Title: The ignorance of many who lift weights.
Post by: Vince B on February 23, 2007, 04:31:02 PM
One day I would like to dump all weights, dumbbells and barbells into the Pacific Ocean so that they can do some good and build up reefs or something.

I swear I am sick of the total ignorance I see on a daily basis from bodybuilders and wannabe trainees. The ignorance is overwhelming. It is so sad to see everyone copying what others are doing and almost no one getting much in the way of results. That is okay because most believe steroids are needed to get really big.

There they are banging away in the free weight room. The clanging of the dumbbells hides the emptiness inside the brains of those people. I see people using ropes for triceps and abdominals. They do bench presses for pecs. Few do full squats. Most make only meager results from all that effort. It clearly is a form of postering that many do but gain little for all that work.

Can it be that whole populations of trainees are uninformed? Well, they are all following some theory or other. Whatever it is those principles are adhered to like a religion. If you try to talk to any of these knuckleheads they remain impenetrable because they totally believe they know what they are doing. Their results suggest otherwise.

I really am ashamed of this sport called bodybuilding. I am ashamed of associating with so many ignorant people with bizarre beliefs and habits. All that work and what for?

This really is a sad pastime. Look at the boobs of female bodybuilders? Does any man actually fancy that bizarre look? Then male bodybuilders end up with tits that rival what the gals have. It makes no difference if you have certificates or not because the ignorance is universal.

One would hope that in this century we could abandon the unprofitable ways of the past. Is this what we find? Nope. There is just as much ignorance today than before. Protein sales are up. Supplement companies make profits. Home gym equipment stores are doing fine. Yet so many believe absolutely untenable things about training. I wonder why the false ideas and theories persist? Why do we still see ab machines advertised on TV to give people abdominals? That is preposterous and downright false.

Is it really that difficult to know something about muscles and how to affect changes in them? My conclusion is that the web of knowledge that is bodybuilding gets transferred from individual to individual and little in the way of critical examination is ever made to check what is being believed. Thus, we perpetuate the same old nonsense and it spreads like a disease. Those who do know something about hypertrophy must wonder if this knuckleheadedness is permanent in our culture.

I so dislike the bigotry that is written by bodybuilders and on line wannabes about fat people. Instead of tolerating and understanding others we often read rather pathetic attacks about others. Every bodybuilder makes a journey from ordinariness and I should hope that no one forgets the transformation. The journey is usually a long and arduous one. Respect of all individuals is what informed bodybuilders should practice.

Thank goodness we have a separate room for free weights at our gym. We just installed a big boxing room. No doubt a lot of those guys will be pounding on those punching bags. The din from that free weight room is actually painful for me to hear. I try to stay out of that room and go there mainly to access our maintenance room. I do some full squats from time to time but a Smith Machine is just as good. I made one with an incline so the movement is similar to free weight squatting. Come to think about it I seldom see bodybuilders squatting and they seldom do full squats. The lack of doing full squats must explain why so many have chicken legs.

Go back to your precious fatties.. I'm sure www.obesecows.com is something more along your lines.

Let's see. The typical putdowns here on Getbig besides small muscles and fatness are homosexuality, old age, and stupidity. Why that is so reveals plenty about a young culture that is mostly uneducated, and is homophobic. I would expect bodybuilders to be informed. Many are and thus they do not inhabit internet forums that are nasty and unprofitable.

The so-called heroes on Getbig are rather pathetic individuals who excel at negativity and putdowns. That is rather empty if you ask me. It is far more difficult to learn things and actually graduate from a known university. There are simply too many pseudo experts here on Getbig. They know very little but their mates are just as ignorant so they shine here with their 'witty putdowns'. I am not impressed.

I salute true wit and intelligence. We do have some blokes here who qualify. The typical Getbigger is no more impressive than hamburger.

The typical bodybuilding trainee spends a lot of time in the gym getting nowhere. When he does have a bit of size he ponders why he is still without a girlfriend.

I am sick and tired of having to look after the women these losers should be dating.

This is a bodybuilding site for goodness sake. How many of you guys aspire to actually win a title? Well, the wanking taking place here surely is no substitute for serious training.

At least I get amused by the wannabe winners of Getbig when I need a good diversion. Now, where is that bona fide expert, Goodrum? He is the epitome of Getbiggers. In one individual resides the collective wisdom and personality of those who lift weights.

First of all, dumbass, it wasn't a personal attack; I was making fun of this post of yours:

Secondly, you're the one who started with personal attacks out of the blue in the "fat people" thread, not the rest of us.

Hope this helps.

Well, as bb'ing is, for the most part, based entirely on superficial appearances, perhaps your conclusions are truisms, Vince. I suppose I was a bit like that when I was younger, insecure I mean, not the lashing out with 'fat/homo/stupid' antagonisms you mention. These days, bb'ing is more of a spiritual/therapy session I take. Perhaps, given time, the great unwashed will come around as well.

I didn't read it but it probably has to do with Goodrum. Maybe a few insults followed by a backhanded complement. That's usually what is written in color.

What a bloody long winded topic. I read about two sentences but I got the gist of it.

Sure, 90% of people don't make noticable improvements from working out with weights. Common knowledge. You can go 6 times a week, but if you don't do what's needed as far as nutrition, rest and work outside the gym, you'll look the same as you did when you started. But gym's aren't gonna tell you that! They'd lose all their customers.

Collectively you guys are a pushover. All that looking at yourselves in mirrors has dulled your minds. A single intelligent person can defeat a whole army of Getbig heroes!

Goatboy has been on Getbig so much he is Meltdown-proof! Now he thinks that is an accomplishment!

In fact, it is a reflection of their own face on their monitors; that is their only friend and company. These little boys are just lonely and all that hate grow from that. It is a pity, because this forum like it is now, is just a kindergarten for fuc*kup teen brats, no brainers and dudes for zero intelligence.

Your point about those ignorant trainees in your gym is just correct, I have seen that too and I share frustration about it. It is quite hard to believe that anybody can be so totally plain stupid, but if you walk to any gym, there is bunch of guys, who make these stupid look like genius compared to this bunch. My theory is that the self-esteem boosted by acceleration of testosterone which start to flow when you start lifting, is the reason for this. First impression which they get when they pick up barbell, is kind of surprise "WHOOPIE...I Can Lift Weights"...and there we go. After few reps they know everything about lifting, and then they start to read those magazines, they copy their training programs from there, thinking like this:"...Ronnie is big mofo, if I train like him, I going to be big mofo"...and there you are. End of story. You have learn all about successful bodybuilding while you drive your stationary bike..

By the time I got to the beach it was a bit overcast. In Sydney there are over 20 beaches to go to. All are better than anything you can find in North America north of LA.   I did take a few photos of Dee Why and Curl Curl beaches.

I ended up in a rose garden and took heaps of amazing photos just after it rained.  Perfect conditions for capturing the saturation and colour of those beautiful flowers.

Do you honestly come to these boards to compare your "wit" and intelligence to those posting here?

Does that feed your ego? Are you so empty that you feel the need to clash with, chastize and "educate" the internet trolling musclehead masses?

If you had a grand intelligence, or bodybuilding record to match you self inflated ego, you would be old, rich, and respected here like those with the names like Arnold, Zane, Columbu, and even Nubret.

But alas...you are a fat old bitter nobody who has some need to clash with those having a good time here....hell, even Lee Priest gets respect here (mostly).

You will never have the respect you so dearly want from these groups, and rightly so. You are a nobody. Stop talking down to anybody here and go back to taking pictures of flowers on beaches. You will not be remembered or missed. (probably the story of your life).

The fact that Vince assumes everyone posting on Getbig is a teenaged musclehead dullard, coupled with his pathological need to constantly point it out to make him feel better about himself, shows he's really not all that intelligent himself.  To those who really are ahead of the pack from an IQ-point and formal education standpoint, he's an amusing headcase at best.

I think it is fairly evident that Vince is playing for the pink team.  He is merely trolling the board for some cock.  He's trying to bait someone into pm's so he can make his  :o moves in private.

Most threads end up as avenues for anonymous people to unload on others. Catharsis for everyone.

I am willing to debate hypertrophy with anyone. However, don't bother if you don't have any original ideas. What I see in the gym is that most guys are not growing. I find it very sad that so many young guys are staying lean and never growing much at all. I guess they are too brainwashed and therefore eat 'healthy', take supplements, and train with 'intensity'. How come they are not growing?

In the old days we read Ironman and Muscle Builder and perhaps Strength and Health. Not much information available in those days. If someone who won contests told us how to grow we would have been grateful. Today just about everyone believes he knows how to train to grow. The results suggest otherwise. I so dislike all the falsehoods believed by so many who lift weights. It is like an epidemic. The sad fact is that most people here on Getbig also believe way too many falsehoods re training and getting big. When people try to wake others up we are labelled lunatics and called names.

I always considered that to be a man one had to stand up for what he believed in. Today I insist that my beliefs should be considered and hopefully be the truth. Most guys here don't have the balls to post under their own names. Is it any wonder that so many shit on others here.

Hey, Fletch, I guess my sense of humour escapes you? That is typical of most discussion boards. I hardly blow any gaskets here and take the crap as well as anyone. I challenge Arnold, Zane and the others to post here. They are my contemporaries. They have done little for bodybuilding or gyms since retiring. I still co-own a gym and actually make much of my own gym equipment.

Sure a lot of the posts here are amusing. Yours are not, Fletch.

Dee Why Beach

Vince,
please tell me which exercise builds chest if it isn't bench press, i'm open to ideas thanks.

also, of course most people at the gym are ignorant compared to you and other serious body builders, just like most people doing the bay run know very little compared to serious marathon runners. most people at night clubs don't really know how to dance either. they are just having a crack, let them be.

btw, why would you go to dee why? the one beach on the northern beaches that is always covered in seaweed  ???
Title: Re: The ignorance of many who lift weights.
Post by: Vince B on February 25, 2007, 05:11:13 PM
Dee Why is easy to find parking at. I merely wanted to take some photos. I have a project going where I am trying to photograph all the beaches in Sydney. I prefer to take images when the beaches are busy with lots of people. I seldom swim at Dee Why. I prefer Freshwater and Bondi as I bodysurf. The best girls are at Bondi and Coogee.

Most guys in gyms get some results and then stop far short of being impressive. They labour on for years looking the same. Seems to me if they knew how to grow they would be much larger. My conclusion is that they do not know how to get any bigger. End of story.

Some people get a good result from bench presses. As Arthur Jones and Ray Mentzer pointed out the bench press doesn't fully work the chest muscles. You can demonstrate that by doing that movement then taking one arm and bring it across your chest. People have believed lots of silly or partially true things about exercises. Eg., lat machine for lats. That movement works almost the whole upper body. Bodybuilders still do way too many exercises and not enough sets with the maximum resistance.

I agree with everything.......exept one thing,

BODYBUILDING IS NOT A SPORT!!

The debate about whether bodybuilding is a sport depends on how you define 'sport'. I don't see the big deal about including bodybuilding as a sport. Some people do and some don't. Some people call motor racing a sport. And so it goes. Depends on who you are talking to and what he biases are.

Reminds me of the origin of the word 'football'. Most people don't know why so many sports are called football. Well, it appears that sports were usually played by gentlemen on horseback. When some played a game on foot they called it 'football'. It had nothing to do with soccer although many believe that is the true football. Here in Australia we have 5 codes called football. Rugby League, Rugby Union, Soccer, Aussie Rules, and Gridiron. The latter is not played professionally here.

Sir Idol, how little you know. Just another Arnold fan, it seems. Arnold is one of the most self-serving people who ever lived. Bodybuilding became more popular after 'Pumping Iron' but he was just a guy in the movie. He did bugger all. He never opened a gym, built or designed any equipment and was a crap judge at the Mr Australia in 1975. Don't attribute to him stuff he did nothing for. He did everything for himself.

He was appointed, for political reasons, to that Council for Physical Fitness. I heard him give a speech at the IHRSA conference in 1991. He thanked them for giving him his latest trophy. What an ass.

Spell out what he has done for bodybuilding except run a show for steroid users each year and does no testing. Seems to me he could do much more. Like, why doesn't he do something about the nonsense of having steroids on the banned list? Why doesn't he support more research into muscles and bodybuilding so that people don't have to take drugs? There is a lot he can do. I am not saying he has done nothing but he could have done heaps more.

If bodybuilding is a sport does that mean bodybuilders are athletes? Some are and most are not. However, I doubt many athletes could follow a bodybuilder through a workout. That goes for powerlifters and weight lifters. Modern bodybuilders do way more cardio than previously and therefore might be considered more fit.

One doesn't have to be an athlete to win Mr Olympia but he has to train his ass off lifting very heavy weights. There has always been a bias against bodybuilders in universities and this argument is part of that bias.

I recall that bodybuilders were called fig-leafers and mirror athletes at UBC in Vancouver. One year I ran a Strongest Man On Campus contest and you had to do a pinch grip to enter then we had curl, bench, dead and squat lifts. After I broke the university record in the deadlift I got some respect from the football heroes who used to laugh at us. They stopped that teasing after that.

One-dimensional; he played a big role but the fitness and health booms were already spreading from California to New York followed by the rest of the country before the movie came out. Athletes were already weight training and looking bigger at the same time.

Self-serving for sure; in person pretty can be obnoxious unless there are cameras or press around. Ask those 15 or more women.

all bodybuilders are self serving.  i cant believe you feel opening a gym in australia with pink upholstery is a more worthy accomplishment than what arnold's done.  yeah he was in movies for himself but it was his work ethic and determination that created his physique, which became the envy of all people when he displayed it in movies.  his motivation isnt the issue, its the result of his actions thats important.

Arnold wanted to be rich and famous. He achieved both way beyond what any of us would have granted was possible. If he cared about bodybuilding he could do heaps more while in his position. What has he done as governor? Well, it seems he is almost distancing himself from his own contest and bodybuilding in general. I doubt lifting the arm of Betty Weider is doing much for bodybuilding. Arnold does most things for his own agenda. He has always been like that. He even wrote that what he does is befriend anyone who can help his career and discard anyone who cannot. arnold isnt responsible for holding the hand of the bodybuilding industry well into his 50s and 60s, hes done quite enough.  he's moved on, as any professional athlete does.  its not his job to tirelessly champion the cause especially after bodybuilding has gone off the deep end with drug use, and the whole foundation of the sport is highly taboo and illegal now.  hes a fuckin governor and he does as much as he can.  name me one other bodybuilder than has done more than arnold for the sport, and i'll tear your argument apart.

At least Keith knows that the other Vince is a nobody. That son-of-a-whatever promised to stop using that name. Now everyone thinks it is Goodrum when they see 'Vince'. Maybe I should challenge Goodrum to a duel using the old code? Whoever loses naturally won't be able to use that name anymore.

Hulllo!!!!!!!!! Ah, keeping in shape is "winning".

You sound kinda negative. You may need to take up a hobby and have more sex or something.

There they are in the weight room clanging the weights and looking at themselves in the mirrors. At least they don't waste any mirrors which helps conservation.

One earnest young man is blasting away, day after day. No results over the past year. I took him aside 3 times and told him the formula. He replied that he isn't doing bodybuilding. They why is he training like a bodybuilder? I can tell from what he is doing that he has no idea whatever about how to get big. He is clueless about nutrition but buys the supplements and eats healthily. Ah, this syndrome is so typical of so many young guys.

Then we have the guys who are darker than average who have a bit of size on their arms. They all forgot to train their legs.

When I train I expect a result and I get one. Now, if only I can get motivated to keep training. Trouble is owning a gym doesn't make one want to do much training. I have to talk to people, do repairs, and prepare new areas. We just added a boxing area. I always swore I would never cater to boxing in my gym but my son convinced me there is a demand for it. Now the members can let off steam punching bags and doing sweat classes.

Look at the fare on this forum. It is not really that funny. At least we have a few stooges to punctuate the days. Goodrum takes the cake. Anyone ever gone to his store to pick up an order?

Update on that young guy blasting away in the gym. Saw him up close and he looks better than I thought. Also he is getting quite strong. So perhaps he is making some gains, afterall. I know he could grow much faster.

I talked to a young guy today and told him he might be able to put 2 inches on his 17 inch arms in 2 months. He is interested. The lad is only 18 and is 6-2. Seems to me he is already doing most of the right things. He might be willing to try my DOMS program for a couple of months and see how he goes. We have plenty to discuss because there is no way I am bothering with anyone who won't follow what I tell him. Should be an interesting experiment.

That little guy who wore the 'Shit Happens!' T-shirt is bald and has a goatee.

Thanks, Pumpster, for 'exposing' or is that revealing who some of these heroes on Getbig are. Makes me smile to see guys who have not paid their dues posting like they do.

I am one of the few guys here who owns a gym that is known. Come on down to say hello. I won't extend an offer to have a free workout because guys I have let train free have come on here to say nasty things. If you have met me personally then you can say what you like. If you have not then that is not playing fair.

The Ugly wrote: "Aren't you a little "advanced" in years to be so obsessed with all this musclehead caca?" Well, why should the young fellows have all the fun? What is this thing about age, anyway? Do you think just because someone is a lot older that he should stop training like he used to? Well, I have found that growth is possible at an age that is 3 times as old as some of the guys here.

I used to post in a more serious vein but then I thought, what the heck, why don't I post as myself but not rely on any achievements from the past. Those titles were won a long time ago. Before many here were even born. I don't expect guys like Arnold and Zane to post here and have a go with the flotsam here. That is fine because most wouldn't survive the taunts, anyway. Some of those guys are way too delicate too play on this board.

Well wouldn't any aspiring BBer practice his posing? Either way it's not like I do it between all my sets but I tend to do it at least a few days a week. Then again I understand why you or most wouldn't pose, you don't have anything worth showing off.

So you have to be an arrogant asshole in the gym and pose if you are an aspiring bodybuilder ::) ::) ::) So do you approve of shadowboxing between sets if you are an aspiring boxer??

It's quite fitting, actually. You get the muscles extremely pumped and see what you look like. Helps make better judgements on what needs to be improved in that musclegroup. Helps prevent possible injury and tears from posing cold in the bathroom.

What is this thing about age, anyway? Do you think just because someone is a lot older that he should stop training like he used to?

No disrespect.

I don't mean training, I'm with you there. The bb game, though. The muscle science overthinking and whatnot ... Just seems less important with age. Big picture, I mean.

The body ages but the self doesn't. You will discover this in due course. Why shouldn't older guys have a go at the internet? There really is no way you can tell age on line unless you know how old someone is or have seen photos of them.

A go? A go is email. Full Tilt Poker. Celebrity Upskirt and the occasional Sinatra Limewire, Vince, this is a go.

Have a go at the grandbabies, Dad!

More speculation from a hate-filled twit with nothing of value to contribute. Get in the gym and take out your issues there kid, you need it. Learn what it takes to work out for real.

This is a fairly recent pic of "Mike".
this is the juve camp white tornado huh ? lmao

Lots of ignorance in the gym,
plenty of ignorance on getbig as well,
To watch some getbigger work out would be a sad sight.

See you have me all wrong, I usually only pose when someone is there helping me with constructive criticism or when there aren't many people in the gym, I workout during the peak time of emptiness around 10am-2pm. Also I go out of my way to not sound arrogant cause I know people can take me posing the wrong way and think I'm an "arrogant asshole" as you so put it. I prefer to pose when I'm alone or with just someone there giving advice or letting me know what I can do to improve my body or poses.

Exactly, I constantly check out my proportion and symmetry while making sure I hit each side of my body equally. I could sit here and tell you which muscles are stronger or better shaped from left to right cause I pay that much attention to my body. I tend to pose more near the end of working each specific body part.

Quote from Arnold's BBing Encyclopedia

"    As important as it is to competitive bodybuilding, it is never too soon to practice posing. You should begin the first day you walk into the gym. Study photos of other bodybuilders, go to contest and watch how the competitors pose, and try to emulate them. Begin by doing your poses in front of a mirror until you think you have a feel for them. Then try doing them without a mirror while a friend watches you.
Between sets, flex the muscles you are training, hit some poses, and study yourself in the mirror. This will condition you to hard, sustained contractions of the muscles and also help you to analyze the current state of your development..."

An IFBB bodybuilder.  (assuming, of course, that the Weider brothers type in purple font.)

The truth is, Goatboy, you and others reveal more about yourself when you target others than you do about the target.

At least your name is amusing. Does anyone know who you are and call you that in person?
