You haven't closed the #2 until you've actually done it.

i've clicked the handles of the number 2 togther for a millisecond so i don't ever say that i've "closed it", i consider closing it to be holding the handles together for at least half a second, having said that not many people in the world have ever closed a number 3.

Did the #1 no probs. Started the #2, no probs until I got about 1/2 cm to closing it and then it stopped. Just couldn't do it; must have been defective. Never tried it again.  :(

by the way even though my grip strength has increased on traditional barbell and dumbbell back exercises i don't think i could come within half an inch on the #2 right now because i haven't been training it.

I closed the #4 not too long ago ( not video taped ).  I started with the Heavy grips and closed up to 350.  I'll tell you this.  WHen I started I closed the 200 with ease 15 times.  Then tried the 250 and only got 2 reps, I couldn't even budge the 300s.  I worked on my grip by pinching weight, wrist curls, bar with string and wieght and closed the 350s after a year.  I then got the captains of CRUSH  I never did a verified test because I do it for myself and not to join some group of hand crunchers.

That #2 is a BIG jump.
I can close the #1 20 times from a one hand grab off a table pretty easily.....the number 2 from a one hand grab....is a hard 1 or 2, and if I'm not serious, I won't even get one.
Place the #2 in your hand with the other hand, and I can get around 3-5.

I don't think I could even get close with the #3, even with a two hand placement.
I've never tried it though

good strength Justin, this goes to show you guys how hard closing these grippers is, Justin deadlifts 635 for 5 and probably close to 700 for 1 and even he can't close a number 3, that thing is brutal.

Yeah, I can't imagine the #4....especially with the one hand pick up rule they have now.
Have you ever seen anyone from the mash monsters board?  There are some grip freaks there.

yes he is strong as a bull but as i sed its a much different type of strength.

like just cos u are very very strong on negatives on bench press for example anbd can do 500lbs controlled does not mean at all u can press 500lbs. does this make sense?

grip strength is awesome lol

yeah, the first guy to ever close it was a guy from Tennessee named Joe Kinney who was maybe 175-180 pounds soaking wet but this dude's grip was INSANE.

There is no man in the world who can close it with the one hand pick up rule.

Those who are certified on the #4, Kinney and Samuelsson, are certified with the old placing rules.

9 reps on the #1 isn't impressive.   I don't think that will translate into being able to close the #2

I use the #1 for warmups (i can rep it til i get bored); I use the #2 for sets of between 5 to 10 reps, and the #3 still feels like a brick. I can't close it using both hands at once.  I don't own a #4 ..

I wouldn't even think of closing the #3 until you can close the #2 as though it were a toy.

Being able to close the #1 is about as impressive as benching 50kg.  Any beginner should be able to do it reasonably quickly.  It's entry level strength, rather than world class

wrong most weight trainers cant close the number 1. however most weight trainers cant bench 275lbs. get my point. its reasonable strong.

also world arm wrestling champ etc cudnt close a number 3. doesnt mean ppl who close number 3 have stronger hands. its all about specifity of training. train for it u will do it. get my point. a few what i would call strong guys in my gym cudnt close it

Or ... the #1 isn't very difficult and is easily mastered?

He shouldn't bother with a 1.5.  Go straight to the #2 and the Supermaster (the best stepping stone between the 2 & 3)

If you are interested in grip strength and feats then join the Gripboard. You have to join up but there are a lot of strong guys there and all they talk about are grip feats.

A reasonably strong person can close the #1 within a month of trying them. The #2 takes a lot longer to master. This is a reasonably good feat for the shaking the hand grip. The #3 used to be for the special elite but we have had several teenagers close it. There are rules that you have to follow to get on the list. Make no mistake, that feat is beyond just about everyone. There have been few who could close it without practice and training. When you try the #3 you will think it impossible for anyone to close. Usually if you can do 10 to 15 reps with a #2 you should be able to close the #3. Ditto for the 1 and 2.

10 to 15 reps sounds about right when moving from the 1 to 2.  but not from the 2 to the 3.  the difference is too much.

10 on a 2.5 and you should be able to close the 3.

If anyone's interested, here are the strength ratings of the ironmind grippers

Guide   @ 60 lb.
Sport   @ 80 lb.
Trainer @ 100 lb.
No.1    @ 140 lb.
No.2    @ 195 lb.
No.3    @ 280 lb.
No.4    @ 365 lb.

It's a big step from 2 to 3

I have to get these freakin' things immediately. My grip is alright but I won't buy anything higher than a #1. I've been doing farmer's walks, which are fun. I walk around with the 85s after an arm workout for 40-50 seconds or so. I want a really strong grip one day.
