Title: Define a Traitor

Today, two getbiggers called a US senator a traitor.

This word has been dropped before, in which anyone who is anti-war is suddenly labeled anti-troop and anti-US.  But this was the first time here that a public figure (Kerry - a vet, a senator, and very nearly our President) was called this.

What is your definition of the word? 
Mine is that the word traitor should be reserved only for those people who commit major crimes with the intent of bringing down the US.  Terrorists, spies, etc.

Should everyone you label a traitor be punished?
The law says that traitors should be hanged.  Are you prepared to say that everyone you just labeled a traitor should be executed?  Or, are you saying that certain levels of treason shouldn't be punished? 


I think people throw that word out without understanding the implications and I'd like to hear opinions.

I don't think the term is exclusive to legal matters. Ie, I don't think it can only be used in situations with people committing treason on their country, ie real traitors.

It can also be used for a guy like Art Modell, who moves his team from one city to another, things like that. In everyday conversation.

So I don't generally have any problems with the use of traitor regarding John Kerry.

Regarding the specific case, John Kerry, I think there is no grounds whatsoever to even suggest Kerry is a traitor, even using the looser, everyday terminology.

However, no need for an outrage if Kerry is wrongly labelled a traitor, a few questions will sort things like that out. What are those claims based on and how does it make him a traitor.

No biggie IMO.

1. a person who betrays another, a cause, or any trust. 
2. a person who commits treason by betraying his or her country.

Well blame the polish, If they wouldn't have attacked us back in the days well maybe Hitler would have maybe calmed down a bit.... ;)
