Post by: cl on March 05, 2007, 07:10:48 AM
My son is 13 and is having trouble gaining weight..... he is 5-9 and weighs 143 lbs with clothes and shoes on..... He is doing weight training at the TMCA station training mostly, and we feed him anything and everything and he still cannot gain weight.... Any suggestions?

It really shouldnt matter right now.  He is too young for you to be deciding he needs to 'bulk'.  At least let him finish puberty.

Buy a blender and a very large thermos.  It's easier to drink calories than eat them, just don't over do it.

No worries cl.  Just blend real foods instead of buying overpriced powders.  Bluto's "Blender Thread" has some info on what to drop in.  Just be sure to keep his fat gain under control.

Don't force him into gaining.

He is only forteen, i don't know how many ripped and shredded 14 year old muscle freaks you have seen, but i haven't.

Get him a good diet, whole foods, lean protein, chicken breast, yoghurt, slow carbs like brown rice, whole wheat bread and whole wheat pasta. THis will be enough.

He shouldnt really be traini9ng with weights until hes about 15 - it can close off the pilates and stunt growth. The kids that do weights when they are young are always the ones that excel in lower school sports, then when they get to about 18 and the others overtake them in size and strenght, they fall away into a shivvering wreck !!

Let him try basketball for a year if he's already 5'9.

He loves football and martial arts ... been in martial arts since he was 3. But he starts High school next year and try outs are in Aug of this year. He wants to put weight on but he is getting upset that he can't.
By the way he is not lifting real heavy. most of his set are for 15 reps. We will try the blender suggestion and work from there ... Thanks

try weight gain powder/shakes. he's only 13 too. give him a year or two and his appetite will be like a "human garbage disposal". he'll get bigger and put on the muscle size!  ;) just let his own natural testosterone level kick in!

then why is it a guy can start training at 13 at age 17 be benchin 400 weighin over 200 lean and solid after he's hit his mid 20's he's still growin like a weed. currently a little busy raising a family but its a true story.

Have him drink a high calorie, higher fat protein shake each night before bed.  His metabolism is just too fast to gain weight, he is buring all the calories up each day.  Make sure he is also not skipping breakfast like most young teens do.  With his metabolism at that age, he can afford to eat a slightly higher fat diet than older individuals without getting fat.
