There Is No Single Group Clearly Responsible For The Crime Of Slavery
Black Africans and Arabs were responsible for enslaving the ancestors of African-Americans. There were 3,000 black slave-owners in the ante-bellum United States. Are reparations to be paid by their descendants too?
Two
There Is No One Group That Benefited Exclusively From Its Fruits
The claim for reparations is premised on the false assumption that only whites have benefited from slavery. If slave labor created wealth for Americans, then obviously it has created wealth for black Americans as well, including the descendants of slaves. The GNP of black America is so large that it makes the African-American community the 10th most prosperous "nation" in the world. American blacks on average enjoy per capita incomes in the range of twenty to fifty times that of blacks living in any of the African nations from which they were kidnapped.

Only A Tiny Minority Of White Americans Ever Owned Slaves, And Others Gave Their Lives To Free Them
Only a tiny minority of Americans ever owned slaves. This is true even for those who lived in the ante-bellum South where only one white in five was a slaveholder. Why should their descendants owe a debt? What about the descendants of the 350,000 Union soldiers who died to free the slaves? They gave their lives. What possible moral principle would ask them to pay (through their descendants) again?

America Today Is A Multi-Ethnic Nation and Most Americans Have No Connection (Direct Or Indirect) To Slavery
The two great waves of American immigration occurred after 1880 and then after 1960. What rationale would require Vietnamese boat people, Russian refuseniks, Iranian refugees, and Armenian victims of the Turkish persecution, Jews, Mexicans Greeks, or Polish, Hungarian, Cambodian and Korean victims of Communism, to pay reparations to American blacks?

The Historical Precedents Used To Justify The Reparations Claim Do Not Apply, And The Claim Itself Is Based On Race Not Injury
The historical precedents generally invoked to justify the reparations claim are payments to Jewish survivors of the Holocaust, Japanese-Americans and African- American victims of racial experiments in Tuskegee, or racial outrages in Rosewood and Oklahoma City. But in each case, the recipients of reparations were the direct victims of the injustice or their immediate families. This would be the only case of reparations to people who were not immediately affected and whose sole qualification to receive reparations would be racial. As has already been pointed out, during the slavery era, many blacks were free men or slave-owners themselves, yet the reparations claimants make no distinction between the roles blacks actually played in the injustice itself. Randall Robinson's book on reparations, The Debt, which is the manifesto of the reparations movement is pointedly sub-titled "What America Owes To Blacks." If this is not racism, what is?

The Reparations Argument Is Based On The Unfounded Claim That All African-American Descendants of Slaves Suffer From The Economic Consequences Of Slavery And Discrimination
No evidence-based attempt has been made to prove that living individuals have been adversely affected by a slave system that was ended over 150 years ago. But there is plenty of evidence the hardships that occurred were hardships that individuals could and did overcome. The black middle-class in America is a prosperous community that is now larger in absolute terms than the black underclass. Does its existence not suggest that economic adversity is the result of failures of individual character rather than the lingering after-effects of racial discrimination and a slave system that ceased to exist well over a century ago? West Indian blacks in America are also descended from slaves but their average incomes are equivalent to the average incomes of whites (and nearly 25% higher than the average incomes of American born blacks). How is it that slavery adversely affected one large group of descendants but not the other? How can government be expected to decide an issue that is so subjective - and yet so critical - to the case?

The Reparations Claim Is One More Attempt To Turn African-Americans Into Victims. It Sends A Damaging Message To The African-American Community.
The renewed sense of grievance -- which is what the claim for reparations will inevitably create -- is neither a constructive nor a helpful message for black leaders to be sending to their communities and to others. To focus the social passions of African-Americans on what some Americans may have done to their ancestors fifty or a hundred and fifty years ago is to burden them with a crippling sense of victim-hood. How are the millions of refugees from tyranny and genocide who are now living in America going to receive these claims, moreover, except as demands for special treatment, an extravagant new handout that is only necessary because some blacks can't seem to locate the ladder of opportunity within reach of others -- many less privileged than themselves?

Reparations To African Americans Have Already Been Paid
Since the passage of the Civil Rights Acts and the advent of the Great Society in 1965, trillions of dollars in transfer payments have been made to African-Americans in the form of welfare benefits and racial preferences (in contracts, job placements and educational admissions) - all under the rationale of redressing historic racial grievances. It is said that reparations are necessary to achieve a healing between African-Americans and other Americans. If trillion dollar restitutions and a wholesale rewriting of American law (in order to accommodate racial preferences) for African-Americans is not enough to achieve a "healing," what will?

What About The Debt Blacks Owe To America?
Slavery existed for thousands of years before the Atlantic slave trade was born, and in all societies. But in the thousand years of its existence, there never was an anti-slavery movement until white Christians - Englishmen and Americans -- created one. If not for the anti-slavery attitudes and military power of white Englishmen and Americans, the slave trade would not have been brought to an end. If not for the sacrifices of white soldiers and a white American president who gave his life to sign the Emancipation Proclamation, blacks in America would still be slaves. If not for the dedication of Americans of all ethnicities and colors to a society based on the principle that all men are created equal, blacks in America would not enjoy the highest standard of living of blacks anywhere in the world, and indeed one of the highest standards of living of any people in the world. They would not enjoy the greatest freedoms and the most thoroughly protected individual rights anywhere. Where is the gratitude of black America and its leaders for those gifts?

The Reparations Claim Is A Separatist Idea That Sets African-Americans Against The Nation That Gave Them Freedom
Blacks were here before the Mayflower. Who is more American than the descendants of African slaves? For the African-American community to isolate itself even further from America is to embark on a course whose implications are troubling. Yet the African-American community has had a long-running flirtation with separatists, nationalists and the political left, who want African-Americans to be no part of America's social contract. African Americans should reject this temptation.
For all America's faults, African-Americans have an enormous stake in their country and its heritage. It is this heritage that is really under attack by the reparations movement. The reparations claim is one more assault on America, conducted by racial separatists and the political left. It is an attack not only on white Americans, but on all Americans -- especially African-Americans.
America's African-American citizens are the richest and most privileged black people alive -- a bounty that is a direct result of the heritage that is under assault. The American idea needs the support of its African-American citizens. But African-Americans also need the support of the American idea. For it is this idea that led to the principles and institutions that have set African-Americans - and all of us -- free.

That is a very lucid well-thought out argument. Very nice.
Boyakasha.

I see it like more of a lot of time spent putting together an argument to address something that isn't even a blip on the radar. :)

I see it as an excuse by white people to justify the enslavement and subsequent mass poverty of a large minority group.
Arguments like they should be grateful that we enslaved them, or welfare is payment for being slaves ignores the truth.
America promised every slave 40 acres and a mule. Then reneged and destroyed all records of who was an actual slave.
How about the people that received reparations and then had the white government steal them, or the fact that white business owners drove black farmers out of business.
Some black people have risen to prominence despite of a society that treats them unfairly.
Also many arguments like this neglect the fact that the worst schools are in the inner city and this only compounds the problem.

I was wondering if anyone was going to take the bait. I'm surprised it took that long.

What issue? No bills pending in Congress that I know of. No think tanks talking about. No political candidate talking about it. I think one of the only places it's an issue is internet message boards. :)
-
So you support mailing them a check out of the pockets of American tax payers? Blacks these days get affirmative action, and I think that's a bunch of crap too. If they can't get help through lowered admission standards and job placements, then how will they get help?
The school thing is a cultural problem. I'm someone that went to an inner city school and it's the crazy urban culture and hip-hop nonsense that ruins it for kids that actually want to learn. Fucking idiots coming in with durags and disrespecting the teachers and hindering the learning of other people. If there's anything to be done about urban schools, then it's kicking out worthless sacks of shit who'd rather collect welfare then get an education.

Exactly. All were outstanding points, and I don't see how anyone in their right mind could argue with them.
To those that try:
Find me a living slave and a living slave owner, and we'll see what we can do about reparations. Until then, don't ask me and the 70% of Americans whose ancestors weren't even here in 1865 to give you our money simply because of the color of your skin.

The American government made money off of slaves and promised reparations.
Pay up.
Whether your family was in the US or not is of little consequence.

Race is irrelevant in this day and age.
It's used to draw focus off things like wars and grand theft billions.
THis thread should have been about the 2.3 trillion missing from the pentagon or Feith's complete set of lies that led us to war. Instead, we're arguing about what one set of dead people owe another set of dead people.

You speak of "the american government" as though it is an unchanging individual person or something. "The American government" today consists of all current taxpayers, all of whom had nothing to do with slavery, and most of whom are not even decendants of those who did. When you say "the American government", what you really mean is "the slaveholding citizens of the US prior to 1865". Guess what? They're all dead! ::)
And when you say "Pay Up" to ME, even recognizing but not caring that neither I nor my family had anything to do with it, I feel an angry, visceral reaction, the same way I would feel about a criminal trying to take my money in a dark alley. THIS kind of crap is what makes people hate blacks and allows racism to continue. You dumb sons of bitches are your own worst enemies in the "race game", and you're too stupid to realize it.

There are many incorporated businesses that are still around and are considered people under the tax laws that would have to pay, plus the American government that collect taxes and levies would have to pay.
The simple fact is that America promised reparations then reneged the deal. The deal was made in good faith by both the former slaves and government. The government still owes compensation.
This happened with many fisrt nations groups in the US some have received compensation while others are still holding out trying to get their land back. A good example of this is the Sioux Indians in the Black Hills. The could have settled their claim, but are instead fighting the government to give back their entire treaty land that was seized.

Joker I don't think this will ever get off the ground. Too remote in time. Too much dilution of the races. I think if people were looking for compensation for Jim Crow, they'd have a stronger (but still very weak) argument.

HaHa, Funny
No because it is a very rich area for both mining and for their heritage.
They want a say in what is happening to their land.
But the white man don't care.

http://www.lakotaarchives.com/lakland2.html (http://www.lakotaarchives.com/lakland2.html)
Following the defeat of the Lakota and their Cheyenne and Arapaho allies in 1876, the United States "purchased" the region from the Lakota. However, no actual purchase was ever completed and the area remains under dispute to this day. In 1980, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the Black Hills were illegally taken and that remuneration of the initial offering price plus interest — over $100 million — be paid. The Lakota refused the settlement, as they wanted the return of their land instead. The Lakota Nation still demands the return of the Black Hills to this day; with the help of former Senator Bill Bradley of New Jersey, a bill was introduced in Congress for the return of a portion of the Black Hills. The bill eventually failed due to lack of support from the South Dakota congressional delegation.
Unlike the rest of the Dakotas, the Black Hills were settled primarily from population centers to the west and south of the region, as miners flocked there from earlier gold boom locations in Colorado and Montana. Today, the South Dakota side of the Black Hills is economically and socially more like Wyoming or Colorado than the Dakotas. The nearby reservations and Ellsworth Air Force Base make for a unique diversity in population unlike the rest of Wyoming or South Dakota.

Only the most ghetto ass lazy black person wants reparations... The rest would rather have it put into a college fund for themselves or their kids so they can actually do something with it besides buy rims.
Next question...

Yes, they are full of lazy ass black people... Well... ok, not exactly... HOWEVER, they want lazy ass black people to believe that they are repressed and need a hand out... because if the black community realized that they were treated shitty JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, then the NAACP wouldn't have a purpose would it?
It would be worthless and a lot of people in the NAACP would be without any power that they currently have.
The NAACP is a scam too... Also, if there was a NAANCP (Non Colored People) don't you think someone would scream racism? I'm not a fan of the NAACP at all as their prime goal is not about equality and fairness... it's about bitching so you can get some money from someone...
Now we can move on.

Maybe this is a stretch, but I'm curious... I believe I've seen you post negatively concerning Quebec's status as a "distinct" society within Canada and you seem unhappy about your tax dollars moving east. How is that scenario all that much different from paying reparations in this case?
In Canada all you will get is drunk and cold and you would be stuck handing out money to Quebec.

I for one dont ask for a fucking thing. I could care less about the government going in to the history books and wasting time on trivial shit like that. 1. Quebecers were never slaves and they are one of the 2 founding nations of Canada.
2. Quebec as a nation or as a province receives far more in economic handouts in the form of transfer payments and political clout then any other province.
3. Quebec should be a recognized as a separate culture as should all other separate cultures including Newfoundland.
4. I never posted about Quebec being a distinct society and I actually supported Charlottetown and Meech Lake.
5. Quebec's nationhood is separate, recognizing this places them on the same level as Native Canadians, whom we signed treaties with. The BNA act recognizes Quebec as one of the founding cultures.
6. You can either believe all provinces are equal or not. I believe they are all equal and that we need less government. Thids would allow both Quebec and Saskatchewan and all other provinces to develop on their own and to grow their own sense of culture and identity.
7. Quebec has its own national assembly, police force, code of law, immigration, health care, child care and others. They have been compensated all along for being distinct.
Comparing slavery to Quebec is weak. The better argument would have been comparing first nation treatment to former slaves.
Canada has been making reparations to the First nation community since about 1982. Which includes a 5 billion dollar payout for residential schooling.
Also you wouldn't recognize the Metis population as being repressed and needing reparations. I do.

I think a lot of people say it publicly... Me and my entire family say it... Unfortunately, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

This is true... They have taken all that Martin Luther King Jr. had done to further a real cause and use their association with him to line their pockets... My grandmother doesn't like these yahoos at all.

I for one dont ask for a fucking thing. I could care less about the government going in to the history books and wasting time on trivial shit like that. They fucked over blacks and we still pay for it today no matter what non blacks who live from the outside lookin in say. Who gives a shit right. Shit is water under the bridge. I dont care about that. But i do care about our fucked up budget, unjust war, and legalized prostution .
Don't forget the pointless war on drugs.

I dont agree with Mr. I's politics, but it's America and I am glad to see him voice his opinion on it.
I still think that for Rush to talk about people and their problems when this guy has done things that he talks about detesting and is so hypocritical that I think if I saw him, I may have to give him the verbal bitch slap for being such a jackass.

What's equally pitiful is that a lot of people identify with the guy and think he's right. ???

Simple... I'm interracial... Reparations are bullshit and no self respecting black person wants it...
Only the most ghetto ass lazy black person wants reparations... The rest would rather have it put into a college fund for themselves or their kids so they can actually do something with it besides buy rims.
Next question...
Combining TrailerPark and Cracker doesn not make you interacial..it makes you SPECIAL ED...why lie about yourself to express a fallacious opinion? I guess you forgot caucasians are the face of poverty, welfare, crime, drug use and sales in america...get off your mothers computer and get a job you lazy redneck and stop trying to pretend you are black....oh I mean Biracial..H ah ah ha ha ha ha ha

You're such a fool... you don't even know me... you know nothing of me, and this statement proves you are missing a chromosome.

I remember the Million Man March back in I guess 1995. It was within walking distance from my neighborhood so I figured I would go check it out. I couldn't believe a lot of what I heard. People spewing hate. Some speakers weren't racist and sounded a positive message to improve black communities. Some others didn't say anything about making things better for poor black communities. They just used it as a pulpit to bash others including their destruction. That I saw as doing nothing constructive and a bit scary. I remember hearing this old black guy who was in front of his house saying that many of these speakers weren't any better than the KKK. Where I work there is a business owned by blacks who do our shop maintenance. I have gotten to know many of the guys. They are positive role models. Most of the guys are ministers and they conduct outreach programs for kids. Teach kids to play instruments, get them to join the church choir. Get them on the church basketball and softball teams. These guys make a big differnce. They touch lives.

I think relatives of all those died fighting for the Union in the Civil War should get reparations from the black community for freeing (some of) their ancestors from slavery.
