Title: Teeth whitening?
Post by: GroinkTropin on March 13, 2007, 05:38:15 PM
Anybody have any experience doing this? Should it be done by a dentist or can you just buy the kits at a grovery store and do it at home?

I had that Brite Smile thing done at a Dentist's office.  I do not suggest it if you have sensitive teeth.  The "Nurse" didn't get the gel on properly and twice I had to yell for her because of the pain.  When it was done I had sporadic shooting pains in my teeth that would make me hold my head in both hands.  They gave me ibuprofen  ::) before I left the office and then I went home and drank gin.  The shooting pains continued through the next day.

But if your teeth aren't sensitive, you should be fine :)

Now I just use some bleach type gel stuff from the dentist every once in awhile if I feel I need a brightening.  They make a cast of your teeth to make trays that will fit perfectly.  You squirt the gel in the trays and wear them overnight.

But is there a difference in the end result Stella?
Could you say that teeth whitening done with a laser has a better result then doing it yourself with a tray and some whitening gel?

Mix baking soda, hydrogen peroxide into a paste and smear onto teeth, leave for 20 min. Use UV light bulb to speed up the process.

No.  The home stuff is just as good and a lot less expensive.

I've tried the home kits where you have a gel that you put into a mouth tray, then appy to your teeth, and I've also tried the blue light laser. I think the laser gives you the best results, but it is far more expensive. Mine cost $600 for a single application, but was covered by my dental insurance.

Weigh your investment. Is it worth the time, effort or trouble. If so... go for it.

Be careful doing it at home though, a girlfriend of mine just did hers the other day (she'd had it done previously at the dentist but didn't want to pay for it again) and put too much gel in the tray so it got on her gums - her gum was actually white for a brief period afterwards, it hurt like hell & 2 days later its still red & inflamed...  :-\

Normal white teeth look nice, but I think some people have gone way overboard and look very unatural.

Crest White Strips are supposed to work great (I think I read that in Good Housekeepping or something)  :P
