and things go on there that I would not like to see in my gym. So it is horses for courses and I guess we men have to accept that some men dig other men. That should mean there are more women for those of us who are straight. Then there is the lesbian community. They and I don't really get along so well for some reason!

I find the anti gay sentiments on Getbig by many regulars rather worrisome. What the heck is all that resentment? Maybe straight guys feel good when they can bash gay men. Ignorant men in Sydney used to bash gay men. That is not tolerated anymore so that is a good thing. I think we all can do a better job of respecting others and this includes their sexuality. Getbiggers also are anti fat and that is another worry. Who out there looked great before taking up bodybuilding? Therefore, we should all be tolerant of fat people and skinny people. It isn't so easy to reverse obesity. Oh, bodybuilders can control fatness levels but it is not so easy as you get older. In the old days I could lose 20 pounds in two weeks and get abs. Nowadays if I diet I lose muscle and remain without a washboard. So I tend to not bag anyone and never fat people.

Australia is a good place to live. Sydney is a huge city but it is still relatively safe to live in and I never worry about being attacked or mugged when in the city or the suburbs. People do their own thing and mostly ignor what others are doing. There is lots of space for everyone here and you just have to work hard to get ahead.

I agree except most getbiggers are "anti-fat" only really to those who are delusional about their body composition i.e. a fat guy thinking he has as much muscle as jay cutler becuase he is 300 pounds and jay cutler walks on stage around 275 pounds.

Girls were quite brave and jumped off this cliff into the rough surf. I did it once and it was quite dangerous. I slid off some slippery rocks in the water! It is about 15 feet to the water. Doesn't seem like much but not everyone could do this. You had to wait for the surf to swell underneath so you didn't hit the rocks. Then you had to climb up the wall when the surf calmed down. Crazy thing to do, really, but I had to do it once.

In Australia just about every schoolkid can swim because they teach lifesaving to them as part of sport each year. I used to teach high school PE and we were the first school in NSW that taught senior boys surf lifesaving. Heck, I am not that good at swimming but I managed to get a group of no-hopers to pass their surf bronze way back in 1975 at Killarney Heights High School.

They let kids into the surf with floating objects. Quite dangerous if you are swimming and they come in and hit you. They don't allow those things in the surf in California where others are swimming.

You can grow anything near the beach in Byron Bay.
Try to grow some ozone layer there, I have heard that you have a shortage of that down there. It really doesn't show in the pictures, but if you read a statistic of the skin cancer in Australia, you get the different picture of your beach life. I bet that problem isn't appreciate there at the way it should be. Your average sun lotion protective factor should be something like 50 000...
Title: Re: Beach scene in Australia for everyone.
Post by: Vince B on January 01, 2007, 01:54:28 AM
Everyone is aware of skin cancer. The tourists seem oblivious. Many here sit in little tents on the beach or under umbrellas. We use lotion on our faces and tender areas and many of us wear surf shirts as well. I have had a skin cancer burned off. Also, as people age they lose proteins in their skin that protect them from the sun. The sun tends to be very bright in Australia. About 20 years ago there was a revolution and a lot of the women went topless on the beaches. Nowadays the locals cover up because of worries about skin cancer. Kids have coverings and hats when they go out in the sun.

Cable Beach in Broome
Kakadu
Margaret river just south of Perth
Kings canyon and..
Billy's Beach house on the Gold Coast

Vince is right about the summer in sydney... it really is a fvck-fest with the foreign tourists.

I think some of their families would be horrified if they knew what they get up to with other tourists and aussie guys when they come over here - nobody to tell on them I guess helps to spread their legs pretty quick.

I can generally tell pretty much where a tourist is from as soon as they start talking to me now I've met so many...

I like the little irish girls the best personally... but i'm into shrimps that like to drink beer!

Hey, I should be working for the tourist department! I will see what I can find in the archives for you guys that are in the middle of winter. The nice thing about Sydney is that flowers bloom every month of the year here. I won't bore you with my flower photos!

thanks Vince, we appreciate that you go to the beach to take pictures of topless girls for us.

In some countries you could be arrested for that

They used to be very conservative in Australia but things became more liberal over the last 30 years. You can go topless on any beach here in Australia but most beaches the gals cover up. On Bondi, Manly and Coogee the tourists feel free to do what they like. Many from Germany and Scandinavia don't feel inhibited so go topless. Maybe it helps to be away from home on the other side of the world.

Some guys have gone on the beach and taken photos of topless girls and got arrested for it in Sydney last year. However, I doubt anyone can do anything about tourists and anyone else snapping photos of the beach from the sidewalks near the beach. If a gal is topless there then so what? The gals at Tamarama Beach during the sculpture show would have seen the thousands of people passing by up on the hill and many of them were pointing cameras at the beach. With small digital cameras you don't have to hold the camera at eye level and so no one knows what the photographer is shooting.

To be frank, most nude bodies are not exciting at all. I think it is the idea that some are partly nude that is exciting. I am sure almost all men look. So a photo is really a record of particular glances. If women believe it is bad to show flesh they shouldn't go to public beaches and expose themselves. Heck, America is still hung up on nudity. I waited and waited for things to change there but they never did. That is partly because you elect too many officials who then clean up on things like nudity and prostitution. There is a lusty core in humans that survive all revolutions but the politicians always bend to pressure groups and impose restrictions on the freedom of individuals.

I consider myself a photographer and humans are an interesting subject and the beach is a special place. I think my images reflect that I take a wide range of photos and not just semi-nude ladies. Occasionally one takes exceptional images that just happen to have topless girls in them. I have to go to my gym. I will continue this thread later.

paragraphs vince, paragraphs... much easier to read

I agree with the covered up bit.. what you can't see adds mystery and intrigue..

I like the white pointers and the bronze whalers too, like most guys however they should keep the swimsuit on between the flags. Explaining it to my daughter is difficult and I'm running out of reasons to explain to my wife why we always set up near the topless girlies..

Tokyo Joe had the same problem I had. Whenever I went to Bondi years ago I was always surrounded by topless chicks. I swear it was sexual harrassment!

Some items...

Great photos Vince...I want to move to Australia.

That condo highrise is great!

Australians are more opened minded, so the gay thing is no big deal, cousins are Aussies.

Gay guys do not mess everything up, try doing your next contest with a haircut from a straight guy. The gay guys know how to cut a bodybuilders hair.. this from a bodybuilder.

Bigdumbell knows his Hibiscus...color me shocked!

I grew up in australia and still travel to Australia a lot becuz my fiancee is Australian. All i got to say is:

CALIFORNIA OWNS ALL OF AUSTRALIA. Scenery, girls, people's attitude, partying, everything is better in Cali.

Australian people have got to be the most annoying people in the world. And this comes from an Australian citizen.

kind of a generalisation to compare the ENTIRE country of australia to southern cali too don't you think?

fair enough to compare the northern beaches to cali or bondi to cali becasue they are similar climates/scenes.

I'm curious to see where he grew up...

I like cali too btw...
