This is an interview with Jim Rockell. If there is a single judge in bodybuilding who deserves to be called a "master-judge", it is this guy. He has been involved with bodybuilding since the 1960s, and has been a bodybuilding judge since the early 1970s. He was already at the 1977 Olympia as an auxiliary judge. He is now the chairman of the Men's I.F.B.B, and the head judge of the Mr.Olympia. He has judged 600 bodybuilding contests in 30 years, both at the amateur and professional levels. According to him, judging pro shows is easier, because top pros have very few flaws - otherwise they wouldn't have reached that level in the first place. He has judged Bannout's, Haney's and Dorian's physiques, as well as Ronnie's since he competed at his first Olympia. This guy is the man.
According to him, Ronnie lost mostly due to: lack of development and separations in his back and relative overall flatness compared to his previous self, as well as being slightly off in conditioning. He said that Cutler beat him mostly due to increased crispness of separations and hardness, not size. Here's the interview:

And IF that is the case, why didn't Jay win in 2001, when he was arguably better than Ronnie, and worlds ahead of his 2000 self?

I think Jay is fully aware 2001 showing is his best showing to date. His waist was smaller, his arms were bigger, and his symmetry was even better. No one seems to ever address the fact that Ronnie is arguably the most symmetrical bodybuilder of any time period. Yes, this year his back was off, his conditioning was off, and his injuries were noticeable. If everyone wants to call out Ronnie's injuries, why isn't anyone calling out Jay's possible "nerve" damage. I really don’t' know where to sit with this one… Is it genetics, or is it an injury? Why isn't Bob Swoop asking the reigning champ if he's suffered nerve damage? It was in the magazines… Chad called him on it.. Some others did too….

Maybe. But the bottom line is that, when you raise the bar at something - in this case, back thickness, which he did at the 2003 Olympia -, you have an obligation to uphold that standard.
Nor should Jay be judged based on margin of improvement.
Cutler's small margin of improvement was enough to make him become better than Ronnie after his regression. What is so fucking hard for you to understand? ::) Rockell was already judging bodybuilding contests when you were pooping in your diapers, so I trust his judging more than I do your amateurish opinion. ;)

Ronnie had "an obligation" to be the best man on the stage. Period.
The 77 Steelers had a much stronger defense than the 2006 Steelers. Should we take Bettis' ring back?

That's a great shot 240. Look guys, his waist is no where near what it is now, in terms of overall size...you know, that Kitchenaid look... I'm no expert, be it GH, FOOD, squats....lack of lifting belt... bull shit...more bull shit... He can't present that 2001 package anymore. And yes, Ronnie can't present his best either. But does anyone remembe the '05 comparison of Victor and Ronnie at the big O? Ronnie's waist was nearly as small, and flater I might add then Victor's...and Ronnie had better legs.... maybe less full then Victor, but he was the better b.b that day. You cannot make a case for Jay this year. If anyone should have taken the title from Ronnie this year, it should have been Victor. The only issue I have with Victor, is whether he uses some 'sight enhacment' ...to his arms/calves/delts... that's my only quip about him.

Ronnie does NOT have the complete physique. He has a certain degree of shape and detail but , let's be honest , he has a lot of weaknesses : calves , hamstrings , midsection. He has flaws on his physique that you just can't find on my physique or Flex Wheeler's physique.
Did they even count the posing routine? Ronnie Coleman is never going to be remembered for a posing routine.

That would be a symmetry issue and 2006 Ronnie's lats were asymmetrical as well as his triceps , among Ronnie's balance issues.

The bottom line is that Cutler was almost as good as Coleman last year, and this year he surpassed him. Period.
FYI, I am not saying I know more than Jim Rockell, I'm simply pointing out the fault in your suggestion that he automatically knows more than someone younger than he does or who hasn't been around the industry as long as him.
It doesen't work that way, kid. How many contests have you judged? How many have you even attended? Rockell has judged more shows than you have attended, and he has seen ten times more physiques up-close than you have in all of your magazine collection combined. ;)

Well, I don't agree with that totally. I do think that Jay improved a lot his overral muscularity. He had deeper separations - especially on his quads - in 2001 and his midsection was tighter and more separated as well, but he is now on an obviously higher level of muscle development. However, I do agree that 2001 was his best conditioning by far.

Rockell was arguably refering to Ronnie's 2003 version, not 2000 or 2001. The Ronnie that showed up in 2006 definitely didn't have the back thickness or fullness that he had in 2003. ;)

Did you see a pic taken of Ronnie backstage at the 2003 Olympia? Dude needed an oxygen tank, so weak is his stamina. What's the point of looking like a comic-book hero if you have the actual physiological strengh of a 90 year-old woman? :-\

ronnie should have retired after his 2005.jay said this on PBW that ronnie should have retired gracefully in 2005 after he won his 8th sandow.jay also said that all the victor martinezs,dexter jacksons and gustavo badells are all improving significantly and ronnie does not stand a chance.jay repeatedly said that ronnie has proved to the world by winning 8 sandows and there is no point to compete more.so what i am saying his ronnie should hang his trunks, age catches up with everyone.jay hung around for that long because jay believed in himself that he can beat him.he came close in 2001 and also in 2005.its ronnie who went down hill and jay did what he had to do to capitalize on ronnies flaws.ronnie he can't play 'the eye of the tiger' at 43yrs old.winning the 9th sandow should be out of ronnie 'racist' mind
