what is the difference and how does alcohol sugar affect my nutrition plan?
I guess it depends on the context of the question :-\ Sugar alcohols tend to cause stomach distress in a lot of people. Some alcohols raise blood sugar so if you're a diabetic, then I'd avoid. Falling into the Atkins mentality trap ("x" net carbs) is dangerous because (if you don't have tummy issues) alot of people will over-eat thinking "oh, it's only 4 net carbs" ::) In the case of chewing gum - eh, no big deal. Personally, I wouldn't make it part of the regular diet (ie; eating Atkins bars everyday) since there really is no nutritional value.
This is quite an informative (Mendosa has a lot of good info) article http://www.mendosa.com/netcarbs.htm

I would suggest staying away from sugar alcohol whenever possible. It really upsets my stomach.
