I'm thinking of purchasing a Life Fitness 9500 upright bike from my workplace for 50 bucks. I'd just use it in my apartment 3 or 4 days a week in the morning for cardio. They bikes are in pretty good shape and i can could get it refurbished for under 100 bucks if needed. Would any of you consider that a waste of money for the bike...or do you think that you can do half way decent cardio sessions on it?

whats the benefit of the recumbant -v- the upright?

Bikes are generally not as good as other forms of cardio, because the body's not supporting itself nor are the arms moving, but can work if the intensity is high. If the intensity's not high, biking's a good supplement to more effective forms of cardio. Spinning classes are an example of effective bike cardio-the intenity is very high, HIIT for biking.
Recumbent bike's use even less of the body's resources than regular bikes, are in the "ok" category.

i'd buy a punching bag and some gloves instead, wont wear out and its awesome for the dual purpose of very efficient cardio and works a lot of muscles like abs and shoulders to name a couple.

Yates recommended 20-25 minutes on the bike at 65-75% of your maximum heart rate (220-your age) for three times per week. This was in the off-season. Pre-contest he would add a couple sessions of 45 minutes of power-walking.

that's funny... No, precontest they barely walk, Dexter or Melvin once said they'd be into motorised buggy's if they were available.

training/diet/drugs - in no particular order. being that big needs a hell of a lot of cals just to function.

No, foremost, that would be too catabolic. Secondly, do you think a 260lb bodybuilder can even run let alone wipe his own ass ;) :P
