Title: Geting the LEGS to grow......
Post by: Lugar on March 18, 2007, 07:08:44 AM
Thinking of this new leg routine, any thoughts for mass?

Deads 6x6
 Squats 5x5
Lying Leg curl 4x8 not heavy but very slow negatives
Leg press 3x20

Deads don't even have to be part of a leg routine, can take away valuable energy better put in to direct leg work. Do them last if at all.

Leg curl put last unless there's a reasonable rationale for moving them up.

Squat & leg press are the bread & butter & take the most energy, they go first and/or near the top.

I like stiff leg deadlifts for hamstrings.  If you're going to do them start light though, so you get used to the movement.  I've had much better results with these than leg curls of any kind.

If you look at most powerlifters and most powerlifters turned bodybuilders you will notice some very impressive hamstrings.  Genetics aside, I think RDL's are ESSENTIAL to any good leg routine.

I do not agree with the "take away valuable energy" comment.  If deadlifts are so hard and require so much energy and recruit so many different muscle groups, don't you think they will contribute to the overall growth of the body, as well as the legs?  I agree that squats and leg press are great, but I think the benefits of RDL's are to vast to overlook.

I suggest doing
squats
leg press
leg extensions
stiff leg deads
lying leg curls
one leg curls

that what you need for a very basic leg routine.

i personally do walking lunges for hamstings.

You could also do your hamstrings on a different day, grouped with you back.  Stiff-Legged Deads are a great addition to your back routine.  Not to mention, I'd much rather see you doing RDL's on back day than on leg day!

Also, if you're looking for growth, I think you need to at least get some higher-rep sets in on your squats, not just sets of 5.  You'll get no pump from that at all.  Try starting with around 12-15 and work your way up to an all out 5 rep set.

RDL's can fit into a back day for sure, I've done that and it works great
