Title: Your FAVORITE Director!!!!
Post by: Havenbull on March 03, 2007, 07:48:54 PM
This is a tough one for me.

I know James Cameron is big budget hollywood and not the artsy thing to say, but he has never disappointed (The Abyss was his best)

He's recently come out with a new doc that claims to have proof that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and had a child.

Kurosawa, Kubrick, Spielberg, Oliver Stone, Brian De Palma, Terry Gilliam and Hitchcock are up there... then there's a bunch of directors that hasn't done that many movies over the years, but some of the great ones... Jonathan Demme for example, after Silence of the Lambs he wasted time doing rock videos... he should do greater things.

David Fincher is still young, I got great hopes for him  :)

Christopher Nolan, even younger... is an interesting director for sure.

Luc Besson should direct more... instead he waste his time as a producer...he's doing the FOURTH "Taxi" movie...(I've only seen the first one...) why someone who directed The Big Blue and Nikita would waste his talent on that I'll never know...

Ridley Scott has done some great movies over the years... and some not so great ::)

And what ever happened to Michael Cimino ? He did Deer Hunter in 1978... and then nothing good after that, only a half dozen movies in total...  :(

How can there be one?

From the past -

Charlie Chaplin - the Great Dictator
John Huston - Maltese Falcon, African Queen, The Misfits

The present -

Coen Brothers - Fargo, Blood Simple, Big Lebowski, Raising Arizona
Quentin Tarantino - Pulp Fiction, Resevoir Dogs, Jackie Brown
David Cronenberg - Naked Lunch, Crash, Dead Ringers, A History of Violence

I'm surprised you didn't throw Kill Bill in the mix.

Kill Bill(both of them) was better than Jackie Brown imo, but can't hold a candle to Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs.

Only listed the first three off the top of my head.  Loved Kill Bill(s) though.

Lots of people didn't like Jackie Brown... I thought it was brill. Great ensemble cast. Liked the Pam Grier character and the fact that she screwed the bad guys without the typical Sharon Stone schtick.

It's one of those movies that gets better the second and third time you watch it. The dialogue was really great!

There are a lot of directors I like, but my favorite director is without a doubt Mel Gibson. I wish he would quit acting alltogether and concentrate on directing. My favorite movie of all time is THE PASSION OF CHRIST, my second favorite movie is BRAVEHEART, and APOCALYPTO may be in my top 15, definately in my top 20.
