I am currently bulking and have a question about ab training. Can I train abs, most likely no more than once or twice a week, without it having an impact on my weight gain? I had heard that training abs can somehow shock your core and be a set back for gaining weight. Is this total crap or is there any truth to it? I don't mind losing definition because of the extra weight, I can get it back when I diet down, but I don't want to neglect abs completely and have to make it up later. I want to keep a solid stomach under there.

id say that's total crap. so go on and train your abs.

Great. That's what I like to hear ;D Has anyone heard different?

yea bro its crap. you have to keep your core strong. I've hear people say that they get enough ab work from indirct work (keeping the abs tight during lift) but you should hit 'em dirctly. while bulking, only do some bodyweight movements. if you do weighted crunches and what not. you might get too thick in the midsection.i hit abs once a week and only do crunches and reverse crunches. which really takes about minutes..
but i will say no cardio.. let walking to the kiten to get your next meal be your cardio

Well, since training your abs has very little impact on their definition (unless you're at low single digit bf levels) I'd train them like every other muscle, with a little higher volume.

yup i'd train em, its better than neglecting them, then you have alot more work to do when you diet down. I hit abs about 3 times a week and the workouts are nothing major...I'll do bench crunches into leg ups or something like that.

I just started training abs again and plan on doing it year round. What could it hurt? I've written up 4 seperate routines, 1 movement each for upper and lower abs. I do 2 sets of each movement a workout so it's only 4 sets and doesn't take much time. Abs already look better.
