What is the downside of just drinking protein shakes?

low on calories. low on fiber. low on nutrition etc

You will need to take big doses of supplemental Magnesium, Calcium, Potassium, Sulfur, and Phosphorus. You will need Sodium in the form of sea salt too. These are all available in powder form.
If you dont take these bulk minerals, your body will be: weak, inflexible, unable to detoxify, maintain normal pH, unable to produce brain chemicals, and unable to relax (or run the kreb cycle). Plus your immune system would be shot.
I would take Lots of A, B's, C, D, E, and trace minerals too.
Then I would use some for of fiber too (grapefruit pectin powder, pectin powder and psyllium husk powder)
You would need to add fish oil/flax oil to your shakes.

Ketoacidosis
Just to name a few.

its called a supplement for a reason

If your gonna do it, get yourself some powdered egg whites along with you whey...At least by drinking Peggwhites, its the same as eating plain egg whites...Throw some oatmeal in with your egg whites shake and you really don't ever need anything else(short term)
