Awesome movie and the scene outside the restaurant, where Sly confronts his son was f*cking brilliant, with the dialogue and the delivery being nothing short of great, which is even more amazing given Sly wrote it - no disrespect meant to Sly in anyway.

As I said in my other post to you, don't let anyone get under your skin around here. It's a very sarcastic place, and for that reason, it's normally funny as hell. As for your english, yeah, we can all understand it so don't worry. Your pictures are impressive, and I'm sure many of us can learn from you. Just relax and have a good time, and don't take this place seriously.

I kinda wished his son would've responded with "Look who's talking, you moron. You made millions but you blew it and now you're a sixty year old man working in a restaurant and telling stories to morons."

Why should he say that though? I haven't seen the Rocky series (cringes with embarrassment), but I do know that Rocky loses his fortune and gets 'reduced' to owning that restaurant. But the thing is, Rocky just tells his son to quit whining, pointing the finger and be a man and take charge of his life. Nothing wrong with that at all, especially given he's the father. Now if he'd said, "You're a loser who hasn't made much money", then your argument would hold ground. I think it was fine the way it was.

I was half-way kidding with that last post, but the kid had a point. How exactly was the Rocky character any different than your typical over-the-hill athlete who can't let go of the fame and glory and move on with his life? What DID he have to prove? His story about wanting to keep things small was absurd. He was the two time world champion. If he gets back in the ring in any way, it's gonna be news.

haha, idiot. The movie is about a boxer, not a bodybuilder. ::) ::)

I knew you were kidding in part, but I still don't see what you're getting at. You seem to have missed the point and in fact, have a wrong perspective on the storyline. Rocky never did anything to try to increase his popularity nor hide it when it was recognised. He felt he had 1 fight left in him and given that he wanted to go against a much younger guy in his prime, it is quite commendable. BTW, I personally don't think it was due to some petty reason like wanting to gain popularity.
Plus, he just seemed to want to have a good bond with his son, who was pissed off at life in general cause he was always given recognition only in reference to his very public figure of a dad, whose shadow he could never (seem to) grow out of. In other words, the boy was sick of not being given recognition as a different, unique individual with his own life and identity, which he (erroneously) blamed his dad for and hated him for it. Which is why when he tells Rocky that he was sick of being his shadow, Rocky tells him that such is life in which nothing is given and that you've got to fight for everything and that he (the boy) would need to forge his own path and walk through it, rather than point fingers or blame so and so for his failure(s) in life (at least, up until then).

Great movie! I wish his training sceens were longer. That movie should have replaced part 5. Rocky 5 was brutal.

It was a terrific movie. Less special effects and glamour. More real. Better acting.
Sly looked great for 60, although his face is a little worn. I think it was supposed to be though.

Don't know about ButKus :( I've made it one of my goals to watch all the Rockys in the next month or so. I only know Punchy :-\

This is incorrect. In the movie, he applied for his license to start fighting again, not just for one more fight. The championship opportunity just came up because of the computer game. That's what I meant by him being a typical athlete who couldn't let go.
I agree with you about the son. He needed to stop whining. But, when you watch the entire series, you'll see that Rocky's initial title shot was a fluke. He was working as a collector for a loan shark at the time, when the current champ picks his name out of a fighter phone book.
So, Rocky gets the shot, goes the distance, makes a name for himself, but promptly blows the money, and ends up working in a gym.
He gets another shot, wins the title, has a tremendous run, makes millions, but BLOWS THE FVCKING MONEY AGAIN, and ends up running a small restaurant to make ends meet.
I actually have a copy of the script. In it, Rocky talks about his success being a fluke, and by all rights he should've ended up a bum. They cut that part out of the movie, because they knew it would've made the speech he gave to his son about being a winner seem disingenuous. I've also read the original Rocky script. In it, there's a scene where the Mayor of Philly calls Rocky in for a meeting and points out that Rocky had like 19 arrests for various charges. They cut that out of the original Rocky movie, I guess to make the character seem more sympathetic.
That said, I enjoyed the movie for the reason Chainsaw gave. It was a simple story without over the top special effects and space aliens.

Perhaps I should have saved my 'brilliant' take on the situation until I'd seen the whole series LOL. Thanks for the info. I'll check out the other movies and see if my initial theory still holds water :)
Edit: I need resident expert Danielson's opinion on this - Danny boy, speak on this!

I second this. Excellent film. The no brainers on here won't like it because they don't understand it, but there's no surprise there.

I might just change my mind about you yet.
Nice post!
I loved the movie, as well as the whole series. Half the reason I got into bodybuilding.

Hahahaha don't be so hasty. I used to be dead serious when I started and made nothing but serious posts, but then I discovered the allure of the Dark Side and haven't turned back ever since. I do make the occasional serious post like the one above, but the 'Kiwiol' character is all about flaming, flaming and more flaming 8)

a friend of mine is an actor and he told me a story about Sly. He said he used to bring girls around the sets and have sex in the trailer. One day on the set, he forgot to take his mike off and the whole crew heard him in his trailer with some slut "suck the shaft, suck the shaft" He was very into giving instructions.. true story.
anyone ever see that amature porn movie he did? embarrasing as hell.

hahahaha, are you implying that Sylvester Stallone is hung like a stud hamster in that "movie", nycbull?

hahah, I did notice he was lacking in that dept. the funniest part was him dancing around in a circle with a bunch of naked hippies..hahahah

Rocky Balboa was a brilliant movie. I am not sure why Alex Yebra is calling it new, it came out December 20th. I am assuming he lives overseas. I was disappointed at first that they killed of Adrian, but it kind of worked in the sense that she had a hard time letting him fight Apollo in 1979, I am not so sure it would have been believable that she would let him fight in 2006, nor would he have any reason to. Rocky was a very lonely man in the movie, rehashing his fight stories night after night to his patrons, no one in his life except for his kid who was resentful/embarassed by him. He wanted to fight again for reasons that only he would know for sure, he may have missed the fame, the competition, the training? Who knows. So he gets a fight with Mason Dixon because of the simulation and although cliche, he works things out with little Rocky who decides to embrace who is father is rather than feeling sorry for himself. (I also agree with Kiwi about the scene outside the restaurant, it was Sly's best work since the original Rocky.) Now, as far as the fight, could a 60 year old beat a dominating younger champ? Of course not, but what if the younger guy broke his hand, now with an accident like that combined with Rockys heart, anythings possible ;) I found it to be so much better than I had expected it to be, and a great conclusion to the best film series of all time :)
-
How did this movie do in the theaters money wise. It only lasted a week here. I liked the story but I go see a Rocky movie to see him fight and to see the training part. The sentimental stuff is fine for about 15 minutes or so but more than half (way more) was to sentimental. I hope the Rambo 3 movie doesn't do the same thing

Rocky Balboa made almost 130 million when you add in the overseas money.
It was made for 24 million so it has to be considered a success.
The DVD is scheduled to come out March 20.
