SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Some contestants in the largest annual celebration of bodybuilding starting on Friday will likely be on steroids, highlighting how hard it is to keep performance-enhancing drugs out of sport, Arnold Schwarzenegger said of the contest that bears his name.
"The question always is if random testing ... really works 100 percent," Schwarzenegger said in an interview on Thursday. "I believe they can slip through it. I believe that we have athletes on the stage that are taking things."
"Every single year I feel uncomfortable when we have the competition," said Schwarzenegger, the actor-turned-California-governor, who has acknowledged using steroids during his own bodybuilding days.
After becoming the most famous bodybuilder in the sport's history, Schwarzenegger set up the annual Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio, in 1989. He remains the star of the three-day event.
"Just the way some of the athletes look -- it is just an instinctive thing. I've been around the field enough to know there is a certain puffiness and a certain size of the necks and this and that," he told Reuters.
Professional sports including baseball and track and field have struggled to root out steroids in recent years and arrests this week in a suspected steroid ring in Florida, New York and Texas highlighted the issue anew.
"With a cyclist, you just don't know," said Schwarzenegger, 59, who is recovering from a broken leg and using a cane. "In bodybuilding or in lifting, you can see the look of the people, and to me the look today is different than with some of the athletes from the days when I was competing."
FIGHTING FOR YEARS
The Austrian-born Schwarzenegger has spoken out against steroids in recent years.
"I have been fighting this battle for an endless amount of years. As a matter of fact, I was the first one to have actual drug testing at the competition," he said.
The former Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe said he wanted to test competitors an hour before the contest but faced resistance from the International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness.
"They are not willing to do that. They say that there will be lawsuits, that it will be illegal to do that to ask for the urine test," he said

He's a politician, so he wants public support, and the public believes that steroids are bad, so he doesn't wanna go against that.

hahahahahaa, what a fuccking hypocrite, like he never used them. ::)

He admitted to useing them in an extra for 25th anniversary of pumping iron, but said today's pros dont ::)
-
hahahahahaa, what a fuccking hypocrite, like he never used them. ::)
lol, not just used them, but depended on them. he wouldn't be where he is today without them.
-

Exactly!
Charisma and steroids got him where he is today. Take the latter away, and I'm not so sure.
-
Im sure he thanks dbols everyday for making him a millionaire 100 times over.
-
You know there's a reason why the guys who made Pumping Iron decided to make Arnold's "character" "the bad one".
He's very charming, obviously. But Arnold is not, deep down, a nice guy.
-
"I believe that we have athletes on the stage that are taking things."
Really Arnold?? You believe that??

Any one who can do a publicity junket for Jingle All The Way is obviously comfortable bullshitting with a straight face.

this is all meaningless
everyone here should take this energy, especially the californians, and look into arnolds hand in the enron/cali energy crisis ... hes a complete piece of shit
-
He's just trying to stay out of trouble.

I think Arnold is not lying. There was a thread started a while back about the guy who had that 600 pound squat accident.. forgot his name.. he trained with nasser some huge bloated up guy.. and how Joe told him if he goes off the sause he will pull his contract!

its not that hes lying, hes pulling a stunt .. he knows they could never have a urine test 1 hr before the show so hes only asking for it to make himself look like a stud ... he may as well have asked joe to give everyoen in the audience a blow job

arnolds response was perfect, he gave the media just what they wanted to hear and covered his ass at the same time without really having to do anything about it. with this scandal blowing up right now it was inevitable they'd be under the microscope again, but i think with that response the damage was kept to a minimum.
arnold blames ifbb, no one knows what the ifbb is, just some faceless organization, and arnold is in the clear and everyone forgets.
-
he's just saying it for the sake of saying it. in the political scheme of things, it's nice to know he's "against" steroid use, because he's supposed to be.
will he do anything about it? no.
does he give a fuck? no, he's laughing about it.

its not that he saying he never used them- hes hinting at how out of line, and out of control its become- i think you all can agree to that- it is just out of control
-
it would be very interesting to see who was behind the investigation/busts that created this very timely story...

Yes good point. Nowadays supplements almost equal steroids. Just look at guys like Willet and Lacour who are taking more supplements then I ever heard off and they have some good size to them. Lacour turned pro I think.

Well, doing the Colorado Pro probably doesn't take up all of Shawn's time.

Apparently he had time to steal that Adidas tracksuit out of Chick's closet.
-
I guess Chick is correct; reading and comprehension are a weak point of GetBig......
-
Arnold is a master of knowing what to say without really saying anything.
-
Arnold sold bodybuilding out YEARS ago, what's the big fucking deal?
-
He's a politician, so he wants public support, and the public believes that steroids are bad, so he doesn't wanna go against that.
Exactly. That article was meant for Joe Sixpack and his soccer-mom wife, not a bodybuilding audience. I mean come on, Arnold must know how ridiculous he must sound to bodybuilders:
Some contestants in the largest annual celebration of bodybuilding starting on Friday will likely be on steroids, highlighting how hard it is to keep performance-enhancing drugs out of sport, Arnold Schwarzenegger said of the contest that bears his name.

Some? You think, Arnold? ::)
