Title: Message to exercise equiptment manufacturers!
Post by: ToxicAvenger on January 24, 2007, 12:15:00 PM
Who gave yall the bright idea that ALL legcurl machines must have the split angled design..

it reduces ROM and at least in my case ..i lost contact with the muscle...

bring back the ole straight board ones where ya lay completely straight and learned how to keep your ass down.

yes the angled split ones you dont have to learn to keep  your pelvis in contact with the machine but you r cutting the ROM by 1/4...

..every other hamstring day i'm gonna have to not go to the regular golds and instead go to a rec center..thankfully it has one of the old ones..they work MUCH better..

rant over.

Completely agree.  When my old gym switched from the old "flat" bench to the 2 piece angle version, I left for good.

i do stiff legged deads..(the non romanian version)

but i used to do high rep curls followed by forced negatives on em...

on the leg presses i tend to stay in the middle of the platform..

i split my quads and hams..

I designed a split lying leg curl way back in 1982. I thought it targeted the hamstrings better than the Nautilus straight design. Recently my son, who is an exercise physiologist, said the design had to be alterred to more effectively work the hamstrings. His recommendation was to have the body in a raised, straight position with arms extended. I haven't reworked the design to incorporate his suggestions.

Either a machine correctly works a muscle or it does not. The split design makes the exercise easier for beginners but perhaps becomes less effective for advanced users. The test of any machine is how it feels when using maximum resistance.

Sarcasm is right by saying leg curls are shit.  If you use a 45 degree hyper or even better a glute ham raise, along with your deep squats and stiff leg deadlifts you will be much better off.  Leg curls and leg extensions suck.

Its true though.  Leg curls suck and leg extensions are dangerous.  If you do 45 degree hypers right your hams will be fried.

There is an article on the Testosterone website about it.  I used to do leg extensions thinking it would help my knee but I was wrong.

I agree with ya, Tox.

However, I'd rather they (equip comp.) make something that makes women do the splits for reps.........with a facing chair attachment for me to spot them head on..

if you put your knee forward of the fulcrum..its bad..

if you put your kness at the fulcrum..might not be good..

behind the fulcrum and you r fine...

leg ext. are usually considered and open kinetic chain exercise If i remember correctly and definately are not good for the knees...at least if one is rehabbing the knee, just like locking your knees when doing leg presses, there are so many little picky things that are not good when lifting...

The best leg curls are the old style standing ones IMO... the one that ronnie uses in C.O.R... like doing concentration curls for the hammies

I think the split versions are better, used the flat version for years and it wasn't comfortable. If the split's not hitting the leg bis it's because of something else in the design, not the split.

Leg curls don't waste much time, maybe a few good sets. Leg extensions aren't worth the time.

i dont do leg extentions..but a while a 290 lb monster told me to try high rep leg curls (like 50 reps n above with decent heavy weight using rest pause) and guess what..mine started growing...

no shit it's simple kinesiology...

the leg curl is the ONLY pure knee flexion movement there is and should be done by everybody...

A proper glute/ham/gastroc raise involves knee flexion but those benches are rare and people tend to cheat on it...

You haven't worked out in 4yrs and were sick and you did a 100+ reps of squats and 40 reps of leg press and still had energy to do abs? Things that make you go ummmm. Did you dead lift 225 for a 100 reps after that:)
