I just heard on the news that Rush Limbaugh called barrack Obama a "Halfrican American"
1- has anyone seen this story/confirm?
2- what the hell is wrong with rush?
3- will any rush fans here defend the use of this word?
-
I've been watching the news most of the night and haven't heard anything.....but if he did, thats over the top even for him, but if he did, you can bet the media will be one sided as usual!

it's real, video is on MSNBC - http://video.msn.com/v/us/msnbc.htm?f=00&g=2853f78a-3da3-41eb-b28e-ad5b3c8ec151&p=News_Comment%20-%20Analysis&t=c1149&rf=http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036677/&fg=

What would the OTHER side of his statement be? A defense of it?

It's real because Olberman said so? Even it was true, Olberman has it out for him and conservatives anyway........ people like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Faarakan have said things thousand times worse than that, but you don't see the media jumping all over that!
-
Classic! lol
Another example of "excellence in broadcasting"
Too bad he doesn't have some "class" on loan from god

Do you SERIOUSLY think Olbermann would MAKE UP something racist like this? You might not agree with his views- but LIBEL ANOTHER MAN AS A RACIST?
people like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Faarakan have said things thousand times worse than that, but you don't see the media jumping all over that!
Wow. The defense is "others have said worse"?
You're defending an indefensible position by pointing out what SOMEONE ELSE DID?
Are you defending Rush's words?
-
What did Rush say that isn't true?
Obama isn't black. He'll just pretend he is...for votes.
-

Of course he is. He's not white. Sorry, but the "one drop" rule still applies.
Funny, Rush like to go down to the Dominican Rep. with some Viagra, and A lot of Dominicans look like Vic Martinez (black)---so I guess Rush is not racist when it comes to tubby ass getting some pu*** .
-
All this does, is hyping a senator who hasn't even launched a platform yet.
If anything, Limbaugh helps Obama.
If Obama gets elected, he should send a thank you card to Limbaugh for helping building the hype.
But in the words of Chuck D and Flavor Flav: Don't believe the Hype!
Don't buy Obama until he's launched his political platform.

lol. Funny! Seems like I've been the only person in America calling him half black (or half white). I just saw a picture of his mother the other day. She is white as can be. Saw a picture of his father too. He is a straight up African. Sounds like a Halfrican American to me. :D
-
I like how he is only half white and they claim him like his is as dark as midnight. Bullshit. So if he gets elected they better say he is the first mullato president.
-
Since Olberman's ratings are in the crapper why not target the dude with the highest ratings on radio......Olberman's a freaking joke, he's right up there with Baldwin, Striesand and Franken!
-
Wasn't Baldwin supposed to be in Canada like six years ago? We're still waiting
-
I like how he is only half white and they claim him like his is as dark as midnight. Bullshit. So if he gets elected they better say he is the first mullato president.
Who is "they"? Everyone calls him black. Society calls him black. Anyone who looks black (or is known to have black blood) is black in this country. Just look at Tiger Woods. Have you ever seen his mother? Ever see Alicia Keys' mother? I know tons like them.
I was just talking to one of my employees who just returned from Iowa to visit her white in-laws. She's multi-ethnic and looks like she is from India, but with fair skin. People there did a lot of staring (I think in part because she is very pretty). They gave her the "what are you?" look. We talked about how people have to be able to put you in box for their own comfort level (e.g., white, black, liberal, conservative, etc.).
-
If he is half white then he is not black, he is mulatto. I will tell anyone that, just like Halle Berry or any other mulatto. Because he has big lips and a big nose doesn't make him black. He's a mutt.
-

You are in the minority.
This is partly why I think race-based statistics are useless. They do not account for mixed race people.
-

Techinically, youre right, but nobody uses mulatto anymore. You know how many famous black people are mulatto? Frederick Douglass, WEB Dubois, they were all mulattoes. Most of "black" people who were able to go to college in the early 20th century were mulattoes. That is one of the reasons why Howard University had the "paper bag rule", If you were darker than the paperbag you couldn't get in.
But generally Am. society(Anglo) treats mulattoes as black people, but if they can "pass", then it is a different story. Black families are more accepting of mulattoes than they white half of the family, after all black people in americna are mixed and come in varies different shades unlike white people. Latin culture is different and goes by the skin tone

Just look at Tiger Woods.
Woods once told Oprah Winfrey that as a child he had decided he was "Cablinasian" -- a mixture of Caucasian, black, American Indian and Asian. His mother Kutilda is from Thailand, his father is an American of multiple ethnic backgrounds.
http://www.answers.com/topic/tiger-woods
"Cablinasian," "Halfrican" whatever. They're not racist terms, they're attempts to modify the language to indicate the complexity and absurdity of many racial classifications. I'm sure if Rush called Tiger a "Cablinasian" people would go apoplectic.

That's the downside of being the majority. You gotta watch what you say becuase it can easily be taken as racist.
Rush was a fool to say what he said.

Here Intensone.... It's real You can listen to an audioclip here:
http://mediamatters.org/items/200701240010
LIMBAUGH: Hey, Barack Obama has picked up another endorsement: Halfrican American actress Halle Berry. "As a Halfrican American, I am honored to have Ms. Berry's support, as well as the support of other Halfrican Americans," Obama said.
Limbaugh is a fucking Nazi....
End of Story... You listen to a complete POS....
-
They are half black, what's the big deal?

True.
-
They are half black, what's the big deal?
It's not a big deal IMO, but we're talking about how society labels people.
We have an interesting mix in Hawaii. There are a plethora of mixed race people. One group is referred to by many as "hapa" (Hawaiian for "half"). That group of people is limited to part Hawaiian, part white or part Asian, part white people.

I went to his site and listened to his intro...............big deal....That loser Olberman is the only one trying to make a issue out of nothing. Why don't you blast the real racists like Faraakan, Sharpton, Jackson and anyone like them....you don't see the media going after them, stop trying to start shit where there is nothing to start!

Careful- you don't want to be labeled as a "racist" by the Racial McCarthyites on the board. LOL.
-
I'm starting to like Rush after this, after the McNabb comment and others. Funny shit.

;D So I'm searching the news sites for the uproar over this Halfrican American "slur," and there appears to be total silence. Even CNN didn't touch it. But I did find this:
http://www.cafepress.com/saddogshirts/1611499
Looks like people have made Halfrican American t-shirts.
Then there is this:
"1. Halfrican American 8 thumbs up
An American who is of half African descent. ie. if your mother is black and your father is Japanese and you’re from Wyoming you would be Halfrican American."
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Halfrican+American

Nothing? He likely insulted a section of our population. Not very classy and not kosher. He should apologize and explain himself.
Now that we are deflecting (something you do well), faraakan sharpton etc... tehy all should do the same. They are all blow hards along with rush.
This has ZERO to do with Olberman. 100% to do with the cotton head RUsh.
-
People who like and/or listen to Rush will get the humor and not find it insulting. People who already hate Rush will use it as ammunition. Similar to how the Dems let Jesse Jackson speak at their convention after the famous "HymieTown" remark.
No doubt. And you and I can see it as funny or what ever. It doesn;t bother me what he said.
However, we live in a "politically correct " world and it shows a real lack of class for him to say that and it is simething that could piss people off.
-
They are half black, what's the big deal?
Well isn't it bad enough that Rush totally made up and lied about Obama saying it? Next it's using race against him... The old not black enough, not white enough... of course that's despicable, let the man stand on who he is as a person an what his ideas are... That Rush and other have to play with his name and his race to drag the guy down is absolutely disgusting.
-
Well isn't it bad enough that Rush totally made up and lied about Obama saying it?
I think it would be obvious to anyone that Rush was being tongue-in-cheek as opposed to creating a "false report."
-
Nothing? He likely insulted a section of our population. Not very classy and not kosher.
It's not that simple. I wouldn't feel insulted if he'd called someone white trash. And maybe it was tonque in cheek-the political correctness already mentioned gets in the way sometimes now.
-
I think it would be obvious to anyone that Rush was being tongue-in-cheek as opposed to creating a "false report."
ah... no... Rush doesn't do tongue and cheek... ::)
-
He's done this before with McNabb and now Obama.. The guy fucking sucks plain and simple and will argue for anything that's supposed to be on rights' agenda.
-
McNabb is overrated. If he weren't he would have a ring by now with all the hype that surrounded him. Now he's pissed Garcia, a white guy, is getting all his press.
-

Funny, I didn't think McNabb was on the GOP's agenda.
-
Seriously, get the fuck over it. He called him half black, who the hell cares? Seriously, I really think that the black community is not gonna be happy unless Plessy versus Ferguson comes back and the whites get the short end of the stick. I really wish people would get over all this racial crap because it does nobody go. All it does is piss everyone off and make people hate blacks, the major racial instigators, even more. It is in everybody's best interest to stop bring up people's races in elections, biographies and even Super Bowls.

Limbaugh is a fucking Nazi....
This statement is not defensible. Would anyone here risk their own reputation by standing on a mic and telling the world Rush was right to use that term?
I seriously am beginning to think Rush is battling some internal demons lately. Coming clean about "carrying the water", using this slur (which many construe as racist) repeatedly for only his own amusement.
To defend him by saying "others are worse" is weak. Would you say Hitler "wasn't that bad" because he killed 6 million while Stalin killed 26 million?
-
I would and it ain't racist because there is not hatred behind the statement. Nig ger is a racist term because of its derogatory meaning.
-
This statement is not defensible.
I disagree. It's satirical, it has a point and that fact that you don't get it doesn't make Rush, or anyone else, "Hitler."
-
I don't think it would be a big deal at all if Limbaugh would, from time to time, show a sense of self-irony and portion of humor.
Right now, Limbaugh is known for bashing everyone left and right, drug addicts have been a fave target of his in the past.
Then we find out he's an addict himself.
He repeatedly takes shots at Democrats and also wrongly labels them as "Libs", BTW.
It's like no matter what a Democrat says, Limbaugh will blast it.
Someone who doesn't listen and just plays a pre-rehearsed message, the way Limbaugh does, isn't interesting.
There are tons of Republicans, and Democrats, that don't just put on the auto-pilot message the way Limbaugh does.
Limbaugh loses credibility, even among Republicans (I doubt that he's lately been able to swing any voters TO the Republicans, rather AGAINST) and only the truest worshippers are soon going to tune in when he speaks.
The comment isn't that big deal in itself.
What matters is that it comes from Limbaugh. A man who never makes fun of himself, or ridicules right-wingers.
Had Limbaugh frequently made jokes about his fatness, or about his drug addiction, or similar stuff, then my guess is that he would've got away with it.

I think Limbaugh would have little problem with the remark, if not for his history of constantly attacking everyone, never ironizing of his own shortcomings, always being judgemental.
I think it's too bad really, because we need guys like Limbaugh, guys with different opinions. But they need to play it fair, otherwise nobody's gonna take them serious.

O Rly? Maybe you can address this (Pumpster ran away when I posted this on the sports board. :)):
1. McNabb led his team to the playoffs, with lousy WRs, in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 (when he had T.O.), which included four appearances in the NFC Championship game and a Super Bowl appearance.
2. He has thrown for 22,080 yards and 152 TDs v. 72 INTs, ran for 2,726 yards and 24 TDs.
3. He has been named to the Pro Bowl 5 times.
4. Before T.O., he had one of the worst sets of skill position players in the NFL.

No matter who they add to their team and how good their defense is, he can't lead the team to victory. A QB is the leader of the team and he can't lead. He's proven that time and time again. When they lean on him, he crumbles. He was handed the spot light and cannot perform under the conditions that are set and then he blames everyone else. Honestly, TO is a cancer but McNabb should have stopped that shit and kept the offense and the team together. Reid is just as ineffective at that but he can coach pretty well. I've said it before and I say it again, running is McNabb's only real consistent strength and it has been his downfall. He runs, he falls and gets hurt.
-

The numbers say otherwise. I think it is remarkable that he took a lousy offense to the NFC Championship game three times (four if you count the year with T.O., who didn't play in that game). You could say the same about Manning. Never really won a big game till Sunday.
Can you name his starting WRs before T.O.? Pretty bad.
I don't have a problem with the way McNabb handled T.O. T.O. is indeed a cancer.
You are right that McNabb is injury prone. That's the only major criticism I have of him. Aside from the injuries, he throws TDs, runs, runs for TDs, and wins. Cannot ask for much more than that.
-
Going back to the Rush question; he should just say that Obama is not black because his racial heritage doesn't look like he is black american and he doesn't act like one of them so why not describe his ethnic background as something other than the halfrican-american comment. That Obama guy looks like he is just multi racial.

Obama is black and looks black. You obvious don't know or see that many black people. My mother has naturally blonde hair and is very light skinned (called high yella). Black people in American are mixed, unless your straight off the boat from Africa. GET THAT THRU YOUR THICK SKULL. I've seen dudes who have the same facial features like Obama, he could be the dude down the street or at the University. And how does one "act black", is it because he is "articulate" when speaking in public, that he is not "acting black". We all speak differently in public than in private (unless you're Ronnie Coleman)

All I was saying is that I don't feel like it is necessary for people to call that Obama boy a black fella because he doesn't look like a black american since his heritage is supposedly multi-racial. Also Obama doesn't have any characteristics that would be described as black behavior. Also IF you want to technically judge his skin color then you would have to say that it is not close to being black. That probably would not make him dark skin at all so he couldn't be a black guy based on his ethnicity.
-
Of course Rush is racist to some degree (I'm guessing a bit more than the average American), but 15 years ago when he was making sense, I didn't really take issue with it. It's only been the past few years that he's gotten out of hand, in my opinion.
-
"Halfrican American" - WHen rush used that phrase, it was designed to disrespect a person of color. One can argue his degree of intent for racism or disrespect, but the fact remains that he said it to degrade Obama for his skin color. Simple as that.
-
It's not a racist comment IMO. That is apparently the opinion of many "Halfrican Americans" too.

You can look up the "N-word" and you will see a lot of people of color use that term in their websites, blogs, and conversation. Do you consider that word to be okay, because *many*use it?
You cannot *seriously* defend the use of that term because some people who fall under the classification use it to describe themseves, can you?
Also, can you quantify "many"? I see one kid with a blog, one kid with a t-shirt shop, and someone put it in an urban dictionary. DO you consider those 3 sources to be a large percentage of people who fall under that classification?
-

Well, the "N" is obviously racist, so that's (yet another) bad hypothetical.
I am fairly certain I interact with more "Halfrican Americans" than you and the ones I have spoken with about this think it is a riot. There has also been a conspicuous silence by everyone except former ESPN sports commentator Keith Olbermann. The phrase has apparently been around for quite some time (as evidence by the links I posted). Like I said earlier, this is all much ado about nothing.

You live in Hawaii, dude. I lived in Cleveland 2/3 of my life. I'm sure you can feel "fairly certain" about my interactions but I wish you wouldn't make assumptions.
Would you use the phrase on a microphone when addressing the nation, BB?

I live in Hawaii, which has an abundance of multiracial people, probably more so than anyplace else in the country, including Cleveland. Let me just give you a sample of the people I see almost every week at my church: two half black/half Korean brothers (although they are both in college--one in medical school), two half black/half Fijian sisters (although one is in college), two half black/half Palauan siblings (although one is currently in Iraq), two half black/half white boys and two half black/Puerto Rican siblings recently moved to the mainland. We have lots of Asians, whites, and some Hawaiians and Hispanics too. It is a true melting pot. I doubt your day-to-day experience is more diverse than mine. And yes that is an assumption on my part.
If you're asking me whether Rush used bad judgment when making his comment, I say probably, only because he has a bad history. I do a little public speaking (of all ages, including 60 extremely bright fourth graders yesterday morning) and I choose my words carefully. I try and avoid saying anything that might offend people when I have a microphone or a captive audience. There are a ton things I wouldn't say in public, but that doesn't necessarily make those things racist.
